    Upper Limits on the Extragalactic Background Light from the Gamma-Ray Spectra of Blazars

    The direct measurement of the extragalactic background light (EBL) is difficult at optical to infrared wavelengths because of the strong foreground radiation originating in the Solar System. Very high energy (VHE, E>>100 GeV) gamma rays interact with EBL photons of these wavelengths through pair production. In this work, the available VHE spectra from six blazars are used to place upper limits on the EBL. These blazars have been detected over a range of redshifts and a steepening of the spectral index is observed with increasing source distance. This can be interpreted as absorption by the EBL. In general, knowledge of the intrinsic source spectrum is necessary to determine the density of the intervening EBL. Motivated by the observed spectral steepening with redshift, upper limits on the EBL are derived by assuming that the intrinsic spectra of the six blazars are E1.8\propto E^{-1.8}. Upper limits are then placed on the EBL flux at discrete energies without assuming a specific spectral shape for the EBL.     Synergetic aerosol retrieval from SCIAMACHY and AATSR onboard ENVISAT

    International audienceThe synergetic aerosol retrieval method SYNAER (Holzer-Popp et al., 2002a) has been extended to the use of ENVISAT measurements. It exploits the complementary information of a radiometer and a spectrometer onboard one satellite platform to extract aerosol optical depth (AOD) and speciation (as choice from a representative set of pre-defined mixtures of water-soluble, soot, mineral dust, and sea salt components). SYNAER consists of two retrieval steps. In the first step the radiometer is used to do accurate cloud screening, and subsequently to quantify the aerosol optical depth (AOD) at 550 nm and spectral surface brightness through a dark field technique. In the second step the spectrometer is applied to choose the most plausible aerosol type through a least square fit of the measured spectrum with simulated spectra using the AOD and surface brightness retrieved in the first step. This method was developed and a first case study evaluation against few (15) multi-spectral ground-based AERONET sun photometer observations was conducted with a sensor pair (ATSR-2 and GOME) onboard ERS-2. However, due to instrumental limitations the coverage of SYNAER/ERS-2 and the AERONET network in 1997/98 is very sparse and thus only few coincidences with AERONET were found. Therefore, SYNAER was transferred to similar sensors AATSR and SCIAMACHY onboard ENVISAT. While transferring to the new sensor pair a thorough evaluation of the synergetic methodology and its information content has been conducted, which led to significant improvements in the methodology: an update of the aerosol model, an improved cloud detection, and an enhanced dark field albedo characterization.     Biomass energy is of growing importance as it is widely recognised, both scientifically and politically, that the increase of atmospheric CO2 has led to an enhanced efficiency of the greenhouse effect and, as such, warrants concern for climate change. It is accepted (IPCC 2011 and just recently in the draft version of the IPCC 2013 report) that climate change is partly induced by humans notably by using fossil fuels. For reducing the use of oil or coal, biomass energy is receiving more and more attention as an additional energy source available regionally in large parts of the world. Effective management of renewable energy resources is critical for the European and the global energy supply system. The future contribution of bioenergy to the energy supply strongly depends on its availability, in other words the biomass potential. Biomass potentials are currently mainly assessed on a national to regional or on a global level, with the bulk biomass potential allocated to the whole country. With certain biomass fractions being of low energy density, transport distances and thus their spatial distribution are crucial economic and ecological factors. For other biomass fractions a super-regional or global market is envisaged. Thus spatial information on biomass potentials is vital for the further expansion of bioenergy use. This study, which is an updated version of a study carried out in 2007 in frame of the ENVISOLAR project, analyses the potential use of Earth Observation data as input for biomass models in order to assessment and manage of the biomass energy resources especially biomass potentials of agricultural and forest areas with high spatial resolution (typical 1km x 1km). In addition to a sorrow review of recent developments in data availability and approaches in comparison to its 2007’ version, this study also includes a review on approaches to directly correlate remote sensing data with biomass estimations. An overview of existing biomass models is given covering models using remote sensing data as input as well as models using only meteorological and/or management data as input. It covers the full life cycle from the planning stage to plant management and operations (Figure 1). Several groups of stakeholders were identified

    SWIFT observations of TeV BL Lac objects

    Context: We present the results of a set of observations of nine TeV detected BL Lac objects performed by the XRT and UVOT detectors on board the Swift satellite between March and December 2005. Aims: We are mainly interested in measuring the spectral parameters, and particularly the intrinsic curvature in the X-ray band. Methods: We perform X-ray spectral analysis of observed BL Lac TeV objects using either a log-parabolic or a simple power-law model . Results: We found that many of the objects in our sample do show significant spectral curvature, whereas those having the peak of the spectral energies distribution at energies lower than ~0.1 keV show power law spectra. In these cases, however, the statistics are generally low thus preventing a good estimate of the curvature. Simultaneous UVOT observations are important to verify how X-ray spectra can be extrapolated at lower frequencies and to search for multiple emission components. Conclusions: The results of our analysis are useful for the study of possible signatures of statistical acceleration processes predicting intrinsically curved spectra and for modelling the SED of BL Lacertae objects up to TeV energies where a corresponding curvature is likely to be present.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures.     Solar surface irradiance from new meteorological satellite data

    International audienceThis paper presents the first prototype of a new method, for assessing solar surface irradiance, benefiting from advanced products derived from recent Earth Observation missions. This method -called Heliosat-4- is based on the radiative transfer model libRadtran and will provide direct, diffuse components and spectral distribution of solar surface irradiance every 3 km and ¼ h over Europe and Africa. The advantage of the Heliosat-4 method is the simultaneous computation of direct and diffuse irradiances. The outcomes of this prototype of Heliosat-4 method are compared to ground measurements, of direct and global irradiances, made at 4 stations in Europe and Northern Africa. The results show that standard deviation attained by the Heliosat-4 method for global irradiance is fairly similar to that attained by current methods.
