AC Loss and Contact Resistance In Copper-Stabilized Nb3Al Rutherford Cables with and without a Stainless Steel Core
Calorimetric measurements of AC loss and hence interstrand contact resistance
(ICR), were measured on three samples of Rutherford cable wound with
Cu-stabilized jelly-roll type unplated Nb3Al strand. One of the cable types was
furnished with a thin core of AISI 316L stainless steel and the other two were
both uncored but insulated in different ways. The cables were subjected to a
room-temperature-applied uniaxial pressure of 12 MPa that was maintained during
the reaction heat treatment (RHT), then vacuum impregnated with CTD 101 epoxy,
and repressurized to 100 MPa during AC-loss measurement. The measurements were
performed at 4.2 K in a sinusoidal field of amplitude 400 mT at frequencies of
1 to 90 mHz (no DC-bias field) that was applied both perpendicular and parallel
to the face of the cable (the face-on, FO, and edge-on, EO, directions,
respectively). For the cored cable the FO-measured effective ICR (FO-ICR), was
5.27 . Those for the uncored cables were less than 0.08
. As shown previously for NbTi- and Nb3Sn-based Rutherford
cables, the FO-ICR can be significantly increased by the insertion of a core,
although in this case it is still below the range recommended for
accelerator-magnet use. Post-measurement dissection of one of the cables showed
that the impregnating resin had permeated between the strands and coated the
core with a thin, insulating layer excepting for some sintered points of
contact. In the uncored cables the strands were coated with resin except for
the points of interstrand contact. It is suggested that in the latter case this
tendency for partial coating leads to a processing-sensitive FO-ICR.Comment: Four pages, with two figure
First-year experience of chemotherapy for advanced retinoblastoma in Tanzania: disease profile, outcomes, and challenges in 2008.
PURPOSE: To examine the profile of retinoblastoma in a national tertiary referral center in Tanzania and to report first-year outcomes of its treatment using chemotherapy. METHODS: All patients with retinoblastoma referred in 2008 were included. Disease was classified on clinical grounds as ocular, orbital, or metastatic. Those with ocular and orbital disease received chemotherapy. Remission was the main outcome measure and defined as absence of disease at the end of treatment. RESULTS: In 2008, 37 patients (20 males and 17 females) with retinoblastoma were referred to Ocean Road Cancer Institute. The mean delay from the first sign of disease to presentation at hospital was 10.4 ± 8.7 months. Disease was ocular in 32% (12 of 37), orbital in 57% (21 of 37), and metastatic in 11% (4 of 37). Of those with ocular disease, 67% (8 of 12) completed chemotherapy and all (8 of 8) achieved remission. In contrast, 48% (10 of 21) with orbital disease completed chemotherapy and only 50% (5 of 10) achieved remission. The difference in outcome between the groups was statistically significant (P = .001, Fisher exact test). CONCLUSION: The profile of retinoblastoma in Tanzania is skewed toward severe invasive disease. Despite the introduction of chemotherapy, further improvements in mortality and morbidity can only be achieved through emphasis on early detection

Nowadays, analysis of complicated problems in the domain of mechanics consti-
tutes a hard and even impossible task without the implementation of numerical
methods and the employment of computational machines. Finite element method
is a powerful tool for the solution of such problems and is rapidly developed in
an academic and professional sense. Even if it was developed and implemented
for structural analysis, it is widely employed in several domains such as in
fluid mechanics, heat transfer, acoustics and electromagnetism. Furthermore, the development of computer hardware in terms of data processing, has significantly contributed to the solution of problems that were considered inaccessible a few years ago.
Most of the materials produced in industry are heterogeneous on one or another
spatial scale. Typical examples include metal alloy systems, porous media and
polycrystalline materials and composites. The overall response of these micro heterogeneous materials depends strongly on the size, shape properties and spatial distribution of the microstructural components. Several techniques have been developed for the prediction of the macroscopic behavior of such materials. The present work is concentrated on the first order
homogenization technique in the framework of a multi-scale approach which consists of the solution of two nested boundary value problems, for the macro-scale and the micro-scale respectively. Methods of this type
- Do not require any constitutive assumption with respect to the overall ma-
terial behavior.
- Enable the incorporation of large deformations and rotations on both micro
and macrolevel.
- Provide the possibility to introduce detailed microstructural information.
- Allow the use of any modelling technique at the microlevel.
Concretely, according to this approach, the macroscopic deformation tensor is
calculated for every integration point of the macrostructure and then is used to
formulate the kinematic boundary conditions for the associated microstructural
representative volume element (RVE). After the solution of the microstructural
boundary value problem, the macroscopic stress tensor is computed by averaging
the resulting microstructural stress field over the volume of the RVE and as a
result, we obtain the stress-strain relation at every macroscopic point.
However, there is a major disadvantage of the existing first-order computational homogenization. More specifically, this technique can account for the volume fraction, distribution and morphology of the micro-components however, it
cannot take into account the absolute size of the microstructure making it thus
impossible to treat microstructural size effects. Nevertheless, computational homogenization provides a significant strategy to
obtain micro-macro structure-property relations for materials for which the overall
macroscopic response cannot be computed by any other method.Κωνσταντινος Ε.
Survival of Hendra Virus in the Environment: Modelling the Effect of Temperature
Hendra virus (HeV), a highly pathogenic zoonotic paramyxovirus recently emerged from bats, is a major concern to the horse industry in Australia. Previous research has shown that higher temperatures led to lower virus survival rates in the laboratory. We develop a model of survival of HeV in the environment as influenced by temperature. We used 20 years of daily temperature at six locations spanning the geographic range of reported HeV incidents to simulate the temporal and spatial impacts of temperature on HeV survival. At any location, simulated virus survival was greater in winter than in summer, and in any month of the year, survival was higher in higher latitudes. At any location, year-to-year variation in virus survival 24 h post-excretion was substantial and was as large as the difference between locations. Survival was higher in microhabitats with lower than ambient temperature, and when environmental exposure was shorter. The within-year pattern of virus survival mirrored the cumulative within-year occurrence of reported HeV cases, although there were no overall differences in survival in HeV case years and non-case years. The model examines the effect of temperature in isolation; actual virus survivability will reflect the effect of additional environmental factor
Challenges to the development of antigen-specific breast cancer vaccines
Continued progress in the development of antigen-specific breast cancer vaccines depends on the identification of appropriate target antigens, the establishment of effective immunization strategies, and the ability to circumvent immune escape mechanisms. Methods such as T cell epitope cloning and serological expression cloning (SEREX) have led to the identification of a number target antigens expressed in breast cancer. Improved immunization strategies, such as using dendritic cells to present tumor-associated antigens to T lymphocytes, have been shown to induce antigen-specific T cell responses in vivo and, in some cases, objective clinical responses. An outcome of successful tumor immunity is the evolution of antigen-loss tumor variants. The development of a polyvalent breast cancer vaccine, directed against a panel of tumor-associated antigens, may counteract this form of immune escape
The Fungal Frontier: A Comparative Analysis of Methods Used in the Study of the Human Gut Mycobiome
This research was conducted with the financial support of Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) under Grant Number SFI/12/RC/2273. PS is funded by a Royal Society-Science Foundation Ireland University Research Fellowship.peer reviewedThe human gut is host to a diverse range of fungal species, collectively referred to as the gut “mycobiome”. The gut mycobiome is emerging as an area of considerable research interest due to the potential roles of these fungi in human health and disease. However, there is no consensus as to what the best or most suitable methodologies available are with respect to characterizing the human gut mycobiome. The aim of this study is to provide a comparative analysis of several previously published mycobiome-specific culture-dependent and -independent methodologies, including choice of culture media, incubation conditions (aerobic versus anaerobic), DNA extraction method, primer set and freezing of fecal samples to assess their relative merits and suitability for gut mycobiome analysis. There was no significant effect of media type or aeration on culture-dependent results. However, freezing was found to have a significant effect on fungal viability, with significantly lower fungal numbers recovered from frozen samples. DNA extraction method had a significant effect on DNA yield and quality. However, freezing and extraction method did not have any impact on either α or β diversity. There was also considerable variation in the ability of different fungal-specific primer sets to generate PCR products for subsequent sequence analysis. Through this investigation two DNA extraction methods and one primer set was identified which facilitated the analysis of the mycobiome for all samples in this study. Ultimately, a diverse range of fungal species were recovered using both approaches, with Candida and Saccharomyces identified as the most common fungal species recovered using culture-dependent and culture-independent methods, respectively. As has been apparent from ecological surveys of the bacterial fraction of the gut microbiota, the use of different methodologies can also impact on our understanding of gut mycobiome composition and therefore requires careful consideration. Future research into the gut mycobiome needs to adopt a common strategy to minimize potentially confounding effects of methodological choice and to facilitate comparative analysis of datasets.Science Foundation Irelan
The transformative potential of reflective diaries for elite English cricketers
The sport of cricket has a history of its players suffering from mental health issues. The psychological study of cricket and, in particular, the attendant demands of participating at an elite level has not previously received rigorous academic attention. This study explored ten elite male cricketers’ experiences of keeping a daily reflective diary for one month during the competitive season. The aim was to assess how valuable qualitative diaries are in this field. Participants were interviewed regarding their appraisal of the methodology as a self‐help tool that could assist coping with performance pressures and wider life challenges. Three outcomes were revealed: first, that diary keeping was an effective opportunity to reflect upon the past and enhance one’s self (both as an individual and a performer); second, that diary keeping acted as a form of release that allowed participants to progress; and third, that diary keeping allowed participants to discover personal patterns of success that increased the likeliness of optimum performance
The role of aerodynamic forces in a mathematical model for suspension bridges
In a fish-bone model for suspension bridges studied by us in a previous paper
we introduce linear aerodynamic forces. We numerically analyze the role of
these forces and we theoretically show that they do not influence the onset of
torsional oscillations. This suggests a new explanation for the origin of
instability in suspension bridges: it is a combined interaction between
structural nonlinearity and aerodynamics and it follows a precise pattern. This
gives an answer to a long-standing question about the origin of torsional
instability in suspension bridges
Effect of insulin on glucose metabolism in the dog after portacaval transposition
The effect of insulin on hepatic glucose metabolism was studied by a multiple-catheter technique in unanesthetized dogs with Eck fistula and with portacaval transposition. With the latter preparation, blood entering and leaving the liver was sampled from peripherally inserted catheters. In the unanesthetized Eck-fistula animals, insulin infusion produced a decrease in the hepatic glucose output. In the dogs with portacaval transposition, a constant infusion of insulin was given alternately by systemic and by intraportal routes. There was no significant difference between the effects of insulin administered by the two routes. During insulin infusion, glucose concentration differences across the liver were reduced, hepatic plasma flow was transiently elevated, and hepatic glucose output was decreased. After discontinuance of insulin, there was a transient rise of hepatic glucose output to above control values. </jats:p
A comparison of the hypoglycemic effect of insulin with systemic venous and portal venous administration
The hyperglycemic effect of insulin by prolonged intraportal and systemic infusion was measured in unanesthetized dogs with a modified portacaval transposition. There was no significant difference in response with the two routes of administration. The relation of these results to research directed to surgical therapy of diabetes is discussed. © 1963 W. B.
