Two new liverworts for Europe in Macaronesia : Odontoschisma prostratum (Sw.) Trevis. on the Azores and Jungermannia callithrix Lindenb. & Gottsche on the Azores and Madeira
Odontoschisma prostratum (Sw.) Trevis. and Jungermannia callithrix Lindenb. et Gottsche, two liverworts mainly distributed in the Neotropics, are reported at hand of many collections from Macaronesia. O. prostratum occurs on 8 of the 9 Azorean islands, growing on all type of substrates, even epiphyllous, but rarely in bogs. J. callithrix is known from 8 Azorean islands and from Madeira, growing epigeic. The phytogeographical interest of the occurrence on the Azores of some 39 liverworts (among 147) belonging to the neotropical and/or paleotropical elements is discussed. Most of the neotropical species may have been easily transported to the Azores by the frequent depressions (or occasionally storms) moving rapidly at relatively low altitude (3,000 m) from the North or Central American eastern coasts or from the Caribbean islands and Bermuda to Western Europe in a few days. Only a few of these species could have been be introduced by human activities, mainly along the coast
Implementation of NASTRAN on the IBM/370 CMS operating system
The NASA Structural Analysis (NASTRAN) computer program is operational on the IBM 360/370 series computers. While execution of NASTRAN has been described and implemented under the virtual storage operating systems of the IBM 370 models, the IBM 370/168 computer can also operate in a time-sharing mode under the virtual machine operating system using the Conversational Monitor System (CMS) subset. Emotional suppression and well-being in immigrants and majority group members in the Netherlands
We were interested in interethnic differences in emotional suppression. We propose a model in which suppression of specific emotional experiences (suppressive behaviours during interactions with others) mediates the relationship between emotional suppression tendency (intention to suppress emotions) and well-being, operationalised as mood disturbance, life dissatisfaction and depressive and physical symptoms. The sample consisted of 427 majority group members and 344 non-Western and 465 Western immigrants in the Netherlands. Non-Western immigrants scored higher on emotional suppression tendency and lower on well-being than the other groups. We did not find interethnic differences in suppression of specific emotional experiences. The full mediation model was supported in all groups. Interethnic differences in well-being could not be accounted for by differences in emotional suppression
Exploring collaboration patterns among global software development teams.
This study examines communication behaviors in
global software student teams. The authors of the
paper characterize the types of communication
behaviors that occur when student teams are engaged
in a software development project. The authors
present findings from a one-semester study that
examined factors contributing to successful distributed
programming interactions among students enrolled at
the University of Atilim (Turkey), Universidad
Tecnológica de Panamá, University of North Texas,
and Middlesex University (UK). Using content and
cluster analyses techniques, we identified distinct
patterns of collaboration and examined how these
patterns were associated with task, culture, GPA, and
performance of collaborative teams. Our results
suggest that communication patterns among global
software learners may be related to task type, culture
and GPA. It is hoped that these findings will lead to the
development of new strategies for improving
communication among global software teams
Pedagogia da Infância: interlocuções disciplinares na pesquisa em Educação
Este artigo tem como objetivo situar interlocuções disciplinares na busca de caminhos para a
delimitação de uma área específica da pesquisa em Educação no Brasil, a qual se denomina de
Pedagogia da Infância ou da Educação Infantil (Rocha, 1999). Inicialmente e de forma sintética,são recuperados elementos conceituais presentes em publicações e pesquisas para, em
seguida, apresentar uma revisão do percurso e das construções teóricas já realizadas, as quais
afirmam a necessidade de consolidação de um diálogo disciplinar para o estudo da educação
infantil, sobretudo a partir dos estudos sociais da infância. Posteriormente, o artigo apresenta
alguns exercícios de possibilidades dessas interlocuções, em particular, tomando o estudo de
Buss-Simão (2012) acerca das relações sociais no âmbito do contexto educativo para a
pequena infância. Por fim, concluímos com a indicação de perspectivas e demandas de
aprofundamentos relativas aos processos de socialização e à constituição da experiência das
crianças na educação infantil.Abstract
This paper seeks to situate disciplinary dialogues on finding ways for the delineating a specific
area of research in Education in Brazil, otherwise known as Pedagogy of Childhood or
Pedagogy of Early Childhood Education (Rocha, 1999). Initially, conceptual elements present
in publications and research are concisely recovered in order to present a review on the
pathways and theoretical constructs already dealt with, which claim for the need of
consolidating a disciplinary dialogue for the study of early childhood education, especially from
social studies of childhood. Moreover, the paper presents some exercises on the possibilities
of these dialogues, taking in particular the study of Buss-Simão (2012) as a reference, for
dealing with the social relations in educational settings for early infancy. Finally, the study
indicates some perspectives, and warrants the in-depth search for socialization processes and
the establishment of infant experience in early childhood education
Psycho-social factors influencing forest conservation intentions on the agricultural frontier
Remnant forest fragments are critical to conserve biological diversity yet these are lost rapidly in areas under agricultural expansion. Conservation planning and policy require a deeper understanding of the psycho-social factors influencing landholders’ intentions towards conserving forest fragments. We surveyed 89 landholders in an agricultural frontier of the South American Gran Chaco and employed survey data to test three social psychological models: the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and two modified versions of it, one integrated to the Norm Activation Theory (TPB-NAT) and one including the effect of identity (TPB-NAT-Identity). The TPB was the most parsimonious model and explained a large variance of conservation intentions (41%). Social norms and attitudes had the largest direct influence on intentions across the three models, and identity had a significant role in shaping social norms and attitudes. Interventions aimed at building social capital within landholder networks provide the best hope for influencing pro-conservation norms.Fil: Mastrangelo, Matias Enrique. Development of the multidimensional peer victimization scale–revised (MPVS-R) and the multidimensional peer bullying scale (MPVS-RB)
Peer victimization is a frequent occurrence for many adolescents; however, some of the psychometric properties of self-report scales assessing these experiences remain unclear. Furthermore, with an increase in access to technology, electronic aggression should also be considered. The study examined the psychometric properties of the Multidimensional Peer Victimization Scale (MPVS, Mynard & Joseph, 2000), and developed versions to include the assessment of electronic aggression according to whether the adolescent was the target or perpetrator of peer victimization. Three hundred and 71 (191 girls and 180 boys Mage = 13 years 4 months, SDage= 1 year 2 months) adolescents in the UK completed the MPVS including 5 newly developed items assessing electronic aggression, a version of the MPVS designed to assess victimization perpetration, and a measure of self-esteem. Confirmatory factor analyses yielded a five-factor structure comprising: Physical, social manipulation, verbal, attacks on property, and electronic for both scales. Convergent validity was established through negative associations between the victimization scales and self-esteem. Sex differences also emerged. One revised scale and one new scale are subsequently proposed: The Multidimensional Peer Victimization Scale - Revised (MPVS-R) and the Multidimensional Peer Bullying Scale (MPVS-RB)
The early childhood generalized trust belief scale
The study was designed to develop and evaluate the Early Childhood Generalized Trust Belief Scale (ECGTBS) as a method of assessing 5-to-8-year-olds’ generalized trust. Two hundred and eleven (103 male and 108 female) children (mean age 6 years and 2 months at Time 1) completed the ECGTBS twice over a year. A subsample of participants completed the ECGTBS after two weeks to assess the scale’s test-retest reliability. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses confirmed that the ECGTBS assessed the expected three factors: reliability, emotional trust, and honesty with item-pairs loading most strongly on their corresponding factor. However, the ECGTBS demonstrated low to modest internal consistency and test-retest reliability which indicates a need for further development of this instrument. As evidence for the convergent validity of the ECGTBS, the reliability and emotional trust items were associated with the children’s trust in classmates at Time 2. Concurrent asymmetric quadratic relationships indicated the importance of midrange generalized trust. Specifically, children with very high generalized trust experienced greater loneliness and children with very low generalized trust had fewer friendships than children with midrange trust
