    Arte mural tradicional en Walata: ciudad caravana en el Hawdh oriental

    Walata is one of the major caravan cities in the southern Sahara located on the route from Timbuktu to the northern cities of either Sijilmassa in the Tafilalt oasis or Nul Lamta on Wadi Nun. The city has a long history stretching back to before it was named Walata which archeology has only recently (2004) begun to investigate. The city is justly famous for the unique wall art on its houses. The art is the realm of women who have passed it on from generation to generation. Local oral history states the wall art found in Walata dates to al-Murabitin period (11th century) when a number of Muslims from al-Andalus were exiled there. The wall art of Walata is unique not only to its own region of the Hawdh in eastern Mauritania, but to the whole Sahara. The art can be divided into three main types: around the main street entrance to the house, walls of the interior courtyard, and the inside of rooms. The designs are subject to change over time and recently new ones have been introduced from henna for the hands, straw mats, and Moroccan carpets while some of the older designs are no longer being done.Walata es una de las mayores ciudades caravana en el Sahara septentrional emplazada en el camino desde Timbuktu a las ciudades norteñas de Sijilmassa en el oasis de Tafilalt o a Nul Lamta en Wadi Nun. La ciudad tiene una larga historia que se remonta a antes de que fuera llamada Walata, que la arqueología ha empezado a investigar recientemente (2004). La ciudad es en concreto famosa por el singular arte mural de sus casas. Este arte se da en la esfera de las mujeres, que lo conservan de generación en generación. La tradición oral local establece que el arte mural que se encuentra en Walata data del periodo al-Murabitin (siglo XI), durante el que unos cuantos musulmanes de alÁndalus se exiliaron en la zona. El arte mural de Walata es único no sólo en la región de Hawdh, en Mauritania oriental, sino también en el Sahara en su totalidad. Este arte puede dividirse en tres tipos principales: en las entradas de las casas alrededor de la calle principal. en los muros del patio interior, y en el interior de las habitaciones. Los diseños pueden cambiar a lo largo del tiempo y recientemente se han introducido nuevos inspirados en la henna de las manos, en las esteras de paja, y en las alfombras marroquíes, mientras que algunos de los más antiguos ya no se hacen

    Efficiency of initiating cell adhesion in hydrodynamic flow

    We theoretically investigate the efficiency of initial binding between a receptor-coated sphere and a ligand-coated wall in linear shear flow. The mean first passage time for binding decreases monotonically with increasing shear rate. Above a saturation threshold of the order of a few 100 receptor patches, the binding efficiency is enhanced only weakly by increasing their number and size, but strongly by increasing their height. This explains why white blood cells in the blood flow adhere through receptor patches localized to the tips of microvilli, and why malaria-infected red blood cells form elevated receptor patches (knobs).Comment: 4 pages, Revtex, 4 Postscript figures included, to appear in PR

    On sets of irreducible polynomials closed by composition

    Let S\mathcal S be a set of monic degree 22 polynomials over a finite field and let CC be the compositional semigroup generated by S\mathcal S. In this paper we establish a necessary and sufficient condition for CC to be consisting entirely of irreducible polynomials. The condition we deduce depends on the finite data encoded in a certain graph uniquely determined by the generating set S\mathcal S. Using this machinery we are able both to show examples of semigroups of irreducible polynomials generated by two degree 22 polynomials and to give some non-existence results for some of these sets in infinitely many prime fields satisfying certain arithmetic conditions

    An efficient quantum algorithm for the hidden subgroup problem in extraspecial groups

    Extraspecial groups form a remarkable subclass of p-groups. They are also present in quantum information theory, in particular in quantum error correction. We give here a polynomial time quantum algorithm for finding hidden subgroups in extraspecial groups. Our approach is quite different from the recent algorithms presented in [17] and [2] for the Heisenberg group, the extraspecial p-group of size p3 and exponent p. Exploiting certain nice automorphisms of the extraspecial groups we define specific group actions which are used to reduce the problem to hidden subgroup instances in abelian groups that can be dealt with directly.Comment: 10 page

    The Study of TeV Variability and Duty Cycle of Mrk 421 from 3 Years of Observations with the Milagro Observatory

    TeV flaring activity with time scales as short as tens of minutes and an orphan TeV flare have been observed from the blazar Markarian 421 (Mrk 421). The TeV emission from Mrk 421 is believed to be produced by leptonic synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) emission. In this scenario, correlations between the X-ray and the TeV fluxes are expected, TeV orphan flares are hardly explained and the activity (measured as duty cycle) of the source at TeV energies is expected to be equal or less than that observed in X-rays if only SSC is considered. To estimate the TeV duty cycle of Mrk 421 and to establish limits on its variability at different time scales, we continuously observed Mrk 421 with the Milagro observatory. Mrk 421 was detected by Milagro with a statistical significance of 7.1 standard deviations between 2005 September 21 and 2008 March 15. The observed spectrum is consistent with previous observations by VERITAS. We estimate the duty cycle of Mrk 421 for energies above 1 TeV for different hypothesis of the baseline flux and for different flare selections and we compare our results with the X-ray duty cycle estimated by Resconi et al. 2009.     Self-consistent theory of reversible ligand binding to a spherical cell

    In this article, we study the kinetics of reversible ligand binding to receptors on a spherical cell surface using a self-consistent stochastic theory. Binding, dissociation, diffusion and rebinding of ligands are incorporated into the theory in a systematic manner. We derive explicitly the time evolution of the ligand-bound receptor fraction p(t) in various regimes . Contrary to the commonly accepted view, we find that the well-known Berg-Purcell scaling for the association rate is modified as a function of time. Specifically, the effective on-rate changes non-monotonically as a function of time and equals the intrinsic rate at very early as well as late times, while being approximately equal to the Berg-Purcell value at intermediate times. The effective dissociation rate, as it appears in the binding curve or measured in a dissociation experiment, is strongly modified by rebinding events and assumes the Berg-Purcell value except at very late times, where the decay is algebraic and not exponential. In equilibrium, the ligand concentration everywhere in the solution is the same and equals its spatial mean, thus ensuring that there is no depletion in the vicinity of the cell. Implications of our results for binding experiments and numerical simulations of ligand-receptor systems are also discussed.Comment: 23 pages with 4 figure

    Results from the Milagrito experiment

    The Milagro water Cherenkov detector near Los Alamos, New Mexico is the first air shower detector capable of continuously monitoring the sky at energies between 500 GeV and 20 TeV. Preliminary results of the Milagro experiment are presented. A predecessor of the Milagro detector, Milagrito, was operational from February 1997 to May 1998. Milagrito consisted of 228 8″ photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) arranged in a grid with a 2.8 meter spacing and submerged in 1–2 meters of water. During its operation, Milagrito collected in excess of 9 billion events with a median energy of about 3 TeV. The detector’s sensitivity extends below 1 TeV for showers from near zenith. The results of an all sky search for the Milagrito data for both transient and DC sources will be presented, including the Crab Nebula and active galaxies Markarian 501 and 421, which are known sources of TeV gamma-rays. Also presented will be a study of the TeV emission from gamma ray bursts (GRBs) in Milagrito’s field of view detected by the BATSE experiment on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory

    Discovery of Localized Regions of Excess 10-TeV Cosmic Rays

    An analysis of 7 years of Milagro data performed on a 10-degree angular scale has found two localized regions of excess of unknown origin with greater than 12 sigma significance. Both regions are inconsistent with gamma-ray emission with high confidence. One of the regions has a different energy spectrum than the isotropic cosmic-ray flux at a level of 4.6 sigma, and it is consistent with hard spectrum protons with an exponential cutoff, with the most significant excess at ~10 TeV. Potential causes of these excesses are explored, but no compelling explanations are found.Comment: Submitted to PhysRevLet

    First results of a study of TeV emission from GRBs in Milagrito

    Milagrito, a detector sensitive to γ-rays at TeV energies, monitored the northern sky during the period February 1997 through May 1998. With a large field of view and high duty cycle, this instrument was used to perform a search for TeV counterparts to γ-ray bursts. Within the Milagrito field of view 54 γ-ray bursts at keV energies were observed by the Burst And Transient Satellite Experiment (BATSE) aboard the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory. This paper describes the results of a preliminary analysis to search for TeV emission correlated with BATSE detected bursts. Milagrito detected an excess of events coincident both spatially and temporally with GRB 970417a, with chance probability 2.8×10−5 within the BATSE error radius. No other significant correlations were detected. Since 54 bursts were examined the chance probability of observing an excess with this significance in any of these bursts is 1.5×10−3. The statistical aspects and physical implications of this result are discussed

    Detection of 6 November 1997 ground level event by Milagrito

    Solar Energetic Particles (SEPs) with energies exceeding 10 GeV associated with the 6 November 1997 solar flare/CME (coronal mass ejection) have been detected with Milagrito, a prototype of the Milagro Gamma Ray Observatory. While SEP acceleration beyond 1 GeV is well established, few data exist for protons or ions beyond 10 GeV. The Milagro observatory, a ground based water Cherenkov detector designed for observing very high energy gamma ray sources, can also be used to study the Sun. Milagrito, which operated for approximately one year in 1997/98, was sensitive to solar proton and neutron fluxes above ∼4 GeV. In its scaler mode, Milagrito registered a rate increase coincident with the 6 November 1997 ground level event observed by Climax and other neutron monitors. A preliminary analysis suggests the presence of \u3e10 GeV particles
