Cultural modulation of face and gaze scanning in young children
Previous research has demonstrated that the way human adults look at others’ faces is modulated by their cultural background, but very little is known about how such a culture-specific pattern of face gaze develops. The current study investigated the role of cultural background on the development of face scanning in young children between the ages of 1 and 7 years, and its modulation by the eye gaze direction of the face. British and Japanese participants’ eye movements were recorded while they observed faces moving their eyes towards or away from the participants. British children fixated more on the mouth whereas Japanese children fixated more on the eyes, replicating the results with adult participants. No cultural differences were observed in the differential responses to direct and averted gaze. The results suggest that different patterns of face scanning exist between different cultures from the first years of life, but differential scanning of direct and averted gaze associated with different cultural norms develop later in life
Mindblind eyes: an absence of spontaneous theory of mind in Asperger syndrome
Adults with Asperger syndrome can understand mental states such as desires and beliefs (mentalizing) when explicitly prompted to do so, despite having impairments in social communication. We directly tested the hypothesis that such individuals nevertheless fail to mentalize spontaneously. To this end, we used an eye-tracking task that has revealed the spontaneous ability to mentalize in typically developing infants. We showed that, like infants, neurotypical adults’ (n = 17 participants) eye movements anticipated an actor’s behavior on the basis of her false belief. This was not the case for individuals with Asperger syndrome (n = 19). Thus, these individuals do not attribute mental states spontaneously, but they may be able to do so in explicit tasks through compensatory learning
The development and neural basis of referential gaze perception
Infants are sensitive to the referential information conveyed by others’ eye gaze, which could be one of the developmental foundations of theory of mind. To investigate the neural correlates of gaze–object relations, we recorded ERPs from adults and 9-month-old infants while they watched scenes containing gaze shifts either towards or away from the location of a preceding object. In adults, object-incongruent gaze shifts elicited enhanced ERP amplitudes over the occipito-temporal area (N330). In infants, a similar posterior ERP component (N290) was greater for object-incongruent gaze shifts, which suggests that by the age of 9 months infants encode referential information of gaze in a similar way to adults. In addition, in infants we observed an early frontal ERP component (anterior N200), which showed higher amplitude in response to the perception of object-congruent gaze shifts. This component may reflect fast-track processing of socially relevant information, such as the detection of communicative or informative situations, and could form a developmental foundation for attention sharing, social learning and theory of mind
Presence of contagious yawning in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder
Most previous studies suggest diminished susceptibility to contagious yawning in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, it could be driven by their atypical attention to the face. To test this hypothesis, children with ASD and typically developing (TD) children were shown yawning and control movies. To ensure participants' attention to the face, an eye tracker controlled the onset of the yawning and control stimuli. Results demonstrated that both TD children and children with ASD yawned more frequently when they watched the yawning stimuli than the control stimuli. It is suggested therefore that the absence of contagious yawning in children with ASD, as reported in previous studies, might relate to their weaker tendency to spontaneously attend to others' faces
Selective learning and teaching among Japanese and German children
Despite an increasing number of studies demonstrating that young children selectively learn from
others, and a few studies of children’s selective teaching, the evidence almost exclusively comes
from Western cultures, and cross-cultural comparison in this line of work is very rare. In the
present research, we investigated Japanese and German children’s selective learning and
teaching abilities. We found clear cultural differences. Japanese children were better at
selectively teaching an ignorant person over a knowledgeable person than at selectively learning
from knowledgeable others. By contrast, German children were better at choosing to learn from
a knowledgeable rather than from an ignorant person than at selectively teaching ignorant others.
The present findings suggest that the development of human learning and teaching, especially the
tendency to take into account others' knowledge status, is strongly affected by cultural
background
Atypical disengagement from faces and its modulation by the control of eye fixation in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder
By using the gap overlap task, we investigated disengagement from faces and objects in children (9–17 years old) with and without autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and its neurophysiological correlates. In typically developing (TD) children, faces elicited larger gap effect, an index of attentional engagement, and larger saccade-related event-related potentials (ERPs), compared to objects. In children with ASD, by contrast, neither gap effect nor ERPs differ between faces and objects. Follow-up experiments demonstrated that instructed fixation on the eyes induces larger gap effect for faces in children with ASD, whereas instructed fixation on the mouth can disrupt larger gap effect in TD children. These results suggest a critical role of eye fixation on attentional engagement to faces in both groups
Pupil response hazard rates predict perceived gaze durations
We investigated the mechanisms for evaluating perceived gaze-shift duration. Timing relies on the accumulation of endogenous physiological signals. Here we focused on arousal, measured through pupil dilation, as a candidate timing signal. Participants timed gaze-shifts performed by face stimuli in a Standard/Probe comparison task. Pupil responses were binned according to “Longer/Shorter” judgements in trials where Standard and Probe were identical. This ensured that pupil responses reflected endogenous arousal fluctuations opposed to differences in stimulus content. We found that pupil hazard rates predicted the classification of sub-second intervals (steeper dilation =“Longer” classifications). This shows that the accumulation of endogenous arousal signals informs gaze-shift timing judgements. We also found that participants relied exclusively on the 2nd stimulus to perform the classification, providing insights into timing strategies under conditions of maximum uncertainty. We observed no dissociation in pupil responses when timing equivalent neutral spatial displacements, indicating that a stimulus-dependent timer exploits arousal to time gaze-shifts
Associations between language development and skin conductance responses to faces and eye gaze in children with autism spectrum disorder
Attention to social stimuli is associated with language development, and arousal is associated with the increased viewing of stimuli. We investigated whether skin conductance responses (SCRs) are associated with language development in ASD: a population that shows abnormalities in both attention to others and language development. A sample of 32 children with ASD (7 y – 15 y; M =9 y) was divided into two groups, based on language onset histories. A typically developing comparison group consisted of 18 age and IQ matched children. SCRs were taken as the participants viewed faces. SCRs differentiated the ASD group based on language onset and were associated with abnormal attention to gaze in infancy and subsequent language development

Measuring the value of social engagement in adults with and without autism
Differences in social communication are commonly reported in autism spectrum condition (ASC). A recent theory attributes this to a reduced motivation to engage with others, that is, deficits in social motivation. However, there are currently few simple, direct, behavioural ways to test this claim. This study uses a new behavioural measure of social motivation to test if preferences for direct gaze and face stimuli are linked to autistic traits or an ASC diagnosis. Our novel choose-a-movie (CAM) paradigm measures the effort participants invest to see particular stimuli. This aspect of social motivation is also known as social seeking.
Methods
In experiment 1, 80 typical adults completed the CAM task and a measure of autistic traits. In experiment 2, 30 adults with ASC and 24 age/IQ-matched typical adults completed the CAM paradigm.
Results
The results from study one showed that typical adults prefer social stimuli over non-social, but this preference is weaker in those with higher levels of autistic traits. In study two, adults with ASC showed a significant reduction in their preference for direct gaze but little difference in their preference for faces without direct gaze.
Conclusions
These data show that social motivation can be measured in a simple, direct, behavioural paradigm. Furthermore, adults with ASC prefer direct gaze less than typical adults but may not avoid faces without direct gaze. This data advance our understanding of how social motivation may differ between those with and without autism
Atypical emotional anticipation in high-functioning autism
"Background: Understanding and anticipating others’ mental or emotional states relies on the processing of social
cues, such as dynamic facial expressions. Individuals with high-functioning autism (HFA) may process these cues
differently from individuals with typical development (TD) and purportedly use a ‘mechanistic’ rather than a
‘mentalistic’ approach, involving rule- and contingency-based interpretations of the stimuli. The study primarily
aimed at examining whether the judgments of facial expressions made by individuals with TD and HFA would be
similarly affected by the immediately preceding dynamic perceptual history of that face. A second aim was to
explore possible differences in the mechanisms underpinning the perceptual judgments in the two groups.
Methods: Twenty-two adults with HFA and with TD, matched for age, gender and IQ, were tested in three
experiments in which dynamic, ‘ecologically valid’ offsets of happy and angry facial expressions were presented.
Participants evaluated the expression depicted in the last frame of the video clip by using a 5-point scale ranging
from slightly angry via neutral to slightly happy. Specific experimental manipulations prior to the final facial
expression of the video clip allowed examining contributions of bottom-up mechanisms (sequential contrast/
context effects and representational momentum) and a top-down mechanism (emotional anticipation) to
distortions in the perception of the final expression.
Results: In experiment 1, the two groups showed a very similar perceptual bias for the final expression of joy-to-neutral
and anger-to-neutral videos (overshoot bias). In experiment 2, a change in the actor’s identity during the clip removed
the bias in the TD group, but not in the HFA group. In experiment 3, neutral-to-joy/anger-to-neutral sequences generated
an undershoot bias (opposite to the overshoot) in the TD group, whereas no bias was observed in the HFA group.
Conclusions: We argue that in TD individuals the perceptual judgments of other’s facial expressions were underpinned
by an automatic emotional anticipation mechanism. In contrast, HFA individuals were primarily influenced by visual
features, most notably the contrast between the start and end expressions, or pattern extrapolation. We critically discuss
the proposition that automatic emotional anticipation may be induced by motor simulation of the perceived dynamic
facial expressions and discuss its implications for autism.
