Tintin comics came into being at the same time as talking cinema. Early cinema, to which Tintin’s author Hergé was exposed, was not, moreover, as silent as has been claimed; rather, the film lecturer’s presence located it in an oral tradition. The present article notes that the transition to talking cinema was not a mere evolution but was instead a mutation of the film medium. It then attempts to trace the ways in which the bande dessinée (comic strips and graphic novels) may have been influenced by this transformation. From this perspective, the author examines the influence of oral cinema on Hergé’s initial works and analyses the evolution of his work in light of the complexity of the transition to talking cinema. He also demonstrates the extent to which the heritage of oral cinema is apparent in the first Tintin albums produced

Many local authorities lack the necessary knowledge and analytical tools to be able to estimate the effects that planned construction projects will have on tax revenues and on technical and social infrastructure expenditure. This article summarizes fiscal impact analysis theory as well as introducing relevant tools. Finally, it makes recommendations regarding ongoing development of these tools

Watts Cooking: Using a Microwave to Prepare Bacterial Media for Inquiry-Based Experiments

Microbiology provides an excellent opportunity to capture student interest, encourage exploration, and to begin the development of research skills. With a low power microwave, similar to the type found in homes, and a short list of materials easily obtainable and/or found in many biology laboratories, you can begin to open this exciting world to your life science and biology classes. Microwaves are available at very reasonable prices, and can substitute for a much more expensive laboratory autoclave. Your students can choose and design inquiry investigations as well as learn basic laboratory techniques

    Scientists in the Classroom

Being an educator in the twenty-first century is exciting, stimulating, fun, challenging, and dynamic - with a great emphasis on the challenging and dynamic. The scope and depth of the materials we teach, or can teach, to our students is overwhelming and increasing exponentially every year. The list of challenges for science educators is formidable. We have found that one logical piece of the puzzle to help address these challenges is for educators to invite practicing and real-world researchers, engineers, doctors, business owners, and other STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) professionals into the classroom, or take students on field trips to businesses and industries. These scientists in the classroom do not come as mere guest speakers, as an add-on or afterthought, and are not meant to be an interesting diversion from the normal schedule and curriculum. Quite the opposite, the explicit purpose for their presence is to assist and support the teacher, and to present, teach, and discuss discrete, focused, and curriculum-related lessons and topics

A hands-on semester-long course in biotechnology for middle school students, high school students, or college students provides a way to learn about new technologies and can be coupled with assignments that provoke their thinking about the ethical and social ramifications of the field’s advances

Intensity Blending of Computer Image Generation-Based Displays

State-of-the-art combat simulators require a 360 degree field of view, allowing the pilot and radar intercept officer to have the same visibility in the simulator that they would experience in the aircraft. The sky/earth display must be computer - generated and displayed with a minimum of two channels to provide the most realistic display possible. The two channels of display come together in the dome, forming an equator, that must be as indiscernible to the aircrew as possible. To accomplish this, an algorithm has been developed for controlling the video output which makes the two separate channel displays appear as one continuous 360 degree display

HIV-1 Infection of T cells and macrophages are differentially modulated by virion-associated Hck: a nef-dependent phenomenon

The proline repeat motif (PxxP) of Nef is required for interaction with the SH3 domains of macrophage-specific Src kinase Hck. However, the implication of this interaction for viral replication and infectivity in macrophages and T lymphocytes remains unclear. Experiments in HIV-1 infected macrophages confirmed the presence of a Nef:Hck complex which was dependent on the Nef proline repeat motif. The proline repeat motif of Nef also enhanced both HIV-1 infection and replication in macrophages, and was required for incorporation of Hck into viral particles. Unexpectedly, wild-type Hck inhibited infection of macrophages, but Hck was shown to enhance infection of primary T lymphocytes. These results indicate that the interaction between Nef and Hck is important for Nef-dependent modulation of viral infectivity. Hck-dependent enhancement of HIV-1 infection of T cells suggests that Nef-Hck interaction may contribute to the spread of HIV-1 infection from macrophages to T cells by modulating events in the producer cell, virion and target cell
