Room-temperature high-speed nuclear-spin quantum memory in diamond
Quantum memories provide intermediate storage of quantum information until it
is needed for the next step of a quantum algorithm or a quantum communication
process. Relevant figures of merit are therefore the fidelity with which the
information can be written and retrieved, the storage time, and also the speed
of the read-write process. Here, we present experimental data on a quantum
memory consisting of a single C nuclear spin that is strongly coupled to
the electron spin of a nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond. The strong
hyperfine interaction of the nearest-neighbor carbon results in transfer times
of 300 ns between the register qubit and the memory qubit, with an overall
fidelity of 88 % for the write - storage - read cycle. The observed storage
times of 3.3 ms appear to be limited by the T relaxation of the electron
spin. We discuss a possible scheme that may extend the storage time beyond this

Electronic structures of antiperovskite superconductors: MgXNi (X=B,C,N)
We have investigated electronic structures of a newly discovered
antiperovskite superconductor MgCNi and related compounds MgBNi and
MgNNi. In MgCNi, a peak of very narrow and high density of states is
located just below , which corresponds to the antibonding
state of Ni-3d and C- but with the predominant Ni-3d character. The
prominent nesting feature is observed in the -centered electron Fermi
surface of an octahedron-cage-like shape that originates from the 19th band.
The estimated superconducting parameters based on the simple rigid-ion
approximation are in reasonable agreement with experiment, suggesting that the
superconductivity in MgCNi is described well by the conventional phonon

Electronic structure of a newly discovered antiperovskite superconductor
MgCNi is investigated by using the LMTO band method. The main contribution
to the density of states (DOS) at the Fermi energy comes from Ni
3 states which are hybridized with C 2 states. The DOS at is
varied substantially by the hole or electron doping due to the very high and
narrow DOS peak located just below . We have also explored
electronic structures of C-site and Mg-site doped MgCNi systems, and

Fragility, Stokes-Einstein violation, and correlated local excitations in a coarse-grained model of an ionic liquid
Dynamics of a coarse-grained model for the room-temperature ionic liquid,
1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, couched in the united-atom
site representation are studied via molecular dynamics simulations. The
dynamically heterogeneous behavior of the model resembles that of fragile
supercooled liquids. At or close to room temperature, the model ionic liquid
exhibits slow dynamics, characterized by nonexponential structural relaxation
and subdiffusive behavior. The structural relaxation time, closely related to
the viscosity, shows a super-Arrhenius behavior. Local excitations, defined as
displacement of an ion exceeding a threshold distance, are found to be mainly
responsible for structural relaxation in the alternating structure of cations
and anions. As the temperature is lowered, excitations become progressively
more correlated. This results in the decoupling of exchange and persistence
times, reflecting a violation of the Stokes-Einstein relation.Comment: Published on the Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. websit
Microfog lubricant application system for advanced turbine engine components, phase 2. Tasks 3, 4 and 5: Wettability and heat transfer of microfog jets impinging on a heated rotating disc, and evaluation of reclassifying nozzles and a vortex mist generator
The wettabilities and heat transfer rates of microfog jets (oil-mist nozzle flows) impinging on a heated rotating disc were determined under an inert atmosphere of nitrogen at temperatures ranging from 600 to 800 F. The results are discussed in relation to the various factors involved in the microfog lubricant application systems. Two novel reclassifying nozzles and a vortex mist generator were also studied
Pvr expression regulators in equilibrium signal control and maintenance of Drosophila blood progenitors.
Blood progenitors within the lymph gland, a larval organ that supports hematopoiesis in Drosophila melanogaster, are maintained by integrating signals emanating from niche-like cells and those from differentiating blood cells. We term the signal from differentiating cells the 'equilibrium signal' in order to distinguish it from the 'niche signal'. Earlier we showed that equilibrium signaling utilizes Pvr (the Drosophila PDGF/VEGF receptor), STAT92E, and adenosine deaminase-related growth factor A (ADGF-A) (Mondal et al., 2011). Little is known about how this signal initiates during hematopoietic development. To identify new genes involved in lymph gland blood progenitor maintenance, particularly those involved in equilibrium signaling, we performed a genetic screen that identified bip1 (bric à brac interacting protein 1) and Nucleoporin 98 (Nup98) as additional regulators of the equilibrium signal. We show that the products of these genes along with the Bip1-interacting protein RpS8 (Ribosomal protein S8) are required for the proper expression of Pvr
