Developing Advanced Practitioners in Mental Health Social Work : Pedagogical Considerations

    Get PDF
Advanced social work practitioners in mental health services daily face the challenges of working alongside the more powerful professions of psychiatry and psychology. Advanced post-qualifying programmes in mental health social work equip practitioners with the knowledge, skills and expertise to confidently work alongside both psychiatrists and clinical psychologists in multi-disciplinary teams. This includes training in empirical research methods, which are used to develop the evidence base for psychiatry and psychology, although social work practitioners find this particularly challenging. This paper explores the importance of research methods teaching in the development of advanced practitioners in mental health social work. Using learning theory to explore possible reasons why practitioners find it so difficult, it offers some solutions which may enhance the learning and teaching of research methodology to experienced social worker

Parallelized Manipulation of Adherent Living Cells by Magnetic Nanoparticles-Mediated Forces

The remote actuation of cellular processes such as migration or neuronal outgrowth is a challenge for future therapeutic applications in regenerative medicine. Among the different methods that have been proposed, the use of magnetic nanoparticles appears to be promising, since magnetic fields can act at a distance without interactions with the surrounding biological system. To control biological processes at a subcellular spatial resolution, magnetic nanoparticles can be used either to induce biochemical reactions locally or to apply forces on different elements of the cell. Here, we show that cell migration and neurite outgrowth can be directed by the forces produced by a switchable parallelized array of micro-magnetic pillars, following the passive uptake of nanoparticles. Using live cell imaging, we first demonstrate that adherent cell migration can be biased toward magnetic pillars and that cells can be reversibly trapped onto these pillars. Second, using differentiated neuronal cells we were able to induce events of neurite outgrowth in the direction of the pillars without impending cell viability. Our results show that the range of forces applied needs to be adapted precisely to the cellular process under consideration. We propose that cellular actuation is the result of the force on the plasma membrane caused by magnetically filled endo-compartments, which exert a pulling force on the cell periphery

Castanet: a pipeline for rapid analysis of targeted multi-pathogen genomic data

Motivation: Target enrichment strategies generate genomic data from multiple pathogens in a single process, greatly improving sensitivity over metagenomic sequencing and enabling cost-effective, high-throughput surveillance and clinical applications. However, uptake by research and clinical laboratories is constrained by an absence of computational tools that are specifically designed for the analysis of multi-pathogen enrichment sequence data. Here we present an analysis pipeline, Castanet, for use with multi-pathogen enrichment sequencing data. Castanet is designed to work with short-read data produced by existing targeted enrichment strategies, but can be readily deployed on any BAM file generated by another methodology. Also included are an optional graphical interface and installer script. Results: In addition to genome reconstruction, Castanet reports method-specific metrics that enable quantification of capture efficiency, estimation of pathogen load, differentiation of low-level positives from contamination, and assessment of sequencing quality. Castanet can be used as a traditional end-to-end pipeline for consensus generation, but its strength lies in the ability to process a flexible, pre-defined set of pathogens of interest directly from multi-pathogen enrichment experiments. In our tests, Castanet consensus sequences were accurate reconstructions of reference sequences, including in instances where multiple strains of the same pathogen were present. Castanet performs effectively on standard computers and can process the entire output of a 96-sample enrichment sequencing run (50M reads) using a single batch process command, in

O império dos mil anos e a arte do "tempo barroco": a águia bicéfala como emblema da Cristandade

The article reveals that between the mid-17th century and the mid-18th century, in the ecclesiastical world of the religious orders (Jesuits, franciscans, Carmelites, Cistercians, Augustinian, etc.) and the episcopate, there was the progressive adoption of the imperial symbol, the double-headed eagle, attribute of the Christian Empire, the germanic Holy Roman Empire emblem. However, in the religious field, this imperial eagle of the baroque time appears without the political insignia (sword, scepter and the imperial orb), adorning altars, monstrances, trumphal archs, facades of temples, doors, walls, domes, pulpits, sacred washbasins, sculptures and paintings of the Virgin and Child, liturgical robes, etc.; therefore related to the cult and the dogmas of the Catholic faith - in artistic works, the association between the double eagle and the flesh-spirit or human-divine unity, axial principle of the Catholic faith, represented by Virgin-Mother and Christ, is often indicated directly. The research has located and identified numerous remnants of the double eagle emblem in religious field in Portugal and Spain and in their conquests and dominions in America, Asia and Africa, and also in Italy, and the historiography on painful birth of the modern era in the West has never realized this phenomenon. Symbolizing absolute power, universal power, these works with sacred significance, as the ecclesiastical discourse of the time, demonstrate movement occurred in religious plane. With the aim to assert not only spiritual but also temporal power of Christ and his mystical body, the Church was impelled by the idea of restoring the "Republica Christiana" or Christendon - disrupted by conflicts of power and faith - and of introducing a Universal Apostolic Monarchy extended to all mankind: the Empire of the Last Days, the Empire of Christ in the world, the fifth Empire
