Mixed Oligopoly, privatization and strategic trade policy: a note

    Get PDF
In debates over privatization and global competition mixed Cournot oligopoly models have been used to show that the presence of a state-owned enterprise in the host country is always associated with a distortionary effect that may justify privatization even if the public firm is just as efficient as its private counterparts. This study argues that this result is valid only under Cournot competition and Cournot competition is not a plausible modelling assumption in this context because in this type of market the firms’ simultaneous play strategies lack credibility.Privatization; Mixed oligopoly; Strategic Trade Policy

Finding Two Disjoint Simple Paths on Two Sets of Points is NP-Complete

Finding two disjoint simple paths on two given sets of points is a geometric problem introduced by Jeff Erickson. This problem has various applications in computational geometry, like robot motion planning, generating polygon etc. We will present a reduction from planar Hamiltonian path to this problem, and prove that it is NP-Complete. To the best of our knowledge, no study has considered its complexity up until now. We also present a reduction from planar Hamiltonian path problem to the problem of finding a path on given points in the presence of arbitrary obstacles and prove that it is NP-Complete too. Also, we present a heuristic algorithm with time complexity of O(n4) to solve this problem. The proposed algorithm first calculates the convex hull for each of the entry points and then produces two simple paths on the two entry point set

Market distortions and public enterprise strategies in an international mixed oligopoly

This study investigates the possible sources of distortions in an international mixed oligopoly. We extend the existing linear/quadratic model to a general framework and show that a public enterprise may either serve as a regulatory device or may itself create an additional level of distortion. Which of these is the case depends critically on the timing of firms output decisions. We then extend the basic quantity setting game to incorporate a preplay stage at which firms can choose the timing of action, rather than moving in an exogenously imposed sequence, in order to determine endogenously the equilibrium sequence of moves. We argue that the distortions associated with a public enterprise and the welfare gain of privatization found in earlier studies can be attributed to an arbitrary and unjustified modeling assumption concerning the order of play, rather than to public ownership.Privatization; International Mixed Oligopoly; Strategic Trade Policy

Ground state heavy baryon production in a relativistic quark-diquark model

We use current-current interaction to calculate the fragmentation functions to describe the production of spin-1/2, spin-1/2' and spin-3/2 baryons with massive constituents in a relativistic quark-diquark model. Our results are in their analytic forms and are applicable for singly, doubly and triply heavy baryons. We discuss the production of Ωbbc\Omega_{bbc}, Ωbcc\Omega_{bcc} and Ωccc\Omega_{ccc} baryons in some detail. The results are satisfactorily compared with those obtained for triply heavy baryons calculated in a perturbative regime within reasonable values of the parameters involved.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures. Background and Aim: Given the importance of test anxiety among gifted students, the present research was conducted to study the relationship between perception of parent’s affection and attachment styles with test anxiety. Materials and Methods: By means of simple random sampling, 300 subjects were selected out of all the gifted students in Khorramabad. Test Anxiety, perception of parents affection, and attachment styles questionnaires were used for collection data. Results: To analyze the data, Pearson correlation and regression were applied. The results showed that anxiety and avoidant attachment style and perception of father love predict test anxiety among both boys and girls in gifted student's school. However, there was not a meaningful relationship between attachment style and perception of mother love with test anxiety. Moreover, totally the results indicated that 9 percent of changes in test anxiety were predicted by attachment styles and perception of parent’s affection. And anxiety attachment style and perception of father love predict test anxiety. ‍Conclusion: According to the results if an individual has an avoidant attachment style he will experience the higher level of test anxiety
