    Capital Inflow into Developing Economies: A Macroeconomic Study

    External capital inflow on a massive scale into the emerging market economies is a very significant phenomenon of recent years. Making distinctions between direct investment, real and financial, and portfolio investment and incorporating crowding in or crowding out effects we derive some results about the impact of higher inflow on output, investment and the exchange rare. A formula is suggested for estimating the cost of central bank intervention.

    The present paper analyzes the phenomenon of corruption in the context of a Public Works Department (PWD) in a developing country city and examines its tenacity in the face of anticorruption measures. Different behaviour patterns of the supervisor (official) of the PWD have been considered.     Strategic environmental policy under free trade with transboundary pollution

    We analyze the effects of trade liberalization on environmental policies in a strategic setting when there is transboundary pollution. Trade liberalization can result in a race to the bottom in environmental taxes, which makes both countries worse. This is not due to the terms of trade motive, but rather the incentive, in a strategic setting, to reduce the incidence of transboundary pollution. With command and control policies (emission quotas), countries are unable to influence foreign emissions by strategic choice of domestic policy; hence, there is no race to the bottom. However, with internationally tradable quotas, unless pollution is a pure global public bad, there is a race to the bottom in environmental policy. Under free trade, internationally nontradable quotas result in the lowest pollution level and strictly welfare- dominate taxes.     Large-scale circulation departures related to wet episodes in northeast Brazil

    Large scale circulation features are presented as related to wet spells over northeast Brazil (Nordeste) during the rainy season (March and April) of 1979. The rainy season season is devided into dry and wet periods, the FGGE and geostationary satellite data was averaged and mean and departure fields of basic variables and cloudiness were studied. Analysis of seasonal mean circulation features show: lowest sea level easterlies beneath upper level westerlies; weak meridional winds; high relative humidity over the Amazon basin and relatively dry conditions over the South Atlantic Ocean. A fluctuation was found in the large scale circulation features on time scales of a few weeks or so over Nordeste and the South Atlantic sector. Even the subtropical High SLP's have large departures during wet episodes, implying a short period oscillation in the Southern Hemisphere Hadley circulation

    A Faster Parameterized Algorithm for Treedepth

    The width measure \emph{treedepth}, also known as vertex ranking, centered coloring and elimination tree height, is a well-established notion which has recently seen a resurgence of interest. We present an algorithm which---given as input an nn-vertex graph, a tree decomposition of the graph of width ww, and an integer tt---decides Treedepth, i.e. whether the treedepth of the graph is at most tt, in time 2O(wt)n2^{O(wt)} \cdot n. If necessary, a witness structure for the treedepth can be constructed in the same running time. In conjunction with previous results we provide a simple algorithm and a fast algorithm which decide treedepth in time 22O(t)n2^{2^{O(t)}} \cdot n and 2O(t2)n2^{O(t^2)} \cdot n, respectively, which do not require a tree decomposition as part of their input. The former answers an open question posed by Ossona de Mendez and Nesetril as to whether deciding Treedepth admits an algorithm with a linear running time (for every fixed tt) that does not rely on Courcelle's Theorem or other heavy machinery. For chordal graphs we can prove a running time of 2O(tlogt)n2^{O(t \log t)}\cdot n for the same algorithm.Comment: An extended abstract was published in ICALP 2014, Track
