The Relationship Between Demographic Characteristics, Types of Contact with Police, and Perceptions of Police
Police officers play a very important role in their communities, considering they need to interact with the public in order to carry out their duties. For that reason, the relationship between the public and police officers has been the focus of many studies. The current study analyzed data from the 2011 Police-Public Contact Survey (n= 49,246). The study was conducted in three separate parts - the relationship between individual demographic characteristics and type of contact with the police, individual demographic characteristics and perceptions of police, and type of contact with the police and perceptions of the police. The results from this study were consistent with previous findings from studies that used smaller populations, as it was found that women were more likely to have voluntary contact with police than men, non-Hispanics had more voluntary contact with police than those of Hispanic Origin, women reported more positive perceptions of police, there was a positive relationship between age and perception of the police, and those who had voluntary contact had a more positive perception of police officers than those who had involuntary contact

Volumetric calibration of a propellant utilization system
Method of calibrating capacitance-type propellant mass sensors provides meaningful mass units accurate to within one percent of the total load. Neither special propellant loading nor test firing is required. Recalibration of the system is possible without special propellant loading. This method provides increased flexibility for vehicle operation
Use of Solr and Xapian in the Invenio document repository software
Invenio is a free comprehensive web-based document repository and digital
library software suite originally developed at CERN. It can serve a variety of
use cases from an institutional repository or digital library to a web journal.
In order to fully use full-text documents for efficient search and ranking,
Solr was integrated into Invenio through a generic bridge. Solr indexes
extracted full-texts and most relevant metadata. Consequently, Invenio takes
advantage of Solr's efficient search and word similarity ranking capabilities.
In this paper, we first give an overview of Invenio, its capabilities and
features. We then present our open source Solr integration as well as
scalability challenges that arose for an Invenio-based multi-million record
repository: the CERN Document Server. We also compare our Solr adapter to an
alternative Xapian adapter using the same generic bridge. Both integrations are
distributed with the Invenio package and ready to be used by the institutions
using or adopting Invenio
How to make inhabitants of Nyon walk more
Nowadays, Mobility becomes more and more important in a city long run development. The traffic jams created by the cars associated to the increase in the population is a challenging problem for every city. The challenges concern several areas, energy, pollution and security. Among them mobility plays a key roll, it connects everything and implies several actors. If a city would like to grow, attract companies and satisfy their inhabitants, it must offer appropriate mobility services. Health is also a major topic, overweight people are increasing seriously and the population is getting older and older and that will bring new challenges for the mobility. It’s important to focus on the people’s health and pedestrian mobility is a good weapon against it. Walking is the best way to get people moving, it maintains our body fit, it doesn’t make any noise and is pollution free. Unfortunately decades of transportation improvements, tends to remove people’s habit to walk, since the Human is lazy. Nyon is growing, since a few years several International companies started to come to Nyon and the construction of a new neighbourhood just started. In order to keep a nice living environment and a good quality life, the city needs to manage the future mobility services intelligently. The city is already a victim of the amount of cars going through the centre, causing important traffic jams. This traffic problem forces the city to re design all the bus lines in order to maintain an efficient service. Around the world several companies and cities have already started the “fight” for mobility. Some good practices and efficient policies show that everybody benefits from getting active. Some good examples for improving mobility are shown in the literature. This paper provides a study of the walking practices in Nyon. Two surveys were conducted first a qualitative one and second a quantitative one. The objective was to grab the inhabitant’s feelings about the mobility, especially the pedestrian one. With this data we show some topics and areas to focus on. For example, the study shows that the people living in Nyon are missing some pedestrian streets and parks. They would like to walk in a pedestrian friendly environment with adequate infrastructures. Consequently without rebuilding the entire city we gave the city of Nyon a recommendation to push people to walk more and to create a friendly walking environment. This recommendation implies most of the time, the participation of the inhabitants to break their bad habits and to get involvement in a long term
Nodes having a major influence to break cooperation define a novel centrality measure
Cooperation played a significant role in the self-organization and evolution
of living organisms. Both network topology and the initial position of
cooperators heavily affect the cooperation of social dilemma games. We
developed a novel simulation program package, called 'NetworGame', which is
able to simulate any type of social dilemma games on any model, or real world
networks with any assignment of initial cooperation or defection strategies to
network nodes. The ability of initially defecting single nodes to break overall
cooperation was called as 'game centrality'. The efficiency of this measure was
verified on well-known social networks, and was extended to 'protein games',
i.e. the simulation of cooperation between proteins, or their amino acids. Hubs
and in particular, party hubs of yeast protein-protein interaction networks had
a large influence to convert the cooperation of other nodes to defection.
Simulations on methionyl-tRNA synthetase protein structure network indicated an
increased influence of nodes belonging to intra-protein signaling pathways on
breaking cooperation. The efficiency of single, initially defecting nodes to
convert the cooperation of other nodes to defection in social dilemma games may
be an important measure to predict the importance of nodes in the integration
and regulation of complex systems. Game centrality may help to design more
efficient interventions to cellular networks (in forms of drugs), to ecosystems
and social networks. The NetworGame algorithm is downloadable from here:
