A production model and maintenance planning model for the process industry
In this paper a model is developed to simultaneously plan preventive maintenance and production in a process industry environment, where maintenance planning is extremely important. The model schedules production jobs and preventive maintenance jobs, while minimizing costs associated with production, backorders, corrective maintenance and preventive maintenance. The formulation of the model is flexible, so that it can be adapted to several production situations. The performance of the model is discussed and alternate solution procedures are suggested.Production Models;Maintenance;production

Medicare Part D: Avoiding the “Donut Hole” and Cost-related Medication Nonadherence
Problem: Studies have shown that only ~50% of patients with chronic conditions take their medications as prescribed. Patient nonadherence can be due to forgetfulness, desire to avoid adverse side effects, and high costs of medications, particularly in patients with low incomes, multiple chronic health problems, and no prescription coverage. Attempting to reduce medication costs by taking less than prescribed dose does not allow for full therapeutic benefits, and may put patients at increased risk for declining health. Consequences of cost-related nonadherence (CRN) and underuse: increased ED visits, psychiatric admissions, nursing home admissions, and decreased health status. In patients with asthma, medication nonadherence has led to increased hospitalization rates and other adverse outcomes. Up to 88% of patients with asthma do not properly follow their inhaled medication regimen. CRN behaviors are influenced by financial pressures and polypharmacy. However, physicians and other members of the health system may prevent these behaviors by fostering trust, prescribing cheaper medications, and providing access to prescription assistance programs.https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/fmclerk/1011/thumbnail.jp
The snowball effect of customer slowdown in critical many-server systems
Customer slowdown describes the phenomenon that a customer's service
requirement increases with experienced delay. In healthcare settings, there is
substantial empirical evidence for slowdown, particularly when a patient's
delay exceeds a certain threshold. For such threshold slowdown situations, we
design and analyze a many-server system that leads to a two-dimensional Markov
process. Analysis of this system leads to insights into the potentially
detrimental effects of slowdown, especially in heavy-traffic conditions. We
quantify the consequences of underprovisioning due to neglecting slowdown,
demonstrate the presence of a subtle bistable system behavior, and discuss in
detail the snowball effect: A delayed customer has an increased service
requirement, causing longer delays for other customers, who in turn due to
slowdown might require longer service times.Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures -- version 3 fixes a typo in an equation. in

How and why does Lewis Carrol set the events in the novel Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There around a strategy game such as chess?
This extended essay analysis the reasons and ways Lewis Carrol used chess, in order to describe the events of growing up and nonsense in Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There more effectively. It includes the explanations of the chess moves in the novel, similar characteristics of the figures with chess pieces, the similarities of the landscape with a chess board with references to this piece of literature and many quotations for further understanding and explanation. Also the theme of growing up and other references of chess in the novel are explained with examples. Growing up is also examined with the theme of chess, as well as chess being a metaphor to life and faith. Furthermore, the relationship of Lewis Carrol with math is briefly explained and many other references of math are explored. The purpose of this study is to understand Lewis Carrol in using chess and explore how the storyline is built around a chess game.
In the conclusion, it is validated that chess, in the novel, represents life itself with all opportunities and bad calls. Theme of nonsense is depicted in the story to strengthen the references to growing up, by symbolizing the understanding of logic of children, which has no sense within

When FDI Flows from Rich to Poor Countries: Do democracy and economic reform matter? CEPS Working Document, No. 251, 12 October 2006
Foreign direct investment (FDI) is an instrument of international capital flow and it also shares some features of international trade flows as it is often associated with intra-firm trade by multinational corporations. Combining features from both ‘growth-type’ and ‘gravity-type’ models, we argue that democracy and economic reform in emerging economies have a joint positive impact on FDI inflows from advanced countries. This effect of democracy and economic reform is robust even when the EU membership negotiations are taken into account. We conclude that the role of democracy and market-oriented reform is robust and widespread beyond European borders. On the other hand, our results can be interpreted as evidence that prospects of joining the EU acts as an anchor for the host country
