Effective interaction between active colloids and fluid interfaces induced by Marangoni flows
We show theoretically that near a fluid-fluid interface a single active
colloidal particle generating, e.g., chemicals or a temperature gradient
experiences an effective force of hydrodynamic origin. This force is due to the
fluid flow driven by Marangoni stresses induced by the activity of the
particle; it decays very slowly with the distance from the interface, and can
be attractive or repulsive depending on how the activity modifies the surface
tension. We show that, for typical systems, this interaction can dominate the
dynamics of the particle as compared to Brownian motion, dispersion forces, or
self-phoretic effects. In the attractive case, the interaction promotes the
self-assembly of particles into a crystal-like monolayer at the interface.Comment: The manuscript proper and the supplementary information have been

Does South Africa need a national clinical trials support unit?

No national South African institution provides a coherent suite of support, available skills and training for clinicians wishing to conduct randomised controlled trials (RCTs) in the public sector. We report on a study to assess the need for establishing a national South African Clinical Trials Support Unit. Objectives. To determine the need for additional training and support for conduct of RCTs within South African institutions; identify challenges facing institutions conducting RCTs; and provide recommendations for enhancing trial conduct within South African public institutions. Design. Key informant interviews of senior decision-makers at institutions with a stake in the South African public sector clinical trials research environment. Results. Trial conduct in South Africa faces many challenges, including lack of dedicated funding, the burden on clinical load, and lengthy approval processes. Strengths include the high burden of disease and the prevalence of treatmentnaïve patients. Participants expressed a significant need for a national initiative to support and enhance the conduct of public sector RCTs. Research methods training and statistical support were viewed as key. There was a broad range of views regarding the structure and focus of such an initiative, but there was agreement that the national government should provide specific funding for this purpose. Conclusions. Stakeholders generally support the establishment of a national clinical trials support initiative. Consideration must be given to the sustainability of such an initiative, in terms of funding, staffing, expected research outputs and permanence of location.Publishers' versio
The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is under control: an orchestrated flip of the chiral link between structure and magnetism for FeCoSi
Monosilicides of 3d-metals frequently show a chiral magnetic ordering with
the absolute configuration defined by the chirality of the crystal structure
and the sign of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Structural and
magnetic chiralities are probed here for FeCoSi series and their
mutual relationship is found to be dependent on the chemical composition. The
chirality of crystal structure was previously shown to be governed by crystal
growth, and the value of the DMI is nearly the same for all monosilicides of
Fe, Co and Mn. Our findings indicate that the sign of the DMI in
FeCoSi is controlled by the Co composition , thus, opening a

Endothelial preconditioning by transient oxidative stress reduces inflammatory responses of cultured endothelial cells to TNF-α
Brief episodes of ischemia can render an organ resistant to subsequent severe ischemia. This ‘ischemic preconditioning’ is ascribed to various mechanisms, including oxidative stress. We investigated whether preconditioning exists on an endothelial level. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were transiently confronted with oxidative stress (1 mM H2O2, 5 min). Adhesion molecules ICAM-1 and E-selectin and release of cytokines IL-6 and IL-8 to subsequent stimulation with TNF-α (2.5 ng/ml, 4 h) were measured (flow cytometry and immunoassay), as were nuclear translocation of the transcription factor NFkB (Western blotting, confocal microscopy) and redox status of HUVECs (quantification of glutathione by HPLC). TNF-α elevated IL-6 in the cell supernatant from 8.8 ± 1 to 41 ± 3 pg/ml and IL-8 from 0.5 ± 0.03 to 3 ± 0.2 ng/ml. ICAM-1 was increased threefold and E-selectin rose eightfold. Oxidative stress (decrease of glutathione by 50%) reduced post-TNF-α levels of IL-6 to 14 ± 3 and IL-8 to 1 ± 0.2; the rise of ICAM-1 was completely blocked and E-selectin was only doubled. The anti-inflammatory effects of preconditioning via oxidative stress were paralleled by reduction of the translocation of NFkB on stimulation with TNF-α, and antagonized by the intracellular radical scavenger N-acetylcysteine. ‘Anti-inflammatory preconditioning’ of endothelial cells by oxidative stress may account for the inhibitory effects of preconditioning on leukocyte adhesion in vivo
Unlocking biomarker discovery: Large scale application of aptamer proteomic technology for early detection of lung cancer
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths, because ~84% of cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage. Worldwide in 2008, ~1.5 million people were diagnosed and ~1.3 million died – a survival rate unchanged since 1960. However, patients diagnosed at an early stage and have surgery experience an 86% overall 5-year survival. New diagnostics are therefore needed to identify lung cancer at this stage. Here we present the first large scale clinical use of aptamers to discover blood protein biomarkers in disease with our breakthrough proteomic technology. This multi-center case-control study was conducted in archived samples from 1,326 subjects from four independent studies of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in long-term tobacco-exposed populations. We measured >800 proteins in 15uL of serum, identified 44 candidate biomarkers, and developed a 12-protein panel that distinguished NSCLC from controls with 91% sensitivity and 84% specificity in a training set and 89% sensitivity and 83% specificity in a blinded, independent verification set. Performance was similar for early and late stage NSCLC. This is a significant advance in proteomics in an area of high clinical need
Condensation of Excitons in Cu2O at Ultracold Temperatures: Experiment and Theory
We present experiments on the luminescence of excitons confined in a
potential trap at milli-Kelvin bath temperatures under cw-excitation. They
reveal several distinct features like a kink in the dependence of the total
integrated luminescence intensity on excitation laser power and a bimodal
distribution of the spatially resolved luminescence. Furthermore, we discuss
the present state of the theoretical description of Bose-Einstein condensation
of excitons with respect to signatures of a condensate in the luminescence. The
comparison of the experimental data with theoretical results with respect to
the spatially resolved as well as the integrated luminescence intensity shows
the necessity of taking into account a Bose-Einstein condensed excitonic phase
in order to understand the behaviour of the trapped excitons.Comment: 41 pages, 23 figure
Variational bound on energy dissipation in turbulent shear flow
We present numerical solutions to the extended Doering-Constantin variational
principle for upper bounds on the energy dissipation rate in plane Couette
flow, bridging the entire range from low to asymptotically high Reynolds
numbers. Our variational bound exhibits structure, namely a pronounced minimum
at intermediate Reynolds numbers, and recovers the Busse bound in the
asymptotic regime. The most notable feature is a bifurcation of the minimizing
wavenumbers, giving rise to simple scaling of the optimized variational
