Carbon ionization at Gbar pressures: an ab initio perspective on astrophysical high-density plasmas
A realistic description of partially-ionized matter in extreme thermodynamic
states is critical to model the interior and evolution of the multiplicity of
high-density astrophysical objects. Current predictions of its essential
property, the ionization degree, rely widely on analytical approximations that
have been challenged recently by a series of experiments. Here, we propose a
novel ab initio approach to calculate the ionization degree directly from the
dynamic electrical conductivity using the Thomas-Reiche-Kuhn sum rule. This
Density Functional Theory framework captures genuinely the condensed matter
nature and quantum effects typical for strongly-correlated plasmas. We
demonstrate this new capability for carbon and hydrocarbon, which most notably
serve as ablator materials in inertial confinement fusion experiments aiming at
recreating stellar conditions. We find a significantly higher carbon ionization
degree than predicted by commonly used models, yet validating the qualitative
behavior of the average atom model Purgatorio. Additionally, we find the carbon
ionization state to remain unchanged in the environment of fully-ionized
hydrogen. Our results will not only serve as benchmark for traditional models,
but more importantly provide an experimentally accessible quantity in the form
of the electrical conductivity.Comment: accepted for publication in Physical Review Researc
Switchable protection and exposure of a sensitive squaraine dye within a redox active rotaxane
In nature, molecular environments in proteins can sterically protect and stabilize reactive species such as organic radicals through non-covalent interactions. Here, we report a near-infrared fluorescent rotaxane in which the stabilization of a chemically labile squaraine fluorophore by the coordination of a tetralactam macrocycle can be controlled chemically and electrochemically. The rotaxane can be switched between two co-conformations in which the wheel either stabilizes or exposes the fluorophore. Coordination by the wheel affects the squaraine’s stability across four redox states and renders the radical anion significantly more stable—by a factor of 6.7—than without protection by a mechanically bonded wheel. Furthermore, the fluorescence properties can be tuned by the redox reactions in a stepwise manner. Mechanically interlocked molecules provide an excellent scaffold to stabilize and selectively expose reactive species in a co-conformational switching process controlled by external stimuli
Crop rotations with and without legumes: a review
In organic farming, legumes are indispensable for the nitrogen supply of arable crops and the protein supply of livestock due to their ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen. In conventional farming, legumes offer the potential to break the often cereal-intensive crop rotations. One of the most important consequences of the break-crop effect is the interruption of the life cycle of crop-specific pathogens and the associated savings of pesticides. This review summarizes the current state of knowledge on crop rotations with and without legumes. It presents and evaluates the agronomic, ecological and economic effects of the cultivation of large- and small-seeded legume species as main or catch crops, when undersown in other crops, or used as components in mixtures. The focus is on relevant publications in scientific journals as well as practice and research reports published between 2010 and 2020 which were carried out in Germany or under comparable climatic conditions. Finally, essential research needs in the areas of crop production (conventional and organic), crop protection, economics, ecology, and climate protection are identified
The Speed of Sound in Methane under Conditions of the Thermal Boundary Layer of Uranus
We present the first direct observations of acoustic waves in warm dense
matter. We analyze wavenumber- and energy-resolved X-ray spectra taken from
warm dense methane created by laser-heating a cryogenic liquid jet. X-ray
diffraction and inelastic free electron scattering yield sample conditions of
0.30.1 eV and 0.80.1 g/cm, corresponding to a pressure of
13 GPa and matching the conditions predicted in the thermal boundary
layer between the inner and outer envelope of Uranus. Inelastic X-ray
scattering was used to observe the collective oscillations of the ions. With a
highly improved energy resolution of 50 meV, we could clearly distinguish
the Brillouin peaks from the quasi-elastic Rayleigh feature. Data at different
wavenumbers were used to obtain a sound speed of 5.90.5 km/s, which
enabled us to validate the use of Birch's law in this new parameter regime.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures with supplementary informatio
Male circumcision for HIV prevention: current evidence and implementation in sub-Saharan Africa
Heterosexual exposure accounts for most HIV transmission in sub-Saharan Africa, and this mode, as a proportion of new infections, is escalating globally. The scientific evidence accumulated over more than 20 years shows that among the strategies advocated during this period for HIV prevention, male circumcision is one of, if not, the most efficacious epidemiologically, as well as cost-wise. Despite this, and recommendation of the procedure by global policy makers, national implementation has been slow. Additionally, some are not convinced of the protective effect of male circumcision and there are also reports, unsupported by evidence, that non-sex-related drivers play a major role in HIV transmission in sub-Saharan Africa. Here, we provide a critical evaluation of the state of the current evidence for male circumcision in reducing HIV infection in light of established transmission drivers, provide an update on programmes now in place in this region, and explain why policies based on established scientific evidence should be prioritized. We conclude that the evidence supports the need to accelerate the implementation of medical male circumcision programmes for HIV prevention in generalized heterosexual epidemics, as well as in countering the growing heterosexual transmission in countries where HIV prevalence is presently low

Mechanical design of a modular experiment carrier for a terrestrial analog demo mission and its potential for future space exploration
The ROBEX (Robotic Exploration under Extreme Conditions) alliance formed by the German Helmholtz Association has the aim to find and use areas of overlapping competencies between institutions involved with the exploration of deep sea and space environment. To demonstrate the developed systems and technologies two test campaigns are conducted, one for the deep sea in the area of Svalbard, Norway and one on the volcano Mt. Etna in Sicily, Italy as an Moon environment analog test ground. The objective of the volcano mission is to demonstrate seismic experiments built-up and conducted autonomously by robotic elements. It shall serve as scientific benchmark to validate concepts reproducing and extending experiments from the Apollo program and at the same time demonstrate robotic capabilities to do so without direct human interaction. The overall test infrastructure consisting of a stationary lander, a mobile element and instrument carriers has been developed within the ROBEX alliance. The modular instrument carrier, referred to as Remote Unit (RU), is deployed and positioned by a robotic system and supplies the payload, in this case the seismometer, with power, data-handling and communication. It also provides mechanical interfaces to the lander and a grapple interface for robotic handling. The RU’s primary structure is a differential carbon-fiber-reinforced-plastic (CFRP) framework with a dedicated payload and bus compartment. Two types of RUs have been developed: one basic version that complies with a mass limitation of 3 kg (RU3) and one extended version of 10 kg (RU10). While the basic version has a fixed seismometer as well as limited lifetime due to the lack of photovoltaics, the extended version is equipped with a self-levelling seismometer, photovoltaics and an inductive power/data interface for unit charging and telemetry/telecommand (TT&C). Both designs use the identical main structure to meet the envisaged modularity approach. Even though the hardware was never meant to enter the space environment, the design approach for the units was always driven by principles which could be functional under space conditions while respecting the peculiarities and the financial framework of this terrestrial demonstration. This paper presents the functionalities of the RU with a special focus on the overall configuration, structural concept as well as included mechanisms. Moreover, starting with the baseline design for the terrestrial application, it analyses the differences and derives necessary changes and modifications to further develop the system towards a usage in an actual Moon mission
