Expatriation is a current process in companies to expand their international business. Expatriation is strongly related to multinational companies’ (MNC) performance abroad because the implementation of strategies occurs more slowly without the presence of the expatriate in the subsidiary. This research proposes an expatriation model as a process with three-phase that includes Human Resource Management policies and practices to show its contribution to business internationalization. The research is descriptive and qualitative, in which thirty semi-structured interviews were carried out with managers and expatriates from Brazilian and Portuguese MNCs. Data were analyzed using the content analysis technique supported by the MAXQDA software. The results show that there is no formal planning for expatriation in the MNCs examined. There is a greater diversity of informal practices that arise to fill the gaps in expatriation. The model shows diverse practices that can support the process, making it less painful for those involved and increasing the understanding of expatriation as an object of research. However, it is up to each MNC to adjust its perspectives to its operation contexts, as there is no intention to exhaust the model.
Increased Longevity of a Novel Gas Exchanger System for Low-Flow Veno-Venous Extracorporeal CO2 Removal in Acute Hypercapnic Respiratory Failure
For the continuance of their favours : Women, the public sphere and the print culture in England, 1750-1760
Focussing on letters from readers of ladies\u27 thinspace periodicals as well as advertisements placed by women in the provincial newspaper, The Ipswich Journal, this thesis historically examines women\u27s use of the growing print culture in England from 1750 to 1760. Notions that women overwhelmingly accepted and articulated the domestic sphere ideology at this time are contradicted by historical evidence. Despite the constraints imposed by prescriptive literature, women who used the print culture in eighteenth-century England asserted their public economic and social lives. Women\u27s public and non-domestic lives were not effectively stifled by the didactic literature and domestic ideology they daily faced, and thus prescriptive literature acted less in the simple hegemonic way that many feminist literary theorists insist. Constructions of norms of feminine behavior were constantly contested in the print culture in the 1750s, and women served as active and public historical agents
Tuning the optical properties of silicon quantum dots via surface functionalization with conjugated aromatic fluorophores
The authors acknowledge Karen Nygard at UWO Biotron for assistance with confocal microscopy. This work was financially supported by NSERC Canada Discovery (Charpentier).Silicon Quantum Dots (SQDs) have recently attracted great interest due to their excellent optical properties, low cytotoxicity, and ease of surface modification. The size of SQDs and type of ligand on their surface has a great influence on their optical properties which is still poorly understood. Here we report the synthesis and spectroscopic studies of three families of unreported SQDs functionalized by covalently linking to the aromatic fluorophores, 9-vinylphenanthrene, 1-vinylpyrene, and 3-vinylperylene. The results showed that the prepared functionalized SQDs had a highly-controlled diameter by HR-TEM, ranging from 1.7–2.1 nm. The photophysical measurements of the assemblies provided clear evidence for efficient energy transfer from the fluorophore to the SQD core. Fӧrster energy transfer is the likely mechanism in these assemblies. As a result of the photogenerated energy transfer process, the emission color of the SQD core could be efficiently tuned and its emission quantum efficiency enhanced. To demonstrate the potential application of the synthesized SQDs for bioimaging of cancer cells, the water-soluble perylene- and pyrene-capped SQDs were examined for fluorescent imaging of HeLa cells. The SQDs were shown to be of low cytotoxicity.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

Campus-Community Engagement: The Case of an Urban Agriculture Initiative at AUB
Dr. Shady Hamadeh
Dr. Giuliano MartinielloUrban Universities’ missions and actions are reflecting on their role in contributing to potential solutions to local and regional socio-economic problems through their civic engagement missions. However, urban universities are often seen as if they are “in” the community and not “of” the community. It has been proven that Urban Agriculture (UA) is a tool and a community engagement approach that urban universities have adopted in the aim of enhancing sustainability in the city and supporting educational missions across university campuses as a mutually beneficial initiative that contribute to campus-community engagement. AUB through its historic civic missions, has long been contributing to local communities, especially its neighborhood, the neighborhood of Ras Beirut. Yet, AUB still falls in the dilemma of bridging the gap between the service activities it provides and the reality on the ground. This study aims at investigating the different elements and stakeholders that are challenging the principles for enhancing and sustaining campus-community relationships of AUB and Ras Beirut and explore the concept of UA as a platform to support sustainability, and ensure reciprocity of campus-community relationship through civic engagement and service learning. The results expected will propose ideas and a set of recommendations to maintain relationship between campus and neighboring community through putting hands on and promoting a sustainable food system
