    The Shorth Plot

    The shorth plot is a tool to investigate probability mass concentration. It is a graphical representation of the length of the shorth, the shortest interval covering a certain fraction of the distribution, localized by forcing the intervals considered to contain a given point x. It is easy to compute, avoids bandwidth selection problems and allows scanning for local as well as for global features of the probability distribution. We prove functional central limit theorems for the empirical shorth plot. The good rate of convergence of the empirical shorth plot makes it useful already for moderate sample size.Data analysis;distribution diagnostics;functional central limit theorem;probability mass concentration

    OBDD-Based Representation of Interval Graphs

    A graph G=(V,E)G = (V,E) can be described by the characteristic function of the edge set χE\chi_E which maps a pair of binary encoded nodes to 1 iff the nodes are adjacent. Using \emph{Ordered Binary Decision Diagrams} (OBDDs) to store χE\chi_E can lead to a (hopefully) compact representation. Given the OBDD as an input, symbolic/implicit OBDD-based graph algorithms can solve optimization problems by mainly using functional operations, e.g. quantification or binary synthesis. While the OBDD representation size can not be small in general, it can be provable small for special graph classes and then also lead to fast algorithms. In this paper, we show that the OBDD size of unit interval graphs is O( V /log V )O(\ | V \ | /\log \ | V \ |) and the OBDD size of interval graphs is $O(\ | V \ | \log \ | V \ |)whichbothimproveaknownresultfromNunkesserandWoelfel(2009).Furthermore,wecanshowthatusingourvariableorderandnodelabelingforintervalgraphstheworstcaseOBDDsizeis which both improve a known result from Nunkesser and Woelfel (2009). Furthermore, we can show that using our variable order and node labeling for interval graphs the worst-case OBDD size is \Omega(\ | V \ | \log \ | V \ |).Weusethestructureoftheadjacencymatricestoprovethesebounds.Thismethodmaybeofindependentinterestandcanbeappliedtoothergraphclasses.Wealsodevelopamaximummatchingalgorithmonunitintervalgraphsusing. We use the structure of the adjacency matrices to prove these bounds. This method may be of independent interest and can be applied to other graph classes.     A non-autonomous stochastic discrete time system with uniform disturbances

    The main objective of this article is to present Bayesian optimal control over a class of non-autonomous linear stochastic discrete time systems with disturbances belonging to a family of the one parameter uniform distributions. It is proved that the Bayes control for the Pareto priors is the solution of a linear system of algebraic equations. For the case that this linear system is singular, we apply optimization techniques to gain the Bayesian optimal control. These results are extended to generalized linear stochastic systems of difference equations and provide the Bayesian optimal control for the case where the coefficients of these type of systems are non-square matrices. The paper extends the results of the authors developed for system with disturbances belonging to the exponential family

    Este trabalho apresenta algumas políticas públicas de educação no Brasil que contempla a interdisciplinaridade e a contextualização do conhecimento, com a perspectiva de propor uma articulação entre interdisciplinaridade no ensino de ciências e a pesquisa sociocultural. Inicialmente, são discutidos referenciais teóricos e legislações, problematizando e contextualizando temáticas como complexidade do conhecimento, interdisciplinaridade e abordagem sociocultural. A seguir, apontamos correlações e implicações da perspectiva sociocultural para as pesquisas sobre a interdisciplinaridade no ensino de ciências

    Radio and X-ray properties of submillimeter galaxies in the A2125 field

    We present the radio and X-ray properties of 1.2 mm MAMBO source candidates in a 1600 sq. arcmin field centered on the Abell 2125 galaxy cluster at z=0.247. The brightest, non-synchrotron mm source candidate in the field has a photometric redshift, z = 3.93^+1.11_-0.80, and is not detected in a 31 ks Chandra X-ray exposure. These findings are consistent with this object being an extremely dusty and luminous starburst galaxy at high-redshift, possibly the most luminous yet identified in any blank-field mm survey. The deep 1.4 GHz VLA imaging identifies counterparts for 83% of the 29 mm source candidates identified at >=4-sigma S(1.2mm) = 2.7 - 52.1 mJy, implying that the majority of these objects are likely to lie at z <~ 3.5. The median mm-to-radio wavelength photometric redshift of this radio-detected sample is z~2.2 (first and third quartiles of 1.7 and 3.0), consistent with the median redshift derived from optical spectroscopic surveys of the radio-detected subsample of bright submm galaxies (S(850um) > 5 mJy). Three mm-selected quasars are confirmed to be X-ray luminous in the high resolution Chandra imaging, while another mm source candidate with potential multiple radio counterparts is also detected in the X-ray regime. Both of these radio counterparts are positionally consistent with the mm source candidate. One counterpart is associated with an elliptical galaxy at z = 0.2425, but we believe that a second counterpart associated with a fainter optical source likely gives rise to the mm emission at z~1.Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap

    Long-Term Signs of T Cell and Myeloid Cell Activation After Intestinal Transplantation With Cellular Rejections Contributing to Further Increase of CD16+ Cell Subsets

    The intestine mediates a delicate balance between tolerogenic and inflammatory immune responses. The continuous pathogen encounter might also augment immune cell responses contributing to complications observed upon intestinal transplantation (ITx). We thus hypothesized that ITx patients show persistent signs of immune cell activation affecting both the adaptive and innate immune cell compartment. Information on the impact of intestinal grafts on immune cell composition, however, especially in the long-term is sparse. We here assessed activated and differentiated adaptive and innate immune subsets according to time, previous experience of cellular or antibody-mediated rejections or type of transplant after ITx applying multi-parametric flow cytometry, gene expression, serum cytokine and chemokine profiling. ITx patients showed an increase in CD16 expressing monocytes and myeloid dendritic cells (DCs) compared to healthy controls. This was even detectable in patients who were transplanted more than 10 years ago. Also, conventional CD4+ and CD8+ T cells showed persistent signs of activation counterbalanced by increased activated CCR4+ regulatory T cells. Patients with previous cellular rejections had even higher proportions of CD16+ monocytes and DCs, whereas transplanting higher donor mass with multi-visceral grafts was associated with increased T cell activation.
