A long trail behind the planetary nebula HFG1 (PK 136+05) and its precataclysmic binary central star V664 Cas
A deep wide-field image in the light of the Halpha+[N II] emission lines, of
the planetary nebula HFG1 which surrounds the precataclysmic binary system V664
Cas, has revealed a tail of emission at least 20' long, at a position angle of
316deg. Evidence is presented which suggests that this is an ~10^5 y old trail
of shocked material, left behind V664 Cas as it ejects matter whilst ploughing
through its local interstellar media at anywhere between 29 and 59 km/s

Investigation of the new cataclysmic variable 1RXS J180834.7+101041
We present the results of our photometric and spectroscopic studies of the
new eclipsing cataclysmic variable star 1RXS J180834.7+101041. Its spectrum
exhibits double-peaked hydrogen and helium emission lines. The Doppler maps
constructed from hydrogen lines show a nonuniform distribution of emission in
the disk similar to that observed in IP Peg. This suggests that the object can
be a cataclysmic variable with tidal density waves in the disk. We have
determined the component masses (M_WD =0.8 \pm 0.22 M_sun and M_RD =0.14 \pm
0.02 M_sun) and the binary inclination (i =78 \pm 1.5 deg) based on well-known
relations between parameters for cataclysmic variable stars. We have modeled
the binary light curves and showed that the model of a disk with two spots is

Abell 41: shaping of a planetary nebula by a binary central star?
We present the first detailed spatio-kinematical analysis and modelling of
the planetary nebula Abell 41, which is known to contain the well-studied
close-binary system MT Ser. This object represents an important test case in
the study of the evolution of planetary nebulae with binary central stars as
current evolutionary theories predict that the binary plane should be aligned
perpendicular to the symmetry axis of the nebula.
Deep narrowband imaging in the light of [NII], [OIII] and [SII], obtained
using ACAM on the William Herschel Telescope, has been used to investigate the
ionisation structure of Abell 41. Longslit observations of the H-alpha and
[NII] emission were obtained using the Manchester Echelle Spectrometer on the
2.1-m San Pedro M\'artir Telescope. These spectra, combined with the narrowband
imagery, were used to develop a spatio-kinematical model of [NII] emission from
Abell 41. The best fitting model reveals Abell 41 to have a waisted, bipolar
structure with an expansion velocity of ~40km\s at the waist. The symmetry axis
of the model nebula is within 5\degr of perpendicular to the orbital plane of
the central binary system. This provides strong evidence that the close-binary
system, MT Ser, has directly affected the shaping of its nebula, Abell 41.
Although the theoretical link between bipolar planetary nebulae and binary
central stars is long established, this nebula is only the second to have this
link, between nebular symmetry axis and binary plane, proved observationally.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRA
The Mass of the Compact Object in the X-Ray Binary Her X-1/HZ Her
We have obtained the first estimates of the masses of the components of the
Her X-1/HZ Her X-ray binary system taking into account non-LTE effects in the
formation of the H_gamma absorption line: mx=1.8Msun and mv=2.5Msun. These mass
estimates were made in a Roche model based on the observed radial-velocity
curve of the optical star, HZ Her. The masses for the X-ray pulsar and optical
star obtained for an LTE model lie are mx=0.85\pm0.15Msun and
mv=1.87\pm0.13Msun. These mass estimates for the components of Her X-1/HZ Her
derived from the radial-velocity curve should be considered tentative. Further
mass estimates from high-precision observations of the orbital variability of
the absorption profiles in a non-LTE model for the atmosphere of the optical

Parameters of UX CVn
We have derived a complete set of parameters for the close binary system UX CVn made up of degenerate objects based on photometric and spectral observations. The total mass of the components is close to one solar mass, so that its further evolution cannot result in a type-I supernova. The spectrum of the binary indicates that the surface temperature of the hot subdwarf may have increased by 2000 K over 40 years. This heating rate is consistent with theoretical estimates for evolutionary tracks of low-luminosity hot subdwarfs. We also determined the abundances for ten elements in the atmosphere of the primary, which are consistent with the hypothesis that the binary is a member of Population II. There are signs of synthesized material ejected onto the surface of the star. © 2002 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica"
Azimuthal anisotropy of K0s and Lambda prduction at mid-rapidity from Au+Au collisions at root s = 130 GeV
We report STAR results on the azimuthal anisotropy parameter v2 for strange
particles K0S, L and Lbar at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at sNN = 130 GeV
at RHIC. The value of v2 as a function of transverse momentum of the produced
particles pt and collision centrality is presented for both particles up to pt
3.0 GeV/c. A strong pt dependence in v2 is observed up to 2.0 GeV/c. The v2
measurement is compared with hydrodynamic model calculations. The physics
implications of the pt integrated v2 magnitude as a function of particle mass

Evidence from d+Au measurements for final-state suppression of high hadrons in Au+Au collisions at RHIC
We report measurements of single-particle inclusive spectra and two-particle
azimuthal distributions of charged hadrons at high transverse momentum (high
) in minimum bias and central d+Au collisions at =200 GeV.
The inclusive yield is enhanced in d+Au collisions relative to binary-scaled
p+p collisions, while the two-particle azimuthal distributions are very similar
to those observed in p+p collisions. These results demonstrate that the strong
suppression of the inclusive yield and back-to-back correlations at high
previously observed in central Au+Au collisions are due to final-state

Rapidity and Centrality Dependence of Proton and Anti-proton Production from Au+Au Collisions at sqrt(sNN) = 130GeV
We report on the rapidity and centrality dependence of proton and anti-proton
transverse mass distributions from Au+Au collisions at sqrt(sNN) = 130GeV as
measured by the STAR experiment at RHIC. Our results are from the rapidity and
transverse momentum range of |y|<0.5 and 0.35 <p_t<1.00GeV/c. For both protons
and anti-protons, transverse mass distributions become more convex from
peripheral to central collisions demonstrating characteristics of collective
expansion. The measured rapidity distributions and the mean transverse momenta
versus rapidity are flat within |y|<0.5. Comparisons of our data with results
from model calculations indicate that in order to obtain a consistent picture
of the proton(anti-proton) yields and transverse mass distributions the
possibility of pre-hadronic collective expansion may have to be taken into

Pion-Xi correlations in Au-Au collisions at STAR
We present pion-Xi correlation analysis in Au-Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=
200 GeV and sqrt(s_NN) = 62.4 GeV, performed using the STAR detector at RHIC. A
Xi*(1530) resonance signal is observed for the first time in Au-Au collisions.
Experimental data are compared with theoretical predictions. The strength of
the Xi* peak is reproduced in the correlation function assuming that pions and

Particle-type dependence of azimuthal anisotropy and nuclear modification of particle production in Au+Au collisions at s(NN)**(1/2) = 200-GeV
We present STAR measurements of the azimuthal anisotropy parameter and
the binary-collision scaled centrality ratio for kaons and lambdas
() at mid-rapidity in Au+Au collisions at
GeV. In combination, the and
particle-type dependencies contradict expectations from partonic energy loss
followed by standard fragmentation in vacuum. We establish
GeV/c as the value where the centrality dependent baryon enhancement ends. The
and values are consistent with
expectations of constituent-quark-number scaling from models of hadron
