The Influence of Our Native language on Cognitive Representations of Colour, Spatial Relations and Time

    Get PDF
The current literature review offers a critical evaluation of the extent to which our native language determines the ways in which we conceptualise the external world. Experimental studies regarding colour perception, spatial cognition and spatial representation of events in time are examined. It is argued that the available evidence supports the hypothesis of (a flexible) linguistic relativity, instead of the linguistic determinism hypothesis. Moreover, it is suggested that the impact of language on thought is mediated by three pathways: (i) the intention of an individual to express their thoughts; (ii) the environmental and cultural context; and (iii) the ability of an individual to learn different modes of reasoning

Reflections on an Anti-discriminatory Stance in Psychotherapy

    Get PDF
Challenges and opportunities for psychologists and psychotherapists in respect to explicit and implicit discrimination issues in therapy are explored, both from the side of the therapist and the client. Furthermore, personal reflections on such issues are discussed drawing on examples of indirect discrimination on the basis of race and sexual orientation. It is suggested that a combination of professional anti-discriminatory guidelines, a willingness to understand deeply the client’s frame of reference and self reflection can guard against such phenomena that can harm ethical and constructive psychotherapy

Effects of a Feldenkrais-Based Mobility Program on Function of a Healthy, Elderly Sample

The purpose of this study was to explore whether a program of mobility exercises, based on the Feldenkrais Method, would result in an increase in range of motion and function, as measured by the Functional Reach (FR), modified Functional Reach (modified FR), and Timed Up and Go tests. Twenty-eight healthy elderly volunteers participated in the study. The experimental group participated in the program three times a week for six weeks. Measurements were taken before and after the six week program. The Timed Up and Go test improved significantly (p {dollar}\u3c{dollar}.05) in the experimental group when age was accounted for. Right ankle dorsiflexion also increased significantly (p {dollar}\u3c{dollar}.05). The FR and modified FR measurements did not demonstrate a significant change. As measured by the Timed Up and Go test, a Feldenkrais based program may improve function in healthy elderly individuals. Further research, with healthy and disabled subjects, is needed to understand the benefits of the Feldenkrais Method
