Histories of Power’ and the ‘Universalisation of Capital’ in India: Between and Beyond Marxism and Postcolonial Theory

    Get PDF
Capitalist development in India, and the politics of those who are its immediate victims, defies the main varieties of postcolonial theory and Marxism that are today in contentious debate, in which postcolonial theory is identified with culture and particularity, and Marxism with political economy and universalism. Rejecting this framing, I draw attention to recently translated works by Marx, debates in agrarian political economy, and writings that emphasize the temporal specificity of contemporary capitalist development in India. I show the ‘compulsion’ of capitalists to compete and workers to sell their labour is held back by the ongoing politics of hegemony: capitalists want state protection and support for accumulation, and democracy and rights provide the poor with limited but sometimes effective political power. As a result, the primitive accumulation process remains indefinitely incomplete, and mature capitalism, defined by some Marxists as ‘universal’, is held in a sustained state of deferral. </jats:p

Globalization is now a universal term that is conventionally accepted throughout the globe. It tries to suggest a common global civilization and a unified world. Globalization spread its wings and touched almost every corner of the globe. However, in India, it has also shown its existence in various fields. The touch of globalization has a wide impact on Indian society and the mass media enhances the pace of the impact. Globalization brings a wide range of foreign cultures and mass media continuously propagates those cultures among the Indian society. After the amalgamation of the foreign cultures with the Indian one, social change are taking place and developing a hybrid culture. The article entitled ‘Globalization, Mass Media and the Social Changes of India’ makes a thorough analysis and shows how globalization with the help of mass media developed a hybrid culture and how hybrid cultures dominate the Indian social system

The present study has been conducted in three districts of West Bengal, namely, Burdwan, Murshidabad and Nadia. The main objective of the present study was to assess the perception of beneficiaries about impact of MGNREGS on economic, social and societal empowerment of beneficiaries. The results of the study showed that respondents were primarily having low to semi-medium level of socio-economic orientation. The study revealed that through participation in MGNREGS activities, participants’ average family income; worth of their possession of domestic material, animal resources and farm power could be increased. Moreover, respondents are having positive perception to the tune of semi-medium to medium level about the impact of their participation in MGNREGS activities on their economic, social and societal empowerment. Independent variables like, social participation, cosmopolites, membership of different social organisation, media exposure and respondents’ education had significant association with their perception about economic, social and societal empowerment

Classical oscillator with position-dependent mass in a complex domain

We study complexified Harmonic Oscillator with a position-dependent mass, termed as Complex Exotic Oscillator (CEO). The complexification induces a gauge invariance [19,11]. The role of PT -symmetry is discussed from the perspective of classical trajectories of CEO for real energy. Some trajectories of CEO are similar to those for the particle in a quartic potential in the complex domain [10, 32].Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures, title is changed, some new features have been discussed, to appear in Phys. Lett.
