An integration of Euler's pentagonal partition
A recurrent formula is presented, for the enumeration of the compositions of
positive integers as sums over multisets of positive integers, that closely
resembles Euler's recurrence based on the pentagonal numbers, but where the
coefficients result from a discrete integration of Euler's coefficients. Both a
bijective proof and one based on generating functions show the equivalence of
the subject recurrences.Comment: 22 pages, 2 figures. The recurrence investigated in this paper is
essentially that proposed in Exercise 5.2.3 of Igor Pak's "Partition
bijections, a survey", Ramanujan J. 12 (2006), but casted in a different form
and, perhaps more interestingly, endowed with a bijective proof which arises
from a construction by induction on maximal part
Adnexal Torsion in Pediatric Age: Does Bolli's Score Work? Report of Two Cases
Adnexal torsion is a surgical emergency requiring early diagnosis in order to avoid demolitive surgery. Adnexal torsion's diagnosis could be very difficult in pediatric patients because children cannot explain symptoms accurately. Furthermore reproductive organs lie high in abdomen, causing unclear examinations findings. For reducing diagnostic mistakes or delay clinical and hematological criteria could be useful. No radiological criteria (CT or MRI) should be taken in count because of the costs and the required time. By combining clinical presentation in patients with OT three useful diagnostic variables have been identified: age, duration of pain, vomiting. Presence of vomiting, short duration of abdominal pain and high CRP levels have great predictive value for the diagnosis of adnexal torsion. In those patients an exploratory laparoscopy should be performed without any doubt and/or delay. These data may aid physicians in the evaluation of abdominal pain in premenarchal girls
Protocol Parameters and their Inter-Relations in X.25. INWG 96.1 Sample Network Architecture
The purpose of this paper is to have a close look at the class of problems that arise in the interconnection of different computer systems through a packet switching network.
The layered protocol's architecture is assumed to separate functionally and to identify the tasks to be performed in the various parts of the network, either in the packet switching subnetwork, or in the end processors. Concepts are then introduced to identify the characteristic parameters of each protocol layer. A further step is carried out by considering a sample architecture built on well-known protocols at different levels, up to the transport level, and developing an analysis of their interaction in order to identify interdependencies and constraint relations on the values of the characteristic parameters
Low efficacy of the combination artesunate plus amodiaquine for uncomplicated falciparum malaria among children under 5 years in Kailahun, Sierra Leone.
OBJECTIVE: In 2004, Sierra Leone adopted artesunate plus amodiaquine as first-line antimalarial treatment. We evaluated the efficacy of this combination in Kailahun, where a previous study had shown 70.2% efficacy of amodiaquine in monotherapy. METHODS: Method and outcome classification of the study complied with WHO guidelines. Children 6-59 months with uncomplicated malaria were followed-up for 28 days. PCR genotyping was used to distinguish recrudescence from reinfection. Reinfections were reclassified as cured. RESULTS: Of 172 children who were referred to the study clinic, 126 satisfied inclusion criteria and were enrolled. No early treatment failures were reported. The day 14, efficacy was 98.2% (95% CI: 93.8-99.8). Of 65 recurrent parasitaemias analysed by PCR, 17 were recrudescences. The PCR-adjusted day 28 efficacy was 84.5% (95% CI: 76.4-90.7). All true failures occurred in the last 8 days of follow-up. Of 110 children who completed the 28-day follow-up, 54 (49.1%) experienced a novel infection. CONCLUSION: The efficacy of this combination was disappointing. The high reinfection rate suggested little prophylactic effect. In Kailahun a more efficacious combination might be necessary in the future. The efficacy of AS + AQ needs to be monitored in Kailahun and in the other regions of Sierra Leone
