    Complex sine-Gordon-2: a new algorithm for multivortex solutions on the plane

    We present a new vorticity-raising transformation for the second integrable complexification of the sine-Gordon equation on the plane. The new transformation is a product of four Schlesinger maps of the Painlev\'{e}-V to itself, and allows a more efficient construction of the nn-vortex solution than the previously reported transformation comprising a product of 2n2n maps.Comment: Part of a talk given at a conference on "Nonlinear Physics.     The Quantum Algebraic Structure of the Twisted XXZ Chain

    We consider the Quantum Inverse Scattering Method with a new R-matrix depending on two parameters qq and tt. We find that the underlying algebraic structure is the two-parameter deformed algebra SUq,t(2)SU_{q,t}(2) enlarged by introducing an element belonging to the centre.     We present the multiloop partition function of open bosonic string theory in the presence of a constant gauge field strength, and discuss its low-energy limit. The result is written in terms of twisted determinants and differentials on higher-genus Riemann surfaces, for which we provide an explicit representation in the Schottky parametrization.     Efficient Hardware Design Of Iterative Stencil Loops

    A large number of algorithms for multidimensional signals processing and scientific computation come in the form of iterative stencil loops (ISLs), whose data dependencies span across multiple iterations. Because of their complex inner structure, automatic hardware acceleration of such algorithms is traditionally considered as a difficult task. In this paper, we introduce an automatic design flow that identifies, in a wide family of bidimensional data processing algorithms, sub-portions that exhibit a kind of parallelism close to that of ISLs; these are mapped onto a space of highly optimized ad-hoc architectures, which is efficiently explored to identify the best implementations with respect to both area and throughput. Experimental results show that the proposed methodology generates circuits whose performance is comparable to that of manually-optimized solutions, and orders of magnitude higher than those generated by commercial HLS tools

    The twisted open string partition function and Yukawa couplings

    We use the operator formalism to derive the bosonic contribution to the twisted open string partition function in toroidal compactifications. This amplitude describes, for instance, the planar interaction between g+1 magnetized or intersecting D-branes. We write the result both in the closed and in the open string channel in terms of Prym differentials on the appropriate Riemann surface. Then we focus on the g=2 case for a 2-torus. By factorizing the twisted partition function in the open string channel we obtain an explicit expression for the 3-twist field correlator, which is the main ingredient in the computation of Yukawa couplings in D-brane phenomenological models.     New twist field couplings from the partition function for multiply wrapped D-branes

    We consider toroidal compactifications of bosonic string theory with particular regard to the phases (cocycles) necessary for a consistent definition of the vertex operators, the boundary states and the T-duality rules. We use these ingredients to compute the planar multi-loop partition function describing the interaction among magnetized or intersecting D-branes, also in presence of open string moduli. It turns out that unitarity in the open string channel crucially depends on the presence of the cocycles. We then focus on the 2-loop case and study the degeneration limit where this partition function is directly related to the tree-level 3-point correlators between twist fields. These correlators represent the main ingredient in the computation of Yukawa couplings and other terms in the effective action for D-brane phenomenological models. By factorizing the 2-loop partition function we are able to compute the 3-point couplings for abelian twist fields on generic non-factorized tori, thus generalizing previous expressions valid for the 2-torus.Comment: 36 pages, 1 figure; v2: typos corrected, proof in the Appendix improve

    Microscopic string analysis of the D0-D8 brane system and dual R-R states

    Using the boundary state formalism, we perform a microscopic string analysis of the interaction between two D-branes and provide a local interpretation for the R-R force in the D0-D8 brane system. To do so, we construct BRST invariant vertex operators for the massless R-R states in the asymmetric picture that are proportional to potentials rather than field strengths. The Hilbert space of such R-R states contains combinations of two vectors that decouple from all physical amplitudes, even in the presence of boundaries. Identifying these vectors, we remove the null states and recover duality relations among R-R potentials. If we specify to the D0-D8 brane system, this mechanism implies that the R-R 1-form state has a non-zero overlap with both the D0-brane and the D8-brane, thus explaining from a local point of view the non-vanishing R-R contribution in the interaction for the D0-D8 brane system and those related to it by duality.Comment: 31 pages, final version to be published in Nucl.     Has VZV epidemiology changed in Italy? Results of a seroprevalence study

    The aim of the study was to evaluate if and how varicella prevalence has changed in Italy. In particular a seroprevalence study was performed, comparing it to similar surveys conducted in pre-immunization era. During 2013–2014, sera obtained from blood samples taken for diagnostic purposes or routine investigations were collected in collaboration with at least one laboratory/center for each region, following the approval of the Ethics Committee. Data were stratified by sex and age. All samples were processed in a national reference laboratory by an immunoassay with high sensitivity and specificity. Statutory notifications, national hospital discharge database and mortality data related to VZV infection were analyzed as well. A total of 3707 sera were collected and tested. In the studied period both incidence and hospitalization rates decreased and about 5 deaths per year have been registered. The seroprevalence decreased in the first year of life in subjects passively protected by their mother, followed by an increase in the following age classes. The overall antibody prevalence was 84%. The comparison with surveys conducted with the same methodology in 1996–1997 and 2003–2004 showed significant differences in age groups 1–19 y. The study confirms that in Italy VZV infection typically occurs in children. The impact of varicella on Italian population is changing. The comparison between studies performed in different periods shows a significant increase of seropositivity in age class 1–4 years, expression of vaccine interventions already adopted in some regions
