A Katznelson-Tzafriri theorem for measures
This article generalises the well-known Katznelson-Tzafriri theorem for a
-semigroup on a Banach space , by removing the assumption that a
certain measure in the original result be absolutely continuous. In an
important special case the rate of decay is quantified in terms of the growth
of the resolvent of the generator of . These results are closely related to
ones obtained recently in the Hilbert space setting by Batty, Chill and Tomilov
in [6]. The main new idea is to incorporate an assumption on the non-analytic
growth bound which is equivalent to the assumption made in [6] if
is a Hilbert space.Comment: 17 pages, to appear in Journal of Integral Equations and Operator

A quantitative version of Gordon's Theorem for Jacobi and Sturm-Liouville operators
We prove a quantitative version of Gordon's Theorem concerning absence of
eigenvalues for Jacobi matrices and Sturm-Liouville operators with complex
coefficients.Comment: 22 page
Stochastic thermodynamics of single enzymes and molecular motors
For a single enzyme or molecular motor operating in an aqueous solution of
non-equilibrated solute concentrations, a thermodynamic description is
developed on the level of an individual trajectory of transitions between
states. The concept of internal energy, intrinsic entropy and free energy for
states follows from a microscopic description using one assumption on
time-scale separation. A first law energy balance then allows the unique
identification of the heat dissipated in one transition. Consistency with the
second law on the ensemble level enforces both stochastic entropy as third
contribution to the entropy change involved in one transition and the local
detailed balance condition for the ratio between forward and backward rates for
any transition. These results follow without assuming weak coupling between the
enzyme and the solutes, ideal solution behavior or mass action law kinetics.
The present approach highlights both the crucial role of the intrinsic entropy
of each state and the physically questionable role of chemiostats for deriving
the first law for molecular motors subject to an external force under realistic
conditions.Comment: 11 page
The Characteristics of Cultural Tourists who Visit Urban Jewish Heritage Centres: The Case Study of Visitors to the White Stork Synagogue in Wrocław
Since the White Stork Synagogue in Wrocław has been restored, opened to visitors and become a part of the so-called District of the Four Faiths promoted by the city council, both the synagogue and its neighbourhood have become tourist attractions which support Wrocław’s image as a multicultural city. Therefore, the aim of the article is to identify the characteristics of tourists visiting the synagogue which could help understand the specific features of those attracted by urban Jewish heritage. As a result of research with the use of surveys, interviews and observation, the highly emotive cognitive approach of tourists has been determined as the dominant feature in this niche market. Moreover, its strongly international character and its specific age and education structure have been pinpointed. These features form the basis for the conclusion that the tourists attracted by urban Jewish heritage form a very specific niche market which can be targeted especially by large cities through the development of themed tourist products
A monopole solution in a Lorentz-violating field theory
I present a topological defect solution that arises in a theory where Lorentz
symmetry is spontaneously broken by a rank-two antisymmetric tensor field, and
I discuss its observational signatures.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
Flexibility through working time accounts : reconciling economic efficiency and individual time requirements
This paper discusses the tension between the demands of economic efficiency, on the one hand, and non-economic ends (leisure, family, etc.) on the other. It starts by outlining the formative characteristics of flexible forms of working time to then investigate the regulatory structures of working time accounts (Part 3). The argument of relative predominance of economic aspects against private time needs is then examined further. Possible conflicts between goals and uses of the flexible organisation of time are then discussed. --
Lorentz violation and topological defects
If Lorentz symmetry is broken, it must have occurred dynamically, via a
vector or tensor field whose potential energy forces it to take on a non-zero
background expectation value "in vacuum". If the set of minima of this
potential (the vacuum manifold) has a non-trivial topology, then there can
arise topological defects: stable solutions in which the field approaches
different potential minima as we go to infinity in different directions. I
discuss the current status of research into these topological defects in the
context of Lorentz symmetry breaking, including recent results concerning the
birefringent light-bending of monopole solutions, and the search for models
supporting cosmic-string and domain-wall defects.Comment: 4 pages. Presented at the Sixth Meeting on CPT and Lorentz Symmetry,
