Searching for novel carbonic anhydrase inhibitors: from virtual screening to the lab bench
Carbonic Anhydrases (CAs) are zinc metalloenzymes that catalyze the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide to bicarbonate both in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. In this context, Computer Aided Drug Design strategies have emerged as powerful tools in the modern drug discovery paradigm. In particular, using ligand- and pharmacophore-based virtual screening approaches, we identified novel chemical entities with original chemotypes, that showed an interesting and selective inhibitory activity in nanomolar/low micromolar range toward CA I and CAII, isoforms.
Herein, we present the hit-to-lead optimization process for these prototypes
Block training periodization in alpine skiing: effects of 11-day HIT on V O2max and performance
Attempting to achieve the high diversity of training goals in modern competitive alpine skiing simultaneously can be difficult and may lead to compromised overall adaptation. Therefore, we investigated the effect of block training periodization on maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) and parameters of exercise performance in elite junior alpine skiers. Six female and 15 male athletes were assigned to high-intensity interval (IT, N=13) or control training groups (CT, N=8). IT performed 15 high-intensity aerobic interval (HIT) sessions in 11days. Sessions were 4×4min at 90-95% of maximal heart rate separated by 3-min recovery periods. CT continued their conventionally mixed training, containing endurance and strength sessions. Before and 7days after training, subjects performed a ramp incremental test followed by a high-intensity time-to-exhaustion (tlim) test both on a cycle ergometer, a 90-s high-box jump test as well as countermovement (CMJ) and squat jumps (SJ) on a force plate. IT significantly improved relative VO2max by 6.0% (P<0.01; male +7.5%, female +2.1%), relative peak power output by 5.5% (P<0.01) and power output at ventilatory threshold 2 by 9.6% (P<0.01). No changes occurred for these measures in CT. tlim remained unchanged in both groups. High-box jump performance was significantly improved in males of IT only (4.9%, P<0.05). Jump peak power (CMJ −4.8%, SJ −4.1%; P<0.01), but not height decreased in IT only. For competitive alpine skiers, block periodization of HIT offers a promising way to efficiently improve VO2max and performance. Compromised explosive jump performance might be associated with persisting muscle fatigu
Highly indistinguishable single photons from incoherently and coherently excited GaAs quantum dots
Semiconductor quantum dots are converging towards the demanding requirements
of photonic quantum technologies. Among different systems, quantum dots with
dimensions exceeding the free-exciton Bohr radius are appealing because of
their high oscillator strengths. While this property has received much
attention in the context of cavity quantum electrodynamics, little is known
about the degree of indistinguishability of single photons consecutively
emitted by such dots and on the proper excitation schemes to achieve high
indistinguishability. A prominent example is represented by GaAs quantum dots
obtained by local droplet etching, which recently outperformed other systems as
triggered sources of entangled photon pairs. On these dots, we compare
different single-photon excitation mechanisms, and we find (i) a "phonon
bottleneck" and poor indistinguishability for conventional excitation via
excited states and (ii) photon indistinguishablilities above 90% for both
strictly resonant and for incoherent acoustic- and optical-phonon-assisted
excitation. Among the excitation schemes, optical phonon-assisted excitation
enables straightforward laser rejection without a compromise on the source
brightness together with a high photon indistinguishability

Reverberation
reverberation is an installation consisting of a 4-channel video installation (4x LED screens á 1920 x 1080) and performative installation (drum kit, fair carpet in royal blue, bricks made of ballistic gel colored, live performance). The live performance took place throughout the exhibition time. The time slots of the performance remained unannounced.
reverberation deals in its two foldedness with the performativity of materiality and the inhabited violence, symbolic power and gender/class struggle. On a compositional and musical level which is presented in repetition, synchronicity, mirroring and jump cuts,
reverberation explores the plasticity of materials, emotionality and their resistance to human control. Furthermore, reverberation is a work on body memory, on what is left in human flesh, structure and architecture. The two parts of the work, the video installation and the performative installation were kept in distance, spatially they were almost on top of each other. The video installation was installed in the first floor (KUVA/TILA gallery) and the performative installation took place on the second floor of Mylly building, visible right after the stair cases. In order to witness the second part of the work, one had to cross the exhibition space, walking along several art works which were displayed in the entrance and stairs of the Mylly building. Then, one had to go up or down the staircase. The soundtrack of the video is detached from it. In the written component I attempt to describe and reflect on the artistic process that lies behind the work reverberation. The thesis consist of fragments of reflections, documentations and contextualizations. Through the term distance I unfold the process of moving from a choreographic and dance practice into video and installation based work. I put the process of reverberation in relation to this reflection in oder to map my development and position as an artist who is working on the intersection of choreography, performance, video and installation. Further on I am describing the process behind reverberation oscillation between artistic interest, past works such as Hypothetic Bodies (2021) and LEASHED UNLEASHED (2021) and in reference to artists who have inspired my work, such like Yvonne Rainer, American dancer, choreographer and filmmaker and also danish choreographer and dancer Mette Ingvartsen and the writing of Jenn Joy, performance artist. By reflecting on the process of operating with different materials I am thinking around the question of: how can we think beyond the human in art? And not least, I open the speculation about an artistic practice that not only collaborators, co-creates amongst disciplines, ways of thinking but involves and is aware of material/nonhuman/inanimate in order to understand human movement - and the nonhuman in us
