Educational analysis of language learning by computer-assisted using the web. The Appraisalweb project
This study suggests a global methodology for the pedagogical analysis of
Webbased
Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL). To illustrate such
proposal, a Research & Development project called APPRAISALWeb and carried out
by researchers at the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia is presented. Its objective
is to develop a platform for the collection and pedagogical analysis of data from
Webbased
CALL courses and resources and make it available on the Web for the
whole society. Firstly, the APPRAISALWeb Project is presented in context, including
its research significance and objectives. Then, the two features on which the project
is based are discussed, i.e., on the one hand, the suggestion of a theoretical model
for the pedagogical analysis of CALL, and, on the other hand, the development of a
computer tool available through the Web to carry out such analysis in practice.
Next, some insights from research on Learning Objects Metadata Theory which can
be of use in the analysis are incorporated. Finally, conclusions are drawn about the
feasibility of the project and the proposed methodology, and some suggestions are
made for future research work within the project
An IFRS 2 and FASB 123 (R) Compatible Model for the Valuation of Employee Stock Options
In this paper, we show how employee stock options can be valued under the new reporting standards IFRS 2 and FASB 123 (revised) for share-based payments. Both standards require companies to expense employee stock options at fair value. We propose a new valuation model, referred to as Enhanced American model, that complies with the new standards and produces fair values often lower than those generated by traditional models such as the Black-Scholes model or the adjusted Black-Scholes model. We also provide a sensitivity analysis of model input parameters and analyze the impact of the parameters on the fair value of the option. The valuation of employee stock options requires an accurate estimation of the exercise behavior. We show how the exercise behavior can be modeled in a binomial tree and demonstrate the relevance of the input parameters in the calibration of the model to an estimated expected life of the optio

Effect of rigid body motion in phase-field models of solid-state sintering
In the last two decades, many phase-field models for solid-state sintering have been published. Two groups of models have emerged, with and without the contribution of rigid body motion. This paper first describes the previously published phase-field model with an advection term driven by rigid body motion. The model is then used to investigate the differences between models with and without rigid body motion in new benchmark geometries exhibiting markedly different behavior. Sensitivity studies concerning the parameters of the rigid-body motion model are conducted and their effects on equilibrium and kinetic properties explored. In particular, it is shown by simulations that a shrinkage rate independent of system size requires the inclusion of an advection term. Finally, the reason behind this behavior is explored and implications for diffusion-only models are drawn
English as a Foreign/Second Language in Secondary Education Materials and Links for Teaching and Learning
http://www.isabelperez.comSite at a glance Isabel's ESL site is an educational website that provides plenty of useful online materials for teachers and learners of ESL/EFL at secondary education level. It is addressed to both learners and teachers who can find here hundreds of resources, including interactive exercises, teaching ideas and various links of interest, together with papers and other academic materials to be disseminated among teaching practitioners. The site was first set up back in 1997 by Isabel Pérez Torres, an experienced CALL researcher and practitioner. Isabel herself maintains the site and frequently updates it

John's ESL Community - English Interactive
John's ESL Community - English Interactive is an interactive website with a double portal for students and teachers. It offers a wide range of learning and teaching resources, with over 350 activities for students, including quizzes, games and exercises of many kinds, as well as plenty of class resources for ESL teachers. It is claimed to be updated almost daily. There is the possibility of obtaining a free e-mail account. Content is sorted by communicative skills and linguistic topics. It was set up in 1995 by John Erskin. It makes wide use of JavaScript interactive resources. Its overall objective is to provide general linguistic practice at different levels of general English and in different formats. English is also the vehicular language for the whole site. Multimedia includes audio and graphics, but no video. Plug- ins, software and files in general are easy to access and download
