    Faces do not capture special attention in children with autism spectrum disorder: a change blindness study

    Two experiments investigated attention of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to faces and objects. In both experiments, children (7- to 15-year-olds) detected the difference between 2 visual scenes. Results in Experiment 1 revealed that typically developing children (n = 16) detected the change in faces faster than in objects, whereas children with ASD (n = 16) were equally fast in detecting changes in faces and objects. These results were replicated in Experiment 2 (n = 16 in children with ASD and 22 in typically developing children), which does not require face recognition skill. Results suggest that children with ASD lack an attentional bias toward others' faces, which could contribute to their atypical social orienting

    The Shift in the Roles of Local Emergency Management Agencies in the Planning and Response to Civil Unrest

    Local government\u27s response to civil unrest has continually shown a concerning level of unpreparedness and how quickly inundated local government becomes during a response to civil unrest. The theoretical framework used for this study is knowledge management due to its ability to be used in different disciplines like emergency management, safety, and business. This framework is used to get all stakeholders to work in concert to attain strategically planned goals. The research question explored how the local emergency manager\u27s knowledge and experience directly impacted strategic planning, response, and community relations during a civil unrest event? The research design was a case study; as Dooley explained, case study research is one method that excels at understanding complex issues and can add strength to what is already known through previous research. Interviews were performed using a questionnaire and prior civil unrest lesson-learned reports for triangulation and validation of the study. The participants in the study were 11 first responders, police officers, emergency managers, political leaders, and community leaders. The study looked in depth at each participant\u27s information, knowledge, and experience during the civil unrest. The data collected from these interviews were coded for themes that emerged regarding how the participants\u27 knowledge and experience impacted strategic planning. The results from the data found that communication, coordination, and command structure issues were vital in the multiagency response to the Freddie Gray civil unrest. The positive social change this study provided is the need to use the whole community approach effectively to address the disconnect between police, first responders, local governments, and all stakeholder

    The macroscopic effects of microscopic heterogeneity

    Over the past decade, advances in super-resolution microscopy and particle-based modeling have driven an intense interest in investigating spatial heterogeneity at the level of single molecules in cells. Remarkably, it is becoming clear that spatiotemporal correlations between just a few molecules can have profound effects on the signaling behavior of the entire cell. While such correlations are often explicitly imposed by molecular structures such as rafts, clusters, or scaffolds, they also arise intrinsically, due strictly to the small numbers of molecules involved, the finite speed of diffusion, and the effects of macromolecular crowding. In this chapter we review examples of both explicitly imposed and intrinsic correlations, focusing on the mechanisms by which microscopic heterogeneity is amplified to macroscopic effect.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures.     Towards an effective potential for the monomer, dimer, hexamer, solid and liquid forms of hydrogen fluoride

    We present an attempt to build up a new two-body effective potential for hydrogen fluoride, fitted to theoretical and experimental data relevant not only to the gas and liquid phases, but also to the crystal. The model is simple enough to be used in Molecular Dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations. The potential consists of: a) an intra-molecular contribution, allowing for variations of the molecular length, plus b) an inter-molecular part, with three charged sites on each monomer and a Buckingham "exp-6" interaction between fluorines. The model is able to reproduce a significant number of observables on the monomer, dimer, hexamer, solid and liquid forms of HF.     See no Evil: Challenges of security surveillance and monitoring

    While the development of intelligent technologies in security surveillance can augment human capabilities, they do not replace the role of the operator entirely; as such, when developing surveillance support it is critical that limitations to the cognitive system are taken into account. The current article reviews the cognitive challenges associated with the task of a CCTV operator: visual search and cognitive/perceptual overload, attentional failures, vulnerability to distraction, and decision-making in a dynamically evolving environment. While not directly applied to surveillance issues, we suggest that the NSEEV (noticing – salience, effort, expectancy, value) model of attention could provide a useful theoretical basis for understanding the challenges faced in detection and monitoring tasks. Having identified cognitive limitations of the human operator, this review sets out a research agenda for further understanding the cognitive functioning related to surveillance, and highlights the need to consider the human element at the design stage when developing technological solutions to security surveillance

    Pan-Cancer Analysis of lncRNA Regulation Supports Their Targeting of Cancer Genes in Each Tumor Context

    Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are commonly dys-regulated in tumors, but only a handful are known toplay pathophysiological roles in cancer. We inferredlncRNAs that dysregulate cancer pathways, onco-genes, and tumor suppressors (cancer genes) bymodeling their effects on the activity of transcriptionfactors, RNA-binding proteins, and microRNAs in5,185 TCGA tumors and 1,019 ENCODE assays.Our predictions included hundreds of candidateonco- and tumor-suppressor lncRNAs (cancerlncRNAs) whose somatic alterations account for thedysregulation of dozens of cancer genes and path-ways in each of 14 tumor contexts. To demonstrateproof of concept, we showed that perturbations tar-geting OIP5-AS1 (an inferred tumor suppressor) andTUG1 and WT1-AS (inferred onco-lncRNAs) dysre-gulated cancer genes and altered proliferation ofbreast and gynecologic cancer cells. Our analysis in-dicates that, although most lncRNAs are dysregu-lated in a tumor-specific manner, some, includingOIP5-AS1, TUG1, NEAT1, MEG3, and TSIX, synergis-tically dysregulate cancer pathways in multiple tumorcontexts

    Random Matrix Theories in Quantum Physics: Common Concepts

    We review the development of random-matrix theory (RMT) during the last decade. We emphasize both the theoretical aspects, and the application of the theory to a number of fields. These comprise chaotic and disordered systems, the localization problem, many-body quantum systems, the Calogero-Sutherland model, chiral symmetry breaking in QCD, and quantum gravity in two dimensions. The review is preceded by a brief historical survey of the developments of RMT and of localization theory since their inception. We emphasize the concepts common to the above-mentioned fields as well as the great diversity of RMT. In view of the universality of RMT, we suggest that the current development signals the emergence of a new "statistical mechanics": Stochasticity and general symmetry requirements lead to universal laws not based on dynamical principles.Comment: 178 pages, Revtex, 45 figures, submitted to Physics Report
