People Don’t Leave Companies: They Leave Managers

In a fully employed economic environment the retention of employees becomes a critical factor for organizational success. My curiosity to understand why employees leave organizations led me to a meta-analysis of the research literature of supervisory – employee relationships and supervisory training programs. This study attempts to answer the question, does intentional relationship building between supervisors and employees improve the organization’s retention rate? Research supports that supervisors have a significant impact on employee retention. The research also shows that there is strong movement away from traditional employee-supervisor relationships towards an employee centric culture. Organizations that invest in supervisory training and development programs see a positive return on investment, inclusive of the reduction of turnover. My research revealed a gap in the data. There is limited data available that focuses on how to develop supervisor’s skills in the area of intentional relationship building. This would be a good topic for future research

Analytical Decision-making Model for Addressing the Needs of Allied Health Students with Disabilities

The purposes of this article are to (1) review the literature on students with disabilities (SWD) in higher education with a particular focus on allied health and related professions, and (2) propose an analytical decision-making model for assessing students\u27 needs and providing reasonable accommodations in allied health education. Increasing numbers of SWD are entering higher education, but the rate of success for these students is lower than the rate for their nondisabled peers. A multitude of factors impact SWD, including the direct effects of the disabilities on learning and performing essential functions, academic and clinical faculty knowledge of the impact of disability in educational settings and their experience implementing accommodations, and the impact of legislation and institutional policies on service delivery. While all of these are important, the most critical issues appear to be academic and clinical faculty knowledge about how to address disability-related challenges in the educational environment and the support of SWD by those faculty. The proposed analytical decision-making model will assist allied health faculty in assessing students\u27 needs and providing reasonable accommodations. This, in turn, will enable allied health faculty to support SWD to meet essential components while upholding academic integrity and meeting the requirements of the law

Decreasing Health Disparities for People with Disabilities through Improved Communication Strategies and Awareness

Factors influencing access to health care among people with disabilities (PWD) include: attitudes of health care providers and the public, physical barriers, miscommunication, income level, ethnic/minority status, insurance coverage, and lack of information tailored to PWD. Reducing health care disparities in a population with complex needs requires implementation at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels. This review article discusses common barriers to health care access from the patient and provider perspective, particularly focusing on communication barriers and how to address and ameliorate them. Articles utilized in this review were published from 2005 to present in MEDLINE and CINAHL and written in English that focused on people with disabilities. Topics searched for in the literature include: disparities and health outcomes, health care dissatisfaction, patient-provider communication and access issues. Ineffective communication has significant impacts for PWD. They frequently believe that providers are not interested in, or sensitive to their particular needs and are less likely to seek care or to follow up with recommendations. Various strategies for successful improvement of health outcomes for PWD were identified including changing the way health care professionals are educated regarding disabilities, improving access to health care services, and enhancing the capacity for patient centered care

SOME OBSERVATIONS ON THE USE OF FEED ADDITIVES IN CANADIAN ANIMAL PRODUCTION

Antibiotics have been used in animal feeds for almost 30 yr to improve growth, enhance feed efficiency, and control disease in birds and animals. In 1974 antibiotics used in animal feeds in Canada totalled 13.31 million dollars while those used in veterinary medicine totalled 28.8 million dollars. Antibiotics, sulfonamides and antibacterials used in human application that same year equalled 77.4 million dollars. Concerns regarding potential health hazards to humans with continued low-level antibiotic supplementation of animal feeds have resulted in a number of countries implementing or proposing more rigid legislation covering antibiotic use in animal agriculture. Possible consequences of such legislation being introduced in Canada are discussed. </jats:p
