    Work-related psychological health and psychological type among lead elders within the Newfrontiers network of churches in the United Kingdom

    Building on a series of recent studies concerned with assessing work-related psychological health and psychological type among various groups of church leaders, this study reports new data provided by 134 Lead Elders within the Newfrontiers network of churches in the United Kingdom who completed the Francis Psychological Type Scales (FPTS) together with the two scales of the Francis Burnout Inventory (FBI) concerned with emotional exhaustion and satisfaction in ministry. Compared with other groups of church leaders, Lead Elders within the Newfrontiers network of churches reported lower levels of emotional exhaustion and higher levels of satisfaction in ministry. Compared with other groups of church leaders, there was a higher proportion of extraverts among Lead Elders within the Newfrontiers network of churches. There was only a weak association between psychological type and burnout

    Development of a Multi-Phase Mission Planning Tool for NASA X-57 Maxwell

    The physical design and operation of electric aircraft like NASA Maxwell X-57 are significantly different than conventionally fueled aircraft. Operational optimization will require close coupling of aerodynamics, propulsion, and power. To address the uncertainty of electric aircraft operation, a system level Mission Planning Tool is developed to simulate all aircraft trajectory phases: taxi, motor run-up, takeoff, climb, cruise, and descent. The Mission Planning Tool captures performance parameters at each point of the trajectory including battery state of charge, the temperatures of components in the electrical system, and propulsion system thrust. This work describes the modeling of each mission phase, and compares the results of simulating a user-specified trajectory, and using a collocated optimal control approach to determine an optimal trajectory. The results show that optimization of the mission show a significant increase in the final battery state of charge over the user- specified simulation strategy. These results will inform the operation of the NASA Maxwell X-57 test flights that will take place this year

    Planet Populations as a Function of Stellar Properties

    Exoplanets around different types of stars provide a window into the diverse environments in which planets form. This chapter describes the observed relations between exoplanet populations and stellar properties and how they connect to planet formation in protoplanetary disks. Giant planets occur more frequently around more metal-rich and more massive stars. These findings support the core accretion theory of planet formation, in which the cores of giant planets form more rapidly in more metal-rich and more massive protoplanetary disks. Smaller planets, those with sizes roughly between Earth and Neptune, exhibit different scaling relations with stellar properties. These planets are found around stars with a wide range of metallicities and occur more frequently around lower mass stars. This indicates that planet formation takes place in a wide range of environments, yet it is not clear why planets form more efficiently around low mass stars. Going forward, exoplanet surveys targeting M dwarfs will characterize the exoplanet population around the lowest mass stars. In combination with ongoing stellar characterization, this will help us understand the formation of planets in a large range of environments.Comment: Accepted for Publication in the Handbook of Exoplanet

    Novel estimation of gear selectivity using a concurrent mass mortality event: A case study using red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) in the northern Gulf of Mexico

    Fishery-independent surveys are commonly used in modern stock assessment models to inform trends in abundance and these surveys may become more important when there are gaps in other data sources, such as harvest data. As a result of the federal harvest moratorium in the late 1980’s, Gulf of Mexico red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) remains a data-limited species with little known about its post-escapement (6 – 46-year-old fish) abundance in offshore waters, which encompasses the spawning biomass of the stock. Historically, age and growth estimates were derived from purse seine collections, which was the industry\u27s preferred harvest technique. Recently, the addition of fishery-independent surveys, i.e. bottom longline surveys, sought to provide a potential alternative to purse seines; however, their efficacy in sampling the breadth of the offshore red drum population has not been widely evaluated. Here, we compared the age composition and selectivity of red drum collected with purse seine and bottom long line in offshore coastal waters of Mississippi and Alabama. Red drum collected in the purse seines ranged from 561 to 1018 mm total length (2–26 years old) and 770 − 1090 mm (2–36 years old) in bottom longlines. Additionally, an opportunistic sampling of red drum from a large fish kill in 2015 was used to estimate selectivity of red drum sampled by purse seine and bottom long line. Red drum selectivity generally decreased with age for the purse seine, while there was an increase in selectivity for the bottom long line survey. This novel approach using a mass mortality event to derive gear selectivity may allow fisheries scientists to refine selectivity measurements in stock assessments. Characterization of selectivity for different survey gears will allow for a more informed comparison of historic and current surveys when gear type effects change

    60°N was +2.0°C, relative to the 1981–2010 average value (Fig. 5.1). This marks a new high for the record. The average annual surface air temperature (SAT) anomaly for 2016 for land stations north of starting in 1900, and is a significant increase over the previous highest value of +1.2°C, which was observed in 2007, 2011, and 2015. Average global annual temperatures also showed record values in 2015 and 2016. Currently, the Arctic is warming at more than twice the rate of lower latitudes
