Making Commitments to Racial Justice Actionable
In this article, we articulate a framework for making our commitments to racial justice actionable, a framework that moves from narrating confessional accounts to articulating our commitments and then acting on them through both self-work and work-with-others, a dialectic possibility we identify and explore. We model a method for moving beyond originary confessional narratives and engage in dialogue with “the willingness to be disturbed” (Wheatley, 2002), believing that disturbances are productive places from which we can more clearly articulate and act from our commitments. Drawing on our own experiences, we engage the political, systemic, and enduring nature of racism as we together chart an educational frame that counters the macro-logics of oppression enacted daily through micro-inequities. As we advocate for additional and ongoing considerations of the work of antiracism in educational settings, we invite others to embrace, along with us, both the willingness to be disturbed and the attention to making commitments actionable

Language engineering - a champion for European culture
Language is key to culture. It is a direct cultural medium as well as a means of recording and providing access to non-lingual elements of culture. Language is also fundamental to a sense of cultural identity. For this reason, it is vital, in a changing Europe, that we preserve the multi-lingual character of our society in order to move successfully towards closer co-operation at a political, economic, and social level.
Language engineering is the application of knowledge of language to the development of computer software which can recognise, understand, interpret, and generate human language in all its forms.
The paper provides a high level view of the ‘state of the art’ in language engineering and indicates ways in which it will have a profound impact on our culture in the future. It shows how advances in language engineering are an important aid in maintaining cultural diversity in a multi-lingual European society, while enabling the development of social cohesion across cultural and national divides. It addresses issues raised by the prospect of the Multi-lingual Information Society, including education, human communication with technology and information management, as well as aspects of digital cities such as tele-presence in digital libraries, virtual art galleries and electronic museums. The paper raises the issue of language as a factor in cultural domination, showing the contribution that language engineering can make towards countering it.
The paper also raises a number of controversial issues concerning the likely benefits arising from the ways in which language is likely to influence the culture of Europe

Résurgences nationalistes et divergences politiques : quel avenir pour l'Union britannique
Ce document sera publié en ligne en texte intégral en mars 2012: http://etudesecossaises.revues.org/index363.htmlTen years after the 1997 Scottish and Welsh referenda, Plaid Cymru and the SNP both became parties of government in their respective nations. The vast majority of the Welsh and Scottish populations today are in favour of the extension of powers of the Scottish Parliament and the National Assembly of Wales. Both governments have indeed agreed to organize new referenda on the political and constitutional future of their institutions before the 2011 Scottish and Welsh general elections. The development of Welsh and Scottish politics since 1999 is therefore contrary to the Labour Party's expectations as it wished to curb nationalism by implementing devolution. Resurgent Nationalisms: What Future for the United Kingdom?" A Multi-Dimensional Pedagogy for Racial Justice in Writing Centers
In light of disciplinary conversations and increased attention to anti-racism in writing centers, we see a disciplinary mandate for writing centers to better articulate a pedagogy for racial justice that informs our everyday work, including but not limited to tutoring practice. This mandate, we believe, involves asking: How do we make actionable our commitment to racial justice when working with writers one-with-one? What interactional stances and pedagogical moves enact a pedagogy of anti-racism in writing centers? How do we prepare ourselves to enact this pedagogy? Our answers to these questions center around (1) articulating and frequently re-articulating our commitments to racial and social justice and (2) making these commitments actionable through both reflective self-work and action-oriented work-with-others, as we have written in the related article “Making Commitments to Racial Justice Actionable.” This work leads us to argue that a pedagogy of anti-racism must be more than a statement that we abhor racial injustice. Rather, this pedagogy must be multi-dimensional and include a positive and actionable articulation of the “ought to be” that we are aiming toward
On the interactions of lipids and proteins in the red blood cell membrane
The effects of temperature and of the action of a purified phospholipase C enzyme preparation on human red blood cell membranes has been investigated by chemical analyses, circular dichroism, and proton magnetic resonance measurements. The results indicate that a substantial fraction of the phospholipids and the proteins of the membranes can change structure independently of one another, suggesting a mosaic pattern for the organization of the lipids and proteins in membranes

Theory for Nonlinear Spectroscopy of Vibrational Polaritons
Molecular polaritons have gained considerable attention due to their
potential to control nanoscale molecular processes by harnessing
electromagnetic coherence. Although recent experiments with liquid-phase
vibrational polaritons have shown great promise for exploiting these effects,
significant challenges remain in interpreting their spectroscopic signatures.
In this letter, we develop a quantum-mechanical theory of pump-probe
spectroscopy for this class of polaritons based on the quantum Langevin
equations and the input-output theory. Comparison with recent experimental data
shows good agreement upon consideration of the various vibrational
anharmonicities that modulate the signals. Finally, a simple and intuitive
interpretation of the data based on an effective mode-coupling theory is
provided. Our work provides a solid theoretical framework to elucidate
nonlinear optical properties of molecular polaritons as well as to analyze
further multidimensional spectroscopy experiments on these systems
