Trust In Personal And Impersonal Forms Its Antecedents And Consequences: A Conceptual Analysis Within Organizational Context

Although Mayer et al.’s (1995) integrative model of organizational trust has clarified some confusion regarding the concept of interpersonal trust involving two specific parties by differentiating between factors that cause trust, trust itself, and outcomes of trust through 1) it defined trust as the willingness of a party to be vulnerable to the actions of another party,2) trust is in turn influenced by a trustor’s propensity to trust, the trustor’s perceived characteristics of a trustee (e.g., trustworthiness of trustee based on his/her ability, benevolence, and  integrity), 3) the trust leads to actual risk taking in a relationship since behavioral trust is the assuming of risk, and 4), the desired outcome results from the result of risk taking. But researchers like Luhman (1979), McCauley & Kuhnert (1992), Zaheer et al.(1998), Costigan et al.(1998), McKnight et al.(1998,2002), and Atkinson and Butcher( 2003) are of the view that root of trust lies in individual relationships is not in opposition to the experience of trust both inside interpersonal relationships and as an institutional phenomenon beyond interpersonal relationships. Moreover, Colquitt et al.(2007) investigated, it remains unclear that which trust antecedents have the strongest relationships with trust whether trust fully mediates the effects of trustworthiness and trust propensity on behavioral outcomes, and do trust relationship vary according to whether the trustee is a leader versus a coworker? Therefore, the aim of this conceptual paper is to investigate the phenomenon of trust in its personal and impersonal forms i.e., interpersonal and institutional(organizational) trust with multiple foci i.e. coworkers, supervisor, and institution(organization) through addressing threefold agenda; (1) to explore the concept of trust by distinguishing its antecedents i.e., trustor’s propensity to trust, the trustor’s perceived characteristics of a trustee, and institutional trust from trust, (2) to explore whether trust fully mediates the effects of trustworthiness, trust propensity, and institutional trust on behavioral outcomes such as organizational commitment, organizational citizenship behavior, and employees task performance, and (3) to explore that do trust relationships vary according to whether the trustee is a supervisor/leader versus a coworker

The Effect of Competitive Rivalry on Internal Communication in Private Healthcare Organizations: Evidence from Istanbul, Turkey

    Get PDF
Both competitive rivalry and internal communication play a crucial role for a business to position itself in a favourable manner in order to succeed particularly in a hostile environment. While numerous studies present the importance of competitive rivalry and of communication, even internal communication separately, little is known about the specific linkage of how competitive rivalry affects communication in the literature. Within the framework of internal communication, this study focuses on the notion that competitive rivalry is related to the path and style of communication as well as to the usage of internal communication tools but not to quality of communication. Thus, our research presents the linkage and the interaction between competitive rivalry and internal communication, of which the results indicate that, overall, competitive rivalry has a significant direct positive influence on internal communication dimensions in terms of path, style and quality of communication, as well as usage of communication tools in healthcare organizations

This study aimed to investigate the predictive role of serum C-reactive protein (CRP) and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) on renal mass biopsy outcomes. A total of 71 patients with suspected kidney masses who underwent renal mass biopsy procedure between January 2017 and January 2021 were retrospectively evaluated. Pathological results after the procedure were obtained and pre-procedural serum CRP and NLR levels were extracted from the patients’ data. The patients were grouped into benign and malignant pathology groups according to the histopathology results. The parameters were compared between the groups. Diagnostic role of the parameters in terms of sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values was also determined. Additionally, Pearson correlation analysis, and univariate and multivariate cox proportional hazard regression analyses were also performed to investigate the above association with tumor diameter and pathology results, respectively. At the end of the analyses, a total of 60 patients had malignant pathology on histopathological investigations of the mass biopsy specimens, whereas the remaining 11 patients had a benign pathological diagnosis. Significantly higher CRP and NLR levels were detected in the malignant pathology group. The parameters positively correlated with the malignant mass diameter, as well. Serum CRP and NLR determined the malignant masses before the biopsy with sensitivity and specificity of 76.6 and 81.8%, and 88.3 and 45.4%, respectively. Moreover, univariate and multivariate analyses showed that serum CRP level had a significant predictive value for malignant pathology (HR: 0.998, 95% CI: 0.940–0.967, P < 0.001 and HR: 0.951, 95% CI: 0.936–0.966, P < 0.001, respectively). In conclusion, serum CRP and NLR levels were significantly different in patients with malignant pathology after renal mass biopsy compared to the patients with benign pathology. Serum CRP level, in particular, diagnosed malignant pathologies with acceptable sensitivity and specificity values. Additionally, it had a substantial predictive role in determining the malign masses prior the biopsy. Therefore, pre-biopsy serum CRP and NLR levels may be used to predict the diagnostic outcomes of renal mass biopsy in clinical practice. Further studies with larger cohorts can prove our findings in the future

Cultural intelligence has been subject to so many studies in literature. Besides cultural intelligence, intercultural communication competence is emphasized in literature. Relationship between cultural intelligence and intercultural communication competence is presented in literature. Personality traits are very changeable as individuals have different personality traits. This difference influence cultural intelligence and intercultural communication competence. Our study focuses on the relationship between personality traits, cultural intelligence and intercultural communication competence. The study is conducted on 4 senior employees of two firms operating in automotive industry in Turkey. To examine the relations, interviews was done with 3 senior employees working in German origin firm and 1 senior employee working in South Korean origin firm. The obtained data from the interviews are evaluated through the depth examination. Findings revealed that cultural intelligence has positively influence on intercultural communication competence and also personality traits on the cultural intelligence and intercultural communication competence. Also it is supposed that effect of personality traits decrease on intercultural communication competence when cultural intelligence is clearly considered. (C) 2016 The Authors. Conceptualizing the Inter-firm Relationship Quality in International Trade and an Application on Textile Exporters

    No full text
The purpose of this study is to re-conceptualize the relationship quality that occurs in buyer-seller exchanges within the international trade context. In relevant literature, extensive work has been done to define the relationship quality; however its particular aspects pertaining to international transactions require further examination. This study's conceptual inferences, which are derived from the current knowledge, have been tested by an empirical research. The scope of the research is the exchanges between exporting firms in Turkey and their customers abroad. In this respect, a quantitative research design is employed and data is collected from the sample group through a survey. Based on 165 observations, the findings support the approach that relationship quality in international trade is composed of trust, satisfaction, and relational learning dimensions. The research makes a theoretical contribution by highlighting the importance of neglected relational learning concept in inter-firm relationship quality research in the context of international exchanges

Antecedents of trust in industrial districts: an empirical analysis of inter-firm relations in a Turkish industrial district

    No full text
Structural features and institutional settings of industrial districts, rather than contracts as a co-coordinating mechanism, promote trust in exchanges between firms in industrial districts. Based on this assumption, the paper explores the antecedents of trust in a Turkish industrial district at three levels: institutional environment; institutional arrangements; and inter-firm exchanges. In relation to institutional environment, dominant institutions of the Turkish economy - mainly state and finance - and their policies that undermine the role of SMEs in economic development are studied. In this context a third institution, the 'district association' that has a vital role in promoting trust-based governance has been analysed. At the second level, formal and informal institutional arrangements that govern the web of exchanges between. firms are surveyed. The third level of analysis is directed at entrepreneurs and their attitudes towards family, friendship, expertise and reputation are studied. The research site is the Merter textile district in Istanbul. Data for second and third levels of analysis has been collected through structured interviews and is analysed quantitatively. For institutions and institutional environment, data has been collected mainly by in-depth interviews and is supported by secondary data. Research. findings show that informal institutional arrangements are more important than formal arrangements and reputation and expertise of the other. firm is more important than family-friendship connections as antecedents of trust
