    Honey is defined as the natural substance produced by Apis mellifera bees from plant nectar, from secretions of the living parts of plants, or from the excretions of plant sucking insects feeding on the living parts of plants.1,2 Honeybees collect, transform, and combine this with specific substances of their own, and then store it and leave it in the honeycomb to ripen and mature. This natural product is generally composed of a complex mixture of carbohydrates and other less common substances, such as organic acids, amino acids, proteins, minerals, vitamins, lipids, aroma compounds, flavonoids, pigments, waxes, pollen grains, several enzymes and other phytochemicals.3 5 However, the specific composition depends on many factors, such as the nectar composition of the source plant, the species of bee, the climate, environmental and seasonal conditions, agricultural practices and treatment of honey during extraction and storage.6-9 As a natural, unprocessed and easily digested food, honey plays an important role in the human diet, and is also used in pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.10 Modern science has studied the medical significance of honeys in healing wounds and burns,11 oncology care,12 as well as its antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

We here present a case series on the use of medical grade honey (MGH) in pediatric wounds. We aim to illustrate the specific antimicrobial and pro-healing activity of MGH and support its easy and safe use. METHODS: Four pediatric patients with wounds of different origin are discussed in this prospective observational case series. All wounds were treated via monotherapy with daily MGH application. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Wound covering with MGH prevents pathogen infiltration and has antimicrobial activity. Moreover, MGH keeps the wound moist and possesses strong pro-healing effects, such as autolytic debridement of non-vital tissue and restoration of vascular structures. The anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative action of MGH together with the supplemented vitamins C and E may inhibit scar formation. CONCLUSION: MGH is safe and easily applicable and can be recommended in all kinds of wounds.1 augustus 201

    Medical grade honey for the treatment of paediatric abdominal wounds: a case series

    Objective: Children are at high risk of injuries and wounds. The application of medical grade honey is a promising approach to improving the healing of wounds of various origin and severity. However, the use of medical grade honey in young paediatric patients remains limited. The aim of this study is to show the safety, efficacy and usefulness of medical grade honey in abdominal wounds, of different causes, in paediatric patients. Method: This was a prospective, observational case series evaluating five young infants with abdominal wounds at the General Hospital in Thessaloniki. All wounds were treated in the same manner with daily medical grade honey applied to the wound area and closely monitored. Results: All treated wounds rapidly presented granulation tissue formation and underwent re-epithelialisation. Peripheral oedema and inflammation decreased upon initial application. Necrotic tissue was effectively debrided when present. Slough was removed and no signs of infection were detected, irrespective of initial wound presentations. Scar formation was minimal and the full range of motion was preserved in all cases. Conclusion: Based on this case study, medical grade honey is safe and effective in treating different abdominal wounds, including infected or dehisced wounds as well as burns. The easy application and broad applicability make medical grade honey recommendable as a first-line treatment in paediatric patients. </jats:sec

    Successful treatment of familial congenital chylothorax by ligation of the thoracic duct: A case report

    A full term boy was admitted with respiratory distress in the fourth week of his life due to spontaneous chylothorax in his right hemithorax. Spontaneous chylothorax occurred previously in a first cousin of the neonate establishing that way the final diagnosis of familial idiopathic congenital pneumothorax. Failure of the conservative treatment consisting of chest tube drainage, discontinuation of oral diet and administration of total parenteral nutrition in combination with octreotide for one month was followed by the successful ligation of the thoracic duct through a right thoracotomy. The boy still remains free of symptoms and without recurrence of the chylothorax two years later
