A multi-methodological protocol to characterize PDO olive oils
An analytical approach including Panel Test, Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (IRMS)
and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was proposed to characterize Italian “Colline
Pontine” PDO olive oils (40 samples) of two consecutive crop years. Our approach has evidenced
the high quality of these olive oils. Only 6 of 40 olive oils samples were defined as “defective” by the
official Panel Test due to the detection of negative sensory attributes. The low variability of isotopic
data monitored by IRMS confirmed that the olive oil samples all came from a limited geographical
area. NMR spectra did not evidence any chemical composition anomaly in the investigated samples.
In order to assess the influence of harvesting year over the olive oil chemical composition, the NMR
analysis was extended to other 22 olive oil samples of a third harvesting year. NMR data were
submitted to two different statistical methods, namely, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and principal
component analysis (PCA) allowing olive oils of three consecutive harvesting years to be grouped

Female genital tuberculosis remains a major health problem in developing countries and is an important cause of infertility. As symptoms,
laboratory data and physical fndings are non-specifc, its diagnosis can be diffcult. We describe a case of a 39-year-old woman
suffering from peri-umbilical pain and increased abdominal size for one year, anorexia, asthenia, weight loss, occasionally dysuria and
dyspareunia, and four months amenorrhea. Laboratory data revealed cancer antigen 125 (CA-125) level of 132.3 U/mL, erythrocyte
sedimentation rate of 42 mm/h, and gamma-globulins of 2.66 g/dL. Computer Tomography scan showed loculated ascites. It was
initially suspected a carcinomatous origin, but ascites evaluation was negative for malignant cells. Magnetic Resonance Imaging from
another hospital showed endometrial heterogeneity. Therefore, an endometrial biopsy was performed demonstrating an infammatory

Descrevemos o caso de uma doente do sexo feminino, de 39 anos, com dor peri-umbilical e aumento do volume abdominal
desde há um ano, anorexia, astenia, perda ponderal, ocasionalmente disúria e dispareunia, assim como amenorreia desde há quatro
meses. Os dados laboratoriais mostraram valores de 132,3 U/mL do marcador tumoral CA-125, 42 mm/h de velocidade de sedimentação
e 2,66 g/dL de gama-globulinas. A tomografa computadorizada mostrou ascite loculada. Inicialmente suspeitou-se de etiologia
maligna, mas o exame citológico do líquido ascítico foi negativo para células malignas. Foi efectuada ressonância magnética pélvica,
noutra instituição, que revelou heterogeneidade do endométrio. Foi então realizada biópsia endometrial que revelou um infltrado infamatório
com células gigantes de Langhans e o exame bacteriológico isolou Mycobacterium tuberculosi
A functional study of the esophagus in patients with non-cardiac chest pain and dysphagia
Background/Aims: Nutcracker esophagus and non-specific motility disorders are the main causes of non-cardiac chest pain (NCCP), with gastroesophageal reflux in 60% of cases. Achalasia and diffuse esophageal spasm are the most frequent anomalies described in patients with dysphagia. The goal of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of esophageal body and lower esophageal sphincter motor abnormalities in patients with dysphagia, NCCP, or both. Materials and Methods: This study is a retrospective analysis of 716 patients with NCCP and/or dysphagia tested between January 1994 and December 2010. 1023 functional studies were performed, 707 of which were esophageal manometries, 225 esophageal pH-meters, and 44 bilimetries. We divided the patients into three groups: group 1 was composed of patients affected with dysphagia, group 2 with NCCP and group 3 with NCCP and dysphagia. Results: Manometric anomalies were detected in 84.4% of cases (p<0.001). The most frequent esophageal motility alteration was achalasia (36%). The lower esophageal sphincter was normal in 45.9% of patients (p<0.001). In all 3 groups, 80.9%, 98.8%, and 93.8, respectively, of patients showed normal upper esophageal sphincter (p=0.005). Conclusion: Our data differs from those of other studies because they were collected from and analyzed by a single tertiary level referral center by a single examiner. This could have eliminated the variability found in different hands and different experiences. The high percentage of symptomatic patients with non-pathologic esophageal motility pattern suggests an unclear origin of the disease, with possible neuromuscular involvement. As a result, these patients may need more-detailed diagnostic studies
Ferroelectric control of the spin texture in germanium telluride
The electrical manipulation of spins in semiconductors, without magnetic
fields or auxiliary ferromagnetic materials, represents the holy grail for
spintronics. The use of Rashba effect is very attractive because the
k-dependent spin-splitting is originated by an electric field. So far only tiny
effects in two-dimensional electron gases (2DEG) have been exploited. Recently,
GeTe has been predicted to have bulk bands with giant Rashba-like splitting,
originated by the inversion symmetry breaking due to ferroelectric
polarization. In this work, we show that GeTe(111) surfaces with inwards or
outwards ferroelectric polarizations display opposite sense of circulation of
spin in bulk Rashba bands, as seen by spin and angular resolved photoemission
experiments. Our results represent the first experimental demonstration of
ferroelectric control of the spin texture in a semiconductor, a fundamental
milestone towards the exploitation of the non-volatile electrically switchable
spin texture of GeTe in spintronic devices.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figure
Recent results and perspectives on cosmology and fundamental physics from microwave surveys
Recent cosmic microwave background data in temperature and polarization have
reached high precision in estimating all the parameters that describe the
current so-called standard cosmological model. Recent results about the
integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect from cosmic microwave background anisotropies,
galaxy surveys, and their cross-correlations are presented. Looking at fine
signatures in the cosmic microwave background, such as the lack of power at low
multipoles, the primordial power spectrum and the bounds on non-Gaussianities,
complemented by galaxy surveys, we discuss inflationary physics and the
generation of primordial perturbations in the early Universe. Three important
topics in particle physics, the bounds on neutrinos masses and parameters, on
thermal axion mass and on the neutron lifetime derived from cosmological data
are reviewed, with attention to the comparison with laboratory experiment
results. Recent results from cosmic polarization rotation analyses aimed at
testing the Einstein equivalence principle are presented. Finally, we discuss
the perspectives of next radio facilities for the improvement of the analysis

Association between Mediterranean diet and hand grip strength in older adult women
BACKGROUND & AIMS:
Mediterranean Diet (MD) is an eating pattern associated with multiple healthy benefits, including the conservation of skeletal muscle. Frailty is a major geriatric syndrome characterized by low muscle strength. The Hand Grip Strength (HGS) is the most frequently used indicator of muscle functional capacity for clinical purposes. The association between the adherence to the MD and HGS in elderly has not yet fully investigated. The goal of this study was to examine the association between the adherence to the MD and HGS in a not hospitalized elderly who participated in the project PERsonalised ict Supported Services for Independent Living and Active Ageing (PERSSILAA).
METHODS:
Eighty-four elderly women were consecutively enrolled (aged 60-85 years) in this cross-sectional observational study. Anthropometric measures were evaluated. A validated 14-item questionnaire PREDIMED (PREvención con DIeta MEDiterránea) was used for the assessment of adherence to the MD. Dietary data were collected by a 7-day food records. Muscle strength was measured by HGS using a grip strength dynamometer (KERN & SOHN GmbH).
RESULTS:
The majority of participants were overweight (46.4%). An average adherence to the MD was found in 52.4% of participants, while the minority of them showed a low adherence (21.4%). HGS > cut-point of 20 kg were found in 43 subjects (51.2%). According to the adherence to MD, 39% participants with HGS values higher than cut-point presented a high adherence score compared with 14% of those with lower values of HGS (p = 0.018). The participants with HGS > cut-point presented significantly higher PREDIMED score than those with HGS < cut-point (p < 0.001). Based on ROC curves, the most sensitive and specific cut-point for the PREDIMED score to predict HGS categories was ≥8. No evident correlations were observed between HGS and age, while HGS was negatively correlated with hip circumference (r = -0.233, p = 0.033) and BMI (r = -0.219, p = 0.045), and positively correlated with PREDIMED score (r = 0.598, p < 0.001). At binomial logistic regression analysis almost all 14-items of PREDIMED questionnaire were significantly associated with HGS adjusted for BMI. At multinomial logistic regression analysis to assess the association of the three classes of adherence to the MD with the HGS, after adjusting for BMI the lowest adherence to MD was associated with the lowest Odds Ratio of HGS (p < 0.001).
CONCLUSIONS:
This study evidenced a positive association between the adherence to the MD and muscle strength in a sample of active elderly women, stratified according to the HGS > cut-point of 20 kg. Our study highlights the usefulness of the developing health services to detect and prevent age-associated decline in physical performance in elderly subjects by addressing nutritional and physical intervention
Nutrition, inflammation and liver-spleen axis
Chronic low-grade systemic inflammation represents a mechanism common to many diseases linked to atherosclerosis-related pathways. There is a growing body of evidence indicating that the combination of food quantity and quality along with genetic susceptibility are able to induce the aberrant activation of innate immune signalling, which initially contributes to chronic low-grade inflammation. Liver represents the central player to inflammatory response. Dietary/metabolic factors contribute to the pathogenesis of Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), the main causes of liver disease in the Western world. Enlargement of the spleen, central organ in regulating the inflammation-related immune response, is commonly seen in patients with of NAFLD, depicting the so called "liver-spleen axis." The aim of this review was to provide an at-a-glance overview of the possible bi-directional mechanisms linking nutrition and inflammation, particularly pinpointing the inflammatory effects stemmed by nutrition on "liver-spleen axis." In particular, the role of unhealthy diet, healthy dietary patterns, such as the Mediterranean diet style, dietary vitamins and micronutrients, such as vitamin D or Magnesium, and Glucagon-Like Peptide-1, a well-known incretin released in response to meal intake, will be discussed. The highly variability of the inflammatory response highlights the role of expert nutritionists in refining methodologies apt to assess nutritional epidemiology and to apply appropriate dietary intervention to counteract diet-induced inflammation mechanisms
Preliminary data on the relationship between circulating levels of Sirtuin 4, anthropometric and metabolic parameters in obese subjects according to growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor-1 status
Background: The main components of GH/insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1 axis and Sirtuin 4 (Sirt4), highly expressed in liver and skeletal muscle mitochondria, serve as active regulators of mitochondrial oxidative capacity with opposite functions. In obesity both GH/IGF-1 status and serum Sirt4 levels, likely mirroring its reduced mitochondrial expression, might be altered. Objective: To evaluate the association between circulating levels of Sirt4, body composition, metabolic parameters and cardio-metabolic risk profile in obese patients according to their different GH/IGF-1 status. Design: Cross-sectional study with measurement of serum Sirt4, GH after GH releasing hormone (GHRH)+Arginine test, IGF-1 and assessment of body composition, glucose and lipid metabolism in 50 class II-III obese subjects (BMI 35.6 to 62.1kg/m2) and 15 normal weight subjects. Low GH secretion and IGF-1 were defined using pre-determined cutoff-points. The Homeostatic Metabolic Assessment of insulin resistance index and Visceral adiposity index were also calculated. The association of Sirt4 with peak stimulated GH and IGF-1, body composition, metabolic parameters and cardio-metabolic risk profile was assessed. Results: Serum Sirt4 was inversely related to anthropometric and metabolic parameters and positively related to peak GH and IGF-1. After adjusting for peak GH and IGF-1, the relationships between Sirt4 and BMI became not significant. At multiple regression analysis IGF-1 (p < 0.001) was the independent predictor for Sirt4. Conclusion: There was a close relationship between low IGF-1 and low serum Sirt4. This observation suggested that in obese patients, low GH/IGF-1 status was likely associated with a major compensatory decrease in circulating levels of Sirt4 to oppose to its negative regulator effect on mitochondrial oxidative capacity
