The Paleoenvironment of the Lower Mississippi River Delta During the Late Holocene
Palynological, lithological, loss-on-ignition, and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy data were collected from a modified Livingstone core retrieved from Bay Jimmy, Louisiana. This data indicates a slow, general regression of the marsh due to sea level rise. This trend was punctuated by several catastrophic events including floods from around ca. 600 Yr BP and ca. 360 Yr BP, a fire around ca. 950 Yr BP, and still more flooding caused by the landfall of Hurricane Audrey in AD 1957, and Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in AD 2005. In more recent years (220 Yr BP to present) the marsh appears to have thinned out. This may be due to anthropogenic barriers, which have inhibited the marsh’s natural retreat as witnessed over the past 1200 years recorded by this core
A survey of Western Australian teachers’ use of texts in supporting beginning readers
Connected text reading is crucial to beginning reading development as this is where children apply the reading skills they are learning. The most recent version of the Australian Curriculum includes the requirement that teachers use both predictable and decodable texts in early reading instruction. As each text type is underpinned by a different approach to reading instruction, this creates a potential dilemma for teachers when implementing the curriculum. A preliminary study of the instructional practices used to teach reading in the first two years of schooling was therefore conducted to investigate how early years teachers make use of two different text types that are arguably incompatible. An online survey regarding approaches to reading instruction and use of different text types was distributed to Western Australian Pre-primary and Year 1 teachers via several social media platforms. A total of 138 teachers responded. Survey responses indicated that these teachers do not have a coherent understanding of the purpose of different text types in beginning reading instruction. The findings highlight the need to improve early years teachers’ knowledge of the instructional strategies aligned to each text type so that they can make informed decisions when supporting children’s reading development
EFECTOS DE UN PROGRAMA VIRTUAL DE MINDFULNESS SOBRE NIVELES DE ANSIEDAD EN COLABORADORAS DE UNA REVISTA ONLINE
In recent years, multiple studies have been carried out on mindfulness and its impact on health, especially in the field of anxiety. This article will demonstrate the effects of a virtual mindfulness program on collaborators of an online magazine. To do this, two mindfulness and anxiety instruments have been applied in a sample of 6 women, and subsequently a 5-week virtual mindfulness program. Concluding that this study has met the expectations of the results, anxiety levels decreased while mindfulness levels increased considerably in the sample.En los últimos años se han realizado múltiples estudios en torno al mindfulness y su impacto en la salud, sobre todo en el ámbito de la ansiedad. Este artículo demostrará los efectos que tiene un programa virtual de mindfulness en colaboradoras de una revista online. Para ello, se han aplicado dos instrumentos de mindfulness y ansiedad en una muestra de 6 mujeres, y posteriormente un programa virtual de mindfulness de 5 semanas. Concluyendo: que este estudio ha cumplido con las expectativas de los resultados, los niveles de ansiedad disminuyeron mientras que los niveles de atención plena aumentaron de forma considerable en la muestra
A preliminary evaluation of a manualised intervention to improve early literacy skills in children with developmental language disorder
Children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) commonly present with oral language weaknesses which disrupt the development of literacy and impede related academic progress. While there is evidence to support the delivery of manualised Tier 2 interventions with this population, little is known about the effects of Tier 1 interventions. A retrospective cohort comparison was used to evaluate whether there was an observable effect of a manualised Tier 1 intervention compared to ‘business-as-usual’ on early literacy skills for children with DLD. Participants were 140 children attending a specialised education program with equivalent oral language skills and alphabetic knowledge at baseline. After 18 months formal literacy intervention, both groups were assessed on measures of early literacy skills. The differences between group means on all measures favoured the manualised intervention group, and they performed significantly better on a measure of nonword reading fluency. The findings indicate that a manualised Tier 1 intervention may be advantageous for children with DLD in developing proficiency in phonological recoding. This research contributes to the sparse evidence-base supporting the implementation of Tier 1 interventions for at risk populations, and findings warrant future research using experimental designs with tighter controls
Spintronic Terahertz Emitters: Status and Prospects from a Materials Perspective
Spintronic terahertz (THz) emitters, consisting of ferromagnetic (FM)/non-magnetic (NM) thin films, have demonstrated remarkable potential for use in THz time-domain spectroscopy and its exploitation in scientific and industrial applications. Since the discovery that novel FM/NM heterostructures can be utilized as sources of THz radiation, researchers have endeavored to find the optimum combination of materials to produce idealized spintronic emitters capable of generating pulses of THz radiation over a large spectral bandwidth. In the last decade, researchers have investigated the influence of a wide range of material properties, including the choice of materials and thicknesses of the layers, the quality of the FM/NM interface, and the stack geometry upon the emission of THz radiation. It has been found that particular combinations of these properties have greatly improved the amplitude and bandwidth of the emitted THz pulse. Significantly, studying the material properties of spintronic THz emitters has increased the understanding of the spin-to-charge current conversion processes involved in the generation of THz radiation. Ultimately, this has facilitated the development of spintronic heterostructures that can emit THz radiation without the application of an external magnetic field. In this review, we present a comprehensive overview of the experimental and theoretical findings that have led to the development of spintronic THz emitters, which hold promise for use in a wide range of THz applications. We summarize the current understanding of the mechanisms that contribute to the emission of THz radiation from the spintronic heterostructures and explore how the material properties contribute to the emission process
Impacto da vacinação contra o Haemophilus influenzae b na redução de meningites, Goiás
OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of the Haemophilus influenzae b (Hib) conjugate vaccine in reducing the incidence of meningitis among children under five years old. METHODS: A 'before-after' design was used to compare Hib meningitis incidence rates in the pre-vaccine (July 1995 - June 1999) and post-vaccine (July 1999 - June 2001) periods in the state of Goiás, central Brazil. Bacterial meningitis case definition was based on World Health Organization criteria. Incidence rates of S. pneumoniae and N. meningitidis were used for comparison purposes. Chi-squared and Student's t tests were used for statistical analysis. P-values below 0.05 were considered as statistically significant. RESULTS: 979 children with acute bacterial meningitis were detected throughout the entire period. The incidence rate of Hib meningitis decreased from 10.8 (x10(5)) in the pre-vaccine period to 2.3 (x10(5)) in the 2nd year post vaccination, leading to a risk reduction of 78%, targeted to the 7-23 months age group (pOBJETIVO: Avaliar o impacto da vacinação contra o Haemophilus influenzae b na incidência de meningites em crianças menores de cinco anos de idade.
