Investigation on constitutive IKK activity in the axon initial segment
Poster presentation: The transcription factor NF-kappaB plays a central role in the development and maintenance of the central nervous system and its constitutive activation in neurons has been repeatedly reported. Previous work from our laboratories (poster presentation: Compartimentalized NF-kappaB activity in the axon initial segment) had revealed an intriguing clustering of activated IKKalpha/beta and other downstream elements of an activated NF-kappaB cascade (phospho-IkappaBalpha, phospho-p65(Ser536)) in the axon initial segment (AIS). Accumulation of certain voltage-gated sodium channels (Na(v)1.2), M-type potassium channels (KCNQ2) as well as cytoskeletal anchoring proteins (AnkyrinG) characterise the AIS. However, it is not yet clear how AIS-localized IKK gets activated and whether this can be connected to the constitutive activation of NF-kappaB. Long-term blockade of sodium channels with tetrodotoxin, potassium-channels with linopirdine or NMDA-receptors with MK-801 did not elicit any change upon the constitutive activation of the pathway. Strikingly, the occurrence of phosphorylated IkappaBalpha was even unaltered by 24 h of incubation with protein synthesis inhibitors. Others have reported that impairment of NF-kappaB inhibits neuritogenesis. In this line we observed that the early initiation of IkappaBalpha phosphorylation was susceptible to inhibition of IKK in DIV1–2 neurons. We therefore aim to identify the interaction partners of the activated IKK complex in the AIS. Proteomic methods such as co-immunoprecipitation analyses and mass-spectrometry will help us to identify the key players in the initiation of constitutive IKK phosphorylation and activation in neurons
World wide many wine farms are converting into organic or biodynamic viticulture. The main reasons are better wine quality and healthier wine with the long-term aim of sustainability in viticulture.
In 2005 a long-term study started in Geisenheim. The objective of the research program is to investigate, compare and optimise the techniques of integrated, organic and particularly biodynamic wine production in terms of resource protection and food quality.
The goals of this study are to look at the effects on the biological and microbial activity in the soil, the vegetative and generative growth of the vine, microbiology, the grape and wine quality and the sustainability of the three viticultural systems
Efficiency in European Air Traffic Management -- A Fundamental Analysis of Data, Models, and Methods
We systematically study cornerstones that must be solved to define an air
traffic control benchmarking system based on a Data Envelopment Analysis.
Primarily, we examine the appropriate decision-making units, what to consider
and what to avoid when choosing inputs and outputs in the case that several
countries are included, and how we can identify and deal with outliers, like
the Maastricht Service Provider. We argue that Air Navigation Service Providers
would be a good choice of decision units within the European context. Based on
that, we discuss candidates for DEA inputs and outputs and emphasize that
monetary values should be excluded. We, further suggest to use super-efficiency
DEA for eliminating outliers. In this context, we compare different DEA
approaches and find that standard DEA is performing well.Comment: 14 Pages, to be published in JAT
Project Portfolio Management Information Systems’ Positive Influence on Performance – The Importance of Process Maturity.
Companies increasingly support their project portfolio management processes with specific software, and the market for IT solutions is growing. While project portfolio management information systems (PPMIS) promise to improve the quality of the management process and eventually portfolio performance, it is unclear whether they actually deliver on this promise. We lack empirical evidence regarding the actual benefits of PPMIS and knowledge on the conditions under which PPMIS application is most beneficial. Using a sample of 181 project portfolios, this study shows for the first time that PPMIS application is overall positively associated with the quality of portfolio management processes and project portfolio success. However, moderation analyses further reveal that these effects only materialize when formalization of single project management, project portfolio management, and risk management are sufficiently high. Surprisingly, the benefits of PPMIS application do not depend on portfolio complexity (size, project interdependency, dynamics).acceptedVersio
