Generalized conductance sum rule in atomic break junctions

When an atomic-size break junction is mechanically stretched, the total conductance of the contact remains approximately constant over a wide range of elongations, although at the same time the transmissions of the individual channels (valence orbitals of the junction atom) undergo strong variations. We propose a microscopic explanation of this phenomenon, based on Coulomb correlation effects between electrons in valence orbitals of the junction atom. The resulting approximate conductance quantization is closely related to the Friedel sum rule.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, appears in Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop ``Size dependent magnetic scattering'', Pecs, Hungary, May 28 - June 1, 200

Conductance oscillations in mesoscopic rings: microscopic versus macroscopic picture

The phase of Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in mesoscopic metal rings in the presence of a magnetic field can be modulated by application of a DC-bias current I_DC. We address the question of how a variation of I_DC and hence of the microscopic phases of the electronic wave functions results in the macroscopic phase of the conductance oscillations. Whereas the first one can be varied continuously the latter has to be quantized for a ring in two-wire configuration by virtue of the Onsager symmetry relations. We observe a correlation between a phase flip by +/- pi and the amplitude of the oscillations.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Conduction Channels of One-Atom Zinc Contacts

We have determined the transmission coefficients of atomic-sized Zn contacts using a new type of breakjunction which contains a whisker as a central bridge. We find that in the last conductance plateau the transport is unexpectedly dominated by a well-transmitting single conduction channel. We explain the experimental findings with the help of a tight-binding model which shows that in an one-atom Zn contact the current proceeds through the 4s and 4p orbitals of the central atom.Comment: revtex4, 5 pages, 5 figure

PHYCOBILISOMES AND ISOLATED PHYCOBILIPROTEINS. EFFECT OF GLUTARDIALDEHYDE AND BENZOQUINONE ON FLUORESCENCE

    Get PDF
The fluorescence of the biliproteins C-phycocyanin from Spirulina platensis, B-phycoerythrin from Porphyridium cruentum and of isolated whole P. cruentum phycobilisomes is quenched in the presence of glutardialdehyde (GA) or benzoquinone (BQ). The kinetics of fluorescence decrease thus induced is biphasic. If GA is used as a quencher, the fluorescence can be recovered at 77 K. Contrary to the GA-effect, only a minor recovery takes place with BQ at 77K, thus demonstrating a different mechanism of action of GA and BQ on biliprotein

On the use of periodic photothermal methods for materials diagnosis

    Get PDF
This work aims the analysis of valuation methods devoted to materials diagnosis in order to provide an efficient estimation in practical operational conditions and environment (by the observation of a thermal tracer representative of a damage). The followed methodology consists in implementing observation techniques based on a periodic photo-thermal excitation so that the observation of the heated structure response allows to identify characteristic parameters of the studied materials. In most cases, simplistic hypotheses required for analytical model validation are not satisfied. Thus, analysis in the frequency domain requires the computing of a specific finite elements method
