Chemical and oxygen isotopic composition of Roman and late Antique glass from northern Greece
The present paper emphasizes the importance of measuring the oxygen isotopic and chemical compositions of ancient glass, in
order to constrain some features such as age, raw materials, and production technologies and to identify the \u201cfingerprint\u201d of local
productions. In this context, thirty-nine Roman and late Antique glass samples and eight chert samples fromnorthern Greece were
selected and analysed for their oxygen isotopic and chemical compositions. Results show that the majority of glass samples are
produced using natron as flux and have 18O values of about 15.5\u2030, plus or minus a few tenths of one per mil, suggesting that raw
materials probably come from Levantine area. Four samples are heavily enriched in 18O, and their chemical composition clearly
shows that they were made with soda plant ash as flux. Isotopic and chemical data of Greek chert samples support the hypothesis
of local production of the above samples. About half of the glass samples have chemical compositions, which allow their age to be
constrained to the late Antique period. For the remaining glass, similarities with literature compositional groups are reported and
discussed
In Vitro Evaluation of an Active Heat-and-Moisture Exchanger: The Hygrovent Gold
BACKGROUND: To improve the heat and humidification that can be achieved with aheat-and-moisture exchanger (HME),a hybrid active (ie,adds heat and water) HME,the Hygrovent Gold,was developed. We evaluated in vitro the performance of theHygrovent Gold.
METHODS: We tested the Hygrovent Gold (with and without its supplemental heat andmoisture options activated),the Hygrobac,and the Hygrovent S. We measured theabsolute humidity,using a test lung ventilated at minute volumes of 5,10,and15 L/min,in normothermic (expired temperature 34 degrees C) and hypothermic(expired temperature 28 degrees C) conditions. We also measured the HMEs' flowresistance and weight after 24 h and 48 h.
RESULTS: In its active mode the Hygrovent Gold provided the highest absolutehumidity,independent of minute volume,in both normothermia and hypothermia. Therespective normothermia and hypothermia absolute humidity values at 10 L/min were36.3 + 1.3 mg/L and 27.1 + 1.0 mg/L with the active Hygrovent Gold,33.9 + 0.5mg/L and 24.2 + 0.8 mg/L with the passive Hygrovent Gold,33.8 + 0.56 mg/L and24.4 + 0.4 mg/L with the Hygrobac,and 33.9 + 0.8 mg/L and 24.6 + 0.6 mg/L withthe Hygrovent S. The efficiency of the tested HMEs did not change over time. At24 h and 48 h the increase in weight and flow resistance was highest in theactive Hygrovent Gold.
CONCLUSIONS: The passive Hygrovent Gold provided adequate heat and moisture innormothermia,but the active Hygrovent Gold provided the highest humidity,inboth normothermia and hypothermia
Reperti lapidei di et\ue0 romana rinvenuti a Fornovo Taro: provenienza e circolazione
Nelle collezioni del Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Parma tra i reperti litici di et\ue0 romana figurano anche tre oggetti recuperati a Fornovo Taro o nelle sue adiacenze diversi per contesto di ritrovamento e destinazione d\u2019uso, di cui si \ue8 analizzata la pietra ai fini di determinarne la provenienza e le possibili rotte commerciali. In particolare sono stati presi in esame:- una epigrafe frammentaria (n.inv. L 49), databile al II secolo d.C., gi\ue0 murata in uno dei pilastri della Pieve ed entrata a far parte delle collezioni museali nel 18671;
- una piccola scultura raffigurante Afrodite accovacciata secondo il modello dello scultore ellenistico Doidalsas (n.inv. MANPr 31963), recuperata negli anni Ottanta del secolo scorso al margine occidentale di Piazza IV Novembre, databile ai primi decenni sempre del II secolo d.C.2;
- una base di colonna (mancante di n.inv. e abbreviata con la sigla BCG), recuperata nel 1980 a Roncolungo di Sivizzano tra i materiali accatastati ai margini della strada statale dal proprietario del terreno in attesa di disfarsene
Single-step Au-catalysed synthesis and microstructural characterization of core-shell Ge/In-Te nanowires by MOCVD
We report on the self-assembly of core-shell Ge/In-Te nanowires (NWs) on single crystal Si substrates by Metalorganic Chemical Vapour Deposition (MOCVD), coupled to the Vapour-Liquid-Solid (VLS) mechanism, catalysed by Au nanoparticles (NPs). The NWs are formed by a crystalline Ge core and an InTe (II) shell, have diameters down to 15 nm and show <110> oriented growth direction. The role of the MOCVD process parameters and of the NPs size in determining the NWs core-shell microstructure and their alignment was investigated by high-resolution TEM, EDX, XRD and Raman spectroscopy
The Narrative Approach in Service-Learning Methodology: A Case Study
The U.S. National and Community Service Act (1990) defines service-learning as “a methodology that extends classroom learning into real-life situations through participation in service experiences organized by collaborating schools and communities.” Reflection represents a very important phase in this methodology; indeed, students build the meaning of their experiences through reflection. For this reason, teachers, instructors, and professors need effective methods for improving student reflection. Can the narrative approach help students to reflect on service experiences? This article presents part of a research project on how the use of the narrative approach in the reflection phase of service-learning can improve critical thinking in students. In particular, it describes a case study of the Freshmen Honors Symposium and service-learning experience at a U.S. university and presents a qualitative analysis of 40 student narratives
Ecotoxicity assessment of fluoroquinolones and sulfonamides, in two saltwater organisms
openI Fluorochinoloni (FQs) e i Sulfamidici (SAs) sono ampiamente utilizzati come
antimicrobici sia in ambito medico che veterinario, grazie alla loro efficacia e al
loro ampio spettro d'azione contro diverse specie microbiche patogene.
Tuttavia, ciò ha comportato la loro diffusa presenza nell'ambiente acquatico. Le
fonti di contaminazione sono costituite dagli scarichi delle case farmaceutiche,
dagli scarichi urbani, dagli impianti di acquacoltura e dai terreni agricoli
fertilizzati con letami/liquami provenienti da animali oggetto di trattamenti di
massa. L'effetto di questi antimicrobici sull'ambiente acquatico è ben
documentato nella letteratura scientifica, sia per quanto riguarda le acque
superficiali che i sedimenti di fiumi e laghi; tuttavia, molto poco si conosce
circa il loro impatto sugli ecosistemi marini. La presente tesi ha valutato
l'ecotossicità di otto antibiotici, quattro FQs e quattro SAs, su due organismi
marini: l'alga Phaeodactylum tricornutum e il crostaceo Artemia salina. Questa
scelta è stata motivata dall'importanza di valutare gli effetti sui primi due livelli
trofici, che possono avere ripercussioni bottom-up sull'ecosistema marino.
Saggi di inibizione della crescita algale (72h) sono stati eseguiti su P.
tricornutum, mentre test di immobilizzazione acuta (48h) sono stati eseguiti su
A. salina. I risultati hanno evidenziato, in P. tricornutum, effetti tossici rilevanti
dei SAs, mentre con i FQs gli effetti sono stati osservati solo a concentrazioni
piuttosto elevate. I SAs, a differenza dei FQs, hanno dimostrato, in tre casi su
quattro, di avere un effetto algicida che, apparentemente, non viene limitato
dall’aggiunta di acido folico al medium di coltura. Per quanto riguarda, invece,
A. salina, gli effetti avversi sono stati osservati solo con il Ciprofloxacin,
suggerendo il possibile impiego di questo farmaco in futuri test di tossicità
cronica. Confrontando le EC 50 misurate in P. tricornutum con le concentrazioni
ambientali riportate in letteratura, è stato possibile svolgere una valutazione
preliminare del Quoziente di Rischio (RQ) che ha evidenziato Sulfadiazina e
Sulfametossazolo come i due antibiotici che meritano maggiore attenzione.Fluoroquinolones (FQs) and Sulfonamides (SAs) are widely used
as antimicrobials in both medical and veterinary fields due to their
effectiveness and broad spectrum of action against various
pathogenic microbial species. However, this has resulted in their
widespread presence in the aquatic environment. Sources of
contamination include pharmaceutical discharges, urban sewage,
aquaculture facilities, and agricultural lands fertilized with
manure/slurry from animals subjected to mass medication. The
effect of these antimicrobials on the aquatic environment is well
documented in the scientific literature, both concerning surface
waters and river and lake sediments; however, very little is known
about their impact on marine ecosystems. This thesis evaluated
the ecotoxicity of eight antibiotics, four FQs, and four SAs, on two
salt-water organisms: the algae Phaeodactylum tricornutum and
the crustacean Artemia salina. This choice was motivated by the
importance of assessing effects on the first two trophic levels,
which can have bottom-up repercussions on the marine
ecosystem. Algal growth inhibition tests (72h) were run in P.
tricornutum whilst acute immobilization tests (48h) were
performed on A. salina. The results highlighted significant toxic
effects of SAs on P. tricornutum, while with FQs, effects were
observed only at rather high concentrations. Unlike FQs, SAs, in
three out of four cases, demonstrated algicidal effects, which
apparently are not limited by the addition of folic acid to the
culture medium. Regarding A. salina, adverse effects were
observed only with Ciprofloxacin, suggesting its potential use in
future chronic toxicity tests. By comparing the EC50 values
measured in P. tricornutum with the environmental concentrations
reported in the literature, a preliminary assessment of the Risk
Quotient (RQ) was possible, highlighting Sulfadiazine and
Sulfamethoxazole as the two antibiotics that deserve the most
attention
Róticos em coda externa de verbos no infinitivo no português caipira paulista
Within the framework of Pluridimensional Dialectology (RADTKE; THUN, 1996; THUN, 2000, 2005 etc.), this study presents both a record and an analysis of variants in final syllable coda of the infinitive ending followed by a break, as they are currently spoken in the Médio Tietê region, the birthplace of São Paulo state's "Caipira" culture. The data were collected by Figueiredo Jr. (2019) in ten localities in the region: Santana de Parnaíba, Pirapora do Bom Jesus, Araçariguama, São Roque, Sorocaba, Itu, Porto Feliz, Tietê, Capivari, and Piracicaba. The methodological instrument applied is the Phonetic- Phonological Questionnaire made by "Atlas Linguístico do Brasil" (COMITÊ NACIONAL DO PROJETO ALiB, 2001). Eighty informants partook in the research, evenly women and men, young (18–36) and old (≥ 55) individuals, and with low and high education. The variants collected are: retroflex approximant ([ɻ]), alveolar tap ([ɾ]), phonetic zero ([Ø]), and alveolar trill ([r]). The analysis is based on descriptive statistics and pluridimensional dialectological cartography, from which a set of relevant conclusions is drawn. One of them is that the retroflex approximant occurs as the most frequent variant from a broad perspective and, from a correlational viewpoint, another one is that, according to evidence, the external factor influencing the prevalence of the retroflex approximant is not diastratic, nor diasexual, nor diatopic, but rather diagenerational.Com aporte teórico-metodológico da Dialetologia Pluridimensional (RADTKE; THUN, 1996; THUN, 2000, 2005 etc.), este artigo documenta e analisa a variação em coda externa de desinência infinitiva seguida por pausa no berço da cultura caipira paulista, na região chamada Médio Tietê. Com aplicação do Questionário Fonético-Fonológico do Atlas Linguístico do Brasil (COMITÊ NACIONAL DO PROJETO ALiB, 2001), os dados foram coletados in loco por Figueiredo Jr. (2019) em dez localidades: Santana de Parnaíba, Pirapora do Bom Jesus, Araçariguama, São Roque, Sorocaba, Itu, Porto Feliz, Tietê, Capivari e Piracicaba. Os inquiridos, totalizando 80, eram equitativamente mulheres e homens, jovens (18–36) e velhos (≥ 55), com baixa escolaridade (desde analfabetos até secundaristas incompletos) e alta (a partir de estudos superiores incompletos). As variantes documentadas são: aproximante retroflexa ([ɻ]), tepe alveolar ([ɾ]), apagamento fonético ([Ø]) e vibrante alveolar ([r]). A análise baseia-se em estatística descritiva e cartas dialetológicas pluridimensionais, de que um conjunto relevante de conclusões decorre, entre as quais, de uma perspectiva ampla, a variável linguística estudada é saturada sobretudo pela aproximante retroflexa e, de uma perspectiva correlacional, o fator externo de influência no estabelecimento da prevalência da aproximante retroflexa não é, segundo evidências, nem diastrática, nem diagenérica e nem diatópica, mas sim diageracional

Os impactos socioambientais provocados pelo ciclone subtropical Eçaí, em Florianópolis

GeografiaOs casos de vendavais e ciclones em Florianópolis são recorrentes e vêm causando danos sociais e econômicos significativos em diversos momentos da história recente. O objetivo deste trabalho foi investigar os impactos socioambientais vinculados ao ciclone subtropical Eçaí em Florianópolis ocorrido em dezembro de 2016. Utilizou-se como base de análise relatos jornalísticos e o Formulário de Informação de Desastre (FIDE), assim como a Declaração Municipal de Atuação Emergencial (DMATE), todos fornecidos pela Defesa Civil de Santa Catarina. Os procedimentos metodológicos consistiram na identificação e caracterização dos eventos meteorológicos atuantes, quantificação dos elementos climáticos como precipitação, pressão atmosférica e vento através de dados de estações meteorológicas, análise dos impactos socioambientais e dos danos e prejuízos causados ao município. Os resultados revelaram através de um mapeamento quais foram as áreas mais atingidas do município de Florianópolis, assim como a quantificação do prejuízo ao cofre público e os tipos de danos oriundos do desastre. A pesquisa mostrou que o Eçaí apresentou ventos predominantes no quadrante sul, os quais atingiram rajadas de mais de 100 km/h e que afetaram 250 mil pessoas, deixando 1500 desalojados e 2 feridos.Cyclones and gale-force winds are recurrent in Florianópolis and have caused significant social and economic damage in recent history. The objective of this work was to investigate the socio-environmental impacts linked to the subtropical cyclone Eçaí in Florianópolis which occurred in December 2016. Sources include a survey of journalistic reports, the Disaster Information Form (FIDE), and municipal decrees, such as the Municipal Declaration of Emergency Protocol (DMATE), provided by the Civil Defense of Santa Catarina. Procedures included identification and characterization of the active meteorological events, quantification of climatic elements such as precipitation, atmospheric pressure, and wind from data provided by meteorological stations, and analysis of the socio-environmental impacts of damages and losses caused to the city. The results mapped which areas were the most affected within the city of Florianópolis and quantified the financial damage incurred by the city as well as the scope of damages arising from the disaster. The research showed that Eçaí had winds predominantly in the South quadrant with wind gusts of over 100 km/h - affecting 250,000 people and leaving 1,500 people displaced and 2 injured
