Be a Good Samaritan to a Good Samaritan: Field Evidence of Interdependent Other-Regarding Preferences in China
We conducted large-scale lost letter experiments in Beijing, a megacity with more than 21 million residents, to test if the observed altruistic attribute of the letter recipient would induce more passersby to return the lost letters. The treatment letters were addressed to a nationally renowned charitable organization in China, while the control letters were intended to an invented individual. A total of 832 ready-to-be-posted letters were distributed in 208 communities across eight districts in the city. The overall return rate was only about 13%. Yet, the return rate of the treatment letters (17%) was nearly twice as high as that of the control letters (9%). The finding adds large-scale field experiment evidence in support of the interdependent other-regarding preferences theory. In addition, we also found that the lost letters were more likely to be returned if they were dropped in communities with a relatively higher income or a postal box located closer
Squeezed-light-enhanced atom interferometry below the standard quantum limit
We investigate the prospect of enhancing the phase sensitivity of atom interferometers in the Mach-Zehnder configuration with squeezed light. Ultimately, this enhancement is achieved by transferring the quantum state of squeezed light to one or more of the atomic input beams, thereby allowing operation below the standard quantum limit. We analyze in detail three specific schemes that utilize (1) single-mode squeezed optical vacuum (i.e., low-frequency squeezing), (2) two-mode squeezed optical vacuum (i.e., high-frequency squeezing) transferred to both atomic inputs, and (3) two-mode squeezed optical vacuum transferred to a single atomic input. Crucially, our analysis considers incomplete quantum state transfer (QST) between the optical and atomic modes, and the effects of depleting the initially prepared atomic source. Unsurprisingly, incomplete QST degrades the sensitivity in all three schemes. We show that by measuring the transmitted photons and using information recycling [Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 053002 (2013)], the degrading effects of incomplete QST on the sensitivity can be substantially reduced. In particular, information recycling allows scheme (2) to operate at the Heisenberg limit irrespective of the QST efficiency, even when depletion is significant. Although we concentrate on Bose- condensed atomic systems, our scheme is equally applicable to ultracold thermal vapors
Generation of atom-light entanglement in an optical cavity for quantum enhanced atom interferometry
We theoretically investigate the generation of atom-light entanglement via Raman superradiance in an optical cavity, and show how this can be used to enhance the sensitivity of atom interferometry. We model a realistic optical cavity, and show that by careful temporal shaping of the optical local oscillator used to measure the light emitted from the cavity, information in the optical mode can be combined with the signal from the atom interferometer to reduce the quantum noise, and thus increase the sensitivity. It was found in Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 053002 (2013) that an atomic “seed” was required in order to reduce spontaneous emission and allow for single mode behavior of the device. In this paper we find that the optical cavity reduces the need for an atomic seed, which allows for stronger atom-light correlations and a greater level of quantum enhancement
Unusually Wide Binaries: Are They Wide or Unusual?
We describe an astrometric and spectroscopic campaign to confirm the youth
and association of a complete sample of candidate wide companions in Taurus and
Upper Sco. Our survey found fifteen new binary systems (3 in Taurus and 12 in
Upper Sco) with separations of 3-30" (500-5000 AU) among all of the known
members with masses of 2.5-0.012 Msun. The total sample of 49 wide systems in
these two regions conforms to only some expectations from field multiplicity
surveys. Higher-mass stars have a higher frequency of wide binary companions,
and there is a marked paucity of wide binary systems near the substellar
regime. However, the separation distribution appears to be log-flat, rather
than declining as in the field, and the mass ratio distribution is more biased
toward similar-mass companions than the IMF or the field G dwarf distribution.
The maximum separation also shows no evidence of a limit at <5000 AU until the
abrupt cessation of any wide binary formation at system masses of ~0.3 Msun. We
attribute this result to the post-natal dynamical sculpting that occurs for
most field systems; our binary systems will escape to the field intact, but
most field stars are formed in denser clusters and do not. In summary, only

The VLTI / PIONIER near-infrared interferometric survey of southern T Tauri stars. I. First results
Context : The properties of the inner disks of bright Herbig AeBe stars have
been studied with near infrared (NIR) interferometry and high resolution
spectroscopy. The continuum and a few molecular gas species have been studied
close to the central star; however, sensitivity problems limit direct
information about the inner disks of the fainter T Tauri stars.
Aims : Our aim is to measure some of the properties of the inner regions of
disks surrounding southern T Tauri stars.
Methods : We performed a survey with the PIONIER recombiner instrument at
H-band of 21 T Tauri stars. The baselines used ranged from 11 m to 129 m,
corresponding to a maximum resolution of 3mas (0.45 au at 150 pc).
Results : Thirteen disks are resolved well and the visibility curves are
fully sampled as a function of baseline in the range 45-130 m for these 13
objects. A simple qualitative examination of visibility profiles allows us to
identify a rapid drop-off in the visibilities at short baselines in 8 resolved
disks. This is indicative of a significant contribution from an extended
contribution of light from the disk. We demonstrate that this component is
compatible with scattered light, providing strong support to a prediction made
by Pinte et al. (2008). The amplitude of the drop-off and the amount of dust
thermal emission changes from source to source suggesting that each disk is
different. A by-product of the survey is the identification of a new
milli-arcsec separation binary: WW Cha. Spectroscopic and interferometric data
of AK Sco have also been fitted with a binary and disk model.
Conclusions : Visibility data are reproduced well when thermal emission and
scattering form dust are fully considered. The inner radii measured are
consistent with the expected dust sublimation radii. Modelling of AK Sco

A systematic review: efficacy of botulinum toxin in walking and quality of life in post-stroke lower limb spasticity.
BACKGROUND: Improved walking is one of the highest priorities in people living with stroke. Post-stroke lower limb spasticity (PSLLS) impedes walking and quality of life (QOL). The understanding of the evidence of improved walking and QOL following botulinum toxin (BoNTA) injection is not clear. We performed a systematic review of the randomized control trials (RCT) to evaluate the effectiveness of BoNTA injection on walking and QOL in PSLLS. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, CINAHL, ProQuest Thesis and Dissertation checks, Google Scholar, WHO International Clinical Trial Registry Platform, ClinicalTrials.gov , Cochrane, and ANZ and EU Clinical Trials Register for RCTs looking at improvement in walking and QOL following injection of BoNTA in PSLLS. The original search was carried out prior to 16 September 2015. We conducted an additional verifying search on CINHAL, EMBASE, and MEDLINE (via PubMed) from 16 September 2015 to 6 June 2017 using the same clauses as the previous search. Methodological quality of the individual studies was critically appraised using Joanna Briggs Institute's instrument. Only placebo-controlled RCTs looking at improvement in walking and QOL were included in the review. RESULTS: Of 2026 records, we found 107 full-text records. Amongst them, we found five RCTs qualifying our criteria. No new trials were found from the verifying search. Two independent reviewers assessed methodological validity prior to inclusion in the review using Joanna Briggs Institute's appraisal instrument. Two studies reported significant improvement in gait velocity (p = 0.020) and < 0.05, respectively. One study showed significant improvement in 2-min-walking distance (p < 0.05). QOL was recorded in one study without any significant improvement. Meta-analysis of reviewed studies could not be performed because of different methods of assessing walking ability, small sample size with large confidence interval and issues such as lack of power calculations in some studies. Findings from our systematic and detailed study identify the need for a well-designed RCT to adequately investigate the issues highlighted. CONCLUSIONS: This review could not conclude there was sufficient evidence to support or refute improvement on walking or QOL following BoNTA injection. Reasons for this are discussed, and methods for future RCTs are developed
The UPS in diabetes and obesity
Type 2 diabetes is caused by defects in both insulin signaling and insulin secretion. Though the role of the ubiquitin proteasome system (UPS) in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes remains largely unexplored, the few examples present in the literature are interesting and suggest targets for drug development. Studies indicate that insulin resistance can be induced by stimulating the degradation of important molecules in the insulin signaling pathway, in particular the insulin receptor substrate proteins IRS1, IRS2 and the kinase AKT1 (Akt). In addition, a defect in insulin secretion could occur due to UPS-mediated degradation of IRS2 in the β-cells of the pancreas. The UPS also appears to be involved in regulating lipid synthesis in adipocytes and lipid production by the liver and could influence the development of obesity. Other possible mechanisms for inducing defects in insulin signaling and secretion remain to be explored, including the role of ubiquitylation in insulin receptor internalization and trafficking
Fetal testosterone and autistic traits
Studies of amniotic testosterone in humans suggest that fetal testosterone (fT) is related to specific (but not all) sexually dimorphic aspects of cognition and behaviour. It has also been suggested that autism may be an extreme manifestation of some male-typical traits, both in terms of cognition and neuroanatomy. In this paper, we examine the possibility of a link between autistic traits and fT levels measured in amniotic fluid during routine amniocentesis. Two instruments measuring number of autistic traits (the Childhood Autism Spectrum Test (CAST) and the Child Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ-Child)) were completed by these women about their children (N = 235), ages 6-10 years. Intelligence Quotient (IQ) was measured in a subset of these children (N = 74). fT levels were positively associated with higher scores on the CAST and AQ-Child. This relationship was seen within sex as well as when the sexes were combined, suggesting this is an effect of fT rather than of sex per se. No relationships were found between overall IQ and the predictor variables, or between IQ and CAST or AQ-Child. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that prenatal androgen exposure is related to children exhibiting more autistic traits. These results need to be followed up in a much larger sample to test if clinical cases of ASC have elevated fT.</p
