The developmental state, speculative urbanisation and the politics of displacement in gentrifying Seoul
What does gentrification mean under speculative urbanisation led by a strong developmental state? This paper analyses the contemporary history of Seoul’s urban redevelopment, arguing that new-build gentrification is an endogenous process embedded in Korea’s highly speculative urban development processes from the 1980s. Property owners, construction firms and local/central governments coalesce, facilitating the extraction of exchange value by closing the rent gap. Displacement of poorer owner-occupiers and tenants was requisite for the success of speculative accumulation. Furthermore, the paper also contends that Korea’s speculative urbanisation under the strong developmental (and later (neo-)liberalising) state has rendered popular resistance to displacement ineffective despite its initial success in securing state concessions. Examining the experience of Seoul in times of condensed industrialisation and speculative urbanisation helps inform the existing literature on gentrification by resorting to non-Western empirics

Gentrifying the Peri-urban: Land use Conflicts and institutional dynamics at the Frontier of an Indonesian Metropolis
This paper aims to specify the meaning of gentrification in rapidly peri-urbanising metropolitan regions in the context of Indonesia’s rapid transition to decentralisation and democracy. It discusses a case study of conflict over an environmental revitalisation project in a peri-urban area of Bandung City. The analysis focuses on the political processes, tactics and strategies supporting and opposing peri-urban gentrification and their consequences. The analysis illustrates how these political dynamics mediate the interaction between the movement of capital and the spatial reorganisation of social classes. It is argued that in the context of a peri-urbanising metropolis, gentrification needs to be narrated less in terms of class-based neighbourhood succession and more in terms of competing cross-class coalitions emerging at local and regional levels

Assessing L2 vocabulary depth with word associates format tests: issues, findings, and suggestions
Word Associates Format (WAF) tests are often used to measure second language learners’ vocabulary depth with a focus on their network knowledge. Yet, there were often many variations in the specific forms of the tests and the ways they were used, which tended to have an impact on learners’ response behaviors and, more importantly, the psychometric properties of the tests. This paper reviews the general practices, key issues, and research findings that pertain to WAF tests in four major areas, including the design features of WAF tests, conditions for test administration, scoring methods, and test-taker characteristics. In each area, a set of variables is identified and described with relevant research findings also presented and discussed. Around eight topics, the General Discussion section provides some suggestions and directions for the development of WAF tests and the use of them as research tools in the future. This paper is hoped to help researchers become better aware that the results generated by a WAF test may vary depending on what specific design the test has, how it is administered and scored, and who the learners are, and consequently, make better decisions in their research that involves a WAF test
Drug Repurposing: A Systematic Approach to Evaluate Candidate Oral Neuroprotective Interventions for Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis
Objective: To develop and implement an evidence based framework to select, from drugs already licenced, candidate oral neuroprotective drugs to be tested in secondary progressive multiple sclerosis. Design: Systematic review of clinical studies of oral putative neuroprotective therapies in MS and four other neurodegenerative diseases with shared pathological features, followed by systematic review and meta-analyses of the in vivo experimental data for those interventions. We presented summary data to an international multi-disciplinary committee, which assessed each drug in turn using pre-specified criteria including consideration of mechanism of action. Results: We identified a short list of fifty-two candidate interventions. After review of all clinical and pre-clinical evidence we identified ibudilast, riluzole, amiloride, pirfenidone, fluoxetine, oxcarbazepine, and the polyunsaturated fatty-acid class (Linoleic Acid, Lipoic acid; Omega-3 fatty acid, Max EPA oil) as lead candidates for clinical evaluation. Conclusions: We demonstrate a standardised and systematic approach to candidate identification for drug rescue and repurposing trials that can be applied widely to neurodegenerative disorders
Community assessment to advance computational prediction of cancer drug combinations in a pharmacogenomic screen
The effectiveness of most cancer targeted therapies is short-lived. Tumors often develop resistance that might be overcome with drug combinations. However, the number of possible combinations is vast, necessitating data-driven approaches to find optimal patient-specific treatments. Here we report AstraZeneca's large drug combination dataset, consisting of 11,576 experiments from 910 combinations across 85 molecularly characterized cancer cell lines, and results of a DREAM Challenge to evaluate computational strategies for predicting synergistic drug pairs and biomarkers. 160 teams participated to provide a comprehensive methodological development and benchmarking. Winning methods incorporate prior knowledge of drug-target interactions. Synergy is predicted with an accuracy matching biological replicates for >60% of combinations. However, 20% of drug combinations are poorly predicted by all methods. Genomic rationale for synergy predictions are identified, including ADAM17 inhibitor antagonism when combined with PIK3CB/D inhibition contrasting to synergy when combined with other PI3K-pathway inhibitors in PIK3CA mutant cells
Temporal change in the diagnosis and treatment rates of osteoporosis: results from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey
Summary: To compare the diagnosis andtreatment rates of osteoporosis and diabetes in Korea, a nationwide database was used. The results showed that although osteoporosis management is improving, it is still lower compared with that of diabetes; thus, further efforts are needed in this regard. Introduction: This study aimed to re-evaluate the diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis from the KNHANES 2016–2017 and compare the temporal change of the rate with those of diabetes as another prevalent chronic disease in South Korea. Methods: The prevalence of osteoporosis in 2016 was estimated using the previous data classified by age groups (50–59,60–69, and ≥70years) and the 2016 Korean census data. The physician diagnosis and treatment rates of osteoporosis in adults aged ≥50years were estimated using the 2016–2017 KNHANES data. The physician diagnosis and treatment rates of diabetes were evaluated using the KNHANES 2008–2009 and 2016–2017 data. Results: The estimated physician diagnosisrate of osteoporosis increased from 29.9% in females and 5.8% in males in 2008–2009 to 62.8% in females and 22.8% in males in 2016–2017. The treatment rate for the estimated total number of patients with osteoporosis increased from 14.4% in females and 3.8% in males in 2008–2009 to 32.2% in females and 9.0% in males in 2016–2017. An increasing trend in the estimated treatment rateof physician-diagnosed osteoporosis patients was not observed (48.3% [2008–2009] vs 51.5% [2016–2017] in females; 42.6% [2008–2009] vs 42.2% [2016–2017] in males). The physician diagnosis and treatment rates of diabetes were considerably better and more stable than those of osteoporosis. Conclusion: Osteoporosis management in South Korea is improving but is insufficient compared with diabetes management. More extensive efforts are needed to improve the diagnosis and treatment rates of osteoporosis
