Constructing (Film) art: Bourdieu's field model in a comparative context

In this paper we seek to apply Bourdieu’s approach to consecration, legitimacy and autonomization in the fields of art to the struggle to legitimize film as art.We examine the efficacy of Bourdieu’s theory in relation to the early ‘film-as-art’ campaign as it received institutional expression in the profoundly different economic, social and cultural circumstances of Brazil and Britain in the 1920s and 1930s. After tracing the broad history of film art movements in each case,we employ Bourdieu’s concepts of heteronomy/autonomy and degree of consecration as the principal axes in mapping the fields of film art in Britain and Brazil.We then compare the conditions of possibility for failure or success in institutionally establishing film as art in the two cases, and conclude with an evaluation of the utility of Bourdieu’s model when applied to film art in such diverse social, cultural and political circumstances

Globalização, cultura e subjetividade: discussão a partir dos meio de comunicação de massa

O artigo analisa o cenário da cultura global, com especial destaque à indústria cultural, visando a uma compreensão mais cuidadosa sobre a formação dos sujeitos no contexto contemporâneo. Apresenta parte da produção teórica sobre os meios de comunicação de massa, estabelecendo paralelos entre a discussão frankfurtiana, os estudos culturais e os que enfatizam a cultura no cotidiano. Analisa alguns embates que se definem nesse campo de estudos, com destaque à tensão entre homogeneização e diferenciação cultural, estabelecendo um diálogo desta temática com a produção de subjetividades no contexto global. Conclui apresentando a globalização como um fenômeno múltiplo, que pode levar a caminhos bem diversos, nos quais são localizáveis, desde os apelos ao universalismo cultural, que remeteriam a uma inclusão homogeneizadora; até diversos tipos de resistência a esse processo, com a formação de grupos identitários, movimentos xenófobos e até apropriações criativas desenvolvidas por grupos de cidadãos

Governing COVID-19 without government in Brazil: Ignorance, neoliberal authoritarianism, and the collapse of public health leadership

Brazil’s governance of the COVID-19 pandemic has been described as nothing short of tragic by several commentators. President Jair Bolsonaro’s dangerous brew of neoliberal authoritarianism, science denialism and ableism has plunged this country into catastrophe. In this article we argue that this form (or lack) of public health governance can best be described as governance without (central) government. We begin with an overview of public health governance in the country before introducing the main theoretical concepts that guide our analysis, namely the notions of ‘government by exception’ and ‘strategic ignorance’. Finally, we sketch the main features of this emerging form of (non)governance of COVID-19. We highlight the new forms of solidarity and mutual aid that have emerged in favelas and Indigenous communities, which have stepped in to fill the void left by a limited federal presence. The article concludes by reflecting on what this collapse of public health reveals about the limitations of democratic governance in the age of Bolsonaro
