Coarse-graining the Dynamics of a Driven Interface in the Presence of Mobile Impurities: Effective Description via Diffusion Maps
Developing effective descriptions of the microscopic dynamics of many
physical phenomena can both dramatically enhance their computational
exploration and lead to a more fundamental understanding of the underlying
physics. Previously, an effective description of a driven interface in the
presence of mobile impurities, based on an Ising variant model and a single
empirical coarse variable, was partially successful; yet it underlined the
necessity of selecting additional coarse variables in certain parameter
regimes. In this paper we use a data mining approach to help identify the
coarse variables required. We discuss the implementation of this diffusion map
approach, the selection of a similarity measure between system snapshots
required in the approach, and the correspondence between empirically selected
and automatically detected coarse variables. We conclude by illustrating the
use of the diffusion map variables in assisting the atomistic simulations, and
we discuss the translation of information between fine and coarse descriptions
using lifting and restriction operators.Comment: 28 pages, 10 figure

FTIR, dissolution and anti-viral activity of nevirapine co-crystals
The study uses Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy to identify five Nevirapine (NV) co-crystals,
determines the dissolution profile of the co-crystals and the antiviral activity comparative to pure NV.
Hot stage microscopy measured the purity and integrity of each co-crystal. FTIR analysis was used to identify the
co-crystals to make recommendations regarding the future use of the technique to identify the NV co-crystals.
Dissolution studies of the NV co-crystals prepared with maleic acid, salicylic acid and glutaric acid (NVMLE, NVSLI
and NVGLT, respectively) were completed using the rotating basket method. Assays were conducted using High
Performance Liquid Chromatography and compared to pure NV and the five NV: co-former mixtures. The antiviral
activity was tested to determine whether the co-crystals had an improved activity against HIV-1 compared to pure
NV.
All co-crystals, except NVTTA (a NV co-crystal prepared with rac-tartaric acid), were pure and maintained their
integrity for approximately one year. NVGLT, NVMLE and NVTTA, 1:1 molar ratio co-crystals were identified by
FTIR. The C=O stretching frequency of the carboxylic acid groups of NV and GLT were observed at 1638.15 cm-1
and 1719.23 cm-1 in the NVGLT co-crystal which corresponded with spectra of NVMLE and NVTTA. In NVMLE the
C=O stretching frequency of the C=O of NV and MLE were observed at 1640.58 cm-1 and 1694.10 cm-1 and in
NVTTA it was at 1637.25 cm-1 and 1708.50 cm-1, suggesting the presence of both parent molecules in the new
phase for NVGLT, NVMLE and NVTTA.
Dissolution studies suggested that NVGLT was the only co-crystal that yielded better results than both NV and its
physical mixture. The antiviral activity of the NVSC (an NV co-crystal prepared with saccharin) and NVSLI cocrystals
in DMSO was significantly different to pure NV, demonstrating an improvement in anti-viral activity
A case study of professional role transition for occupational therapists in specialised education in post-apartheid South Africa : a critical narrative perspective
Background: This study is a critical description and explanation of the situated nature of the professional role transition process experienced by occupational therapists working in specialised education in post-apartheid South Africa. The study posed the research question: How do occupational therapists experience the process of professional role transition within specialised education in the Western Cape? The study was framed conceptually within critical social theory and occupational science. Aim: The study aimed to describe and analyse a single instrumental case of professional role transition experienced by five occupational therapists currently working at special school resource centres in two education districts in the Western Cape, South Africa Objectives: The objectives of the study were to: Describe and explain the process of professional role transition as experienced by occupational therapists along a trajectory from 1994 to 2013; Provide insights into the occupational therapists' perceptions, thoughts, feelings and attitudes on their professional role transition experience; Determine whether there are any role changes present and the possible impact this might have on the role and scope and development of occupational therapy practice within specialised education; and Outline the influences the socio political context has on the role of occupational therapists working in special school resource centres in the Western Cape
The impact of the South African Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme on South African communities: A case study
South Africa is one of the most unequal societies in the world with vast differences in socioeconomic conditions. At the same time its carbon emissions are the highest on the continent. Recognising the need to both reduce poverty and inequality and carbon emissions, the South African government introduced the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP). The REIPPPP is a competitive bidding scheme and once independent power producers (IPPs) are appointed as preferred bidders a nonnegotiable, standardised and rand (ZAR)-dominated 20-year power purchase agreement is signed with the national energy producer, Eskom. In order to qualify, project companies must commit to certain economic and socio-economic development criteria within their host communities. The inclusion of this requirement is meant to uplift the quality of life in the host communities. The objectives of this study included exploring the socio-economic benefits of the REIPPPP using the SlimSun Swartland Solar Park (SlimSun) project in the Swartland Municipality as a case study. This study was thus exploratory in nature and qualitative research techniques were used. The sample population was derived through convenience sampling and data was collected via interviews with the project company, a local NGO, the municipality and the local community trust. From the thematic analysis, community trust; education; food, nutrition and healthcare; and upliftment and dignity were identified as the socio-economic development benefits which the host community derived from the REIPPPP. In investigating the experience and perceptions of community members with SlimSun, a key theme that emerged was the importance of trust between stakeholders and how strong community relationships, including with local government, helps in identifying initiatives that address the needs of the community. While this study cannot make generalisations, based on the findings, the researcher would recommend that the REIPPPP Office considers providing guidelines to the REIPPPP projects that working with local governments and NGOs may help to create lasting benefits to host communities
Contact, Crossover, Continuity: The Emergence and Development of the Two Basic Lace Techniques
According to the present understanding of the term, lace is a soft pliable fabric, most often white, with a pattern composed of solid and open areas, made either with a needle and thread in a looped structure or with a variable number of threads wound on bobbins and interlaced in a form of braiding. Laces matching that description survive from the mid 17th century onward, with some needle and bobbin-made examples that at first glance appear indistinguishable. Yet each of these totally unrelated techniques has its own history. The purpose of our project is to trace how it happened that two such different techniques came to be used to make products that superficially seem identical.
What were the external circumstances that, during the 16th and early 17th centuries, stimulated this development, and why were only two of a wide variety of techniques—sprang, needle-looping, macrame, etc.—able to make the technical and stylistic transition into a new form of fabric? We want to examine how these two particular and quite different techniques came into contact, how the exchange or crossover of stylistic ideas influenced them technically, and how they reached a point from which they were to progress together in continual response to the same outside demands.
Given the amount of information we are uncovering, this paper can only be a summary of work in progress but, to give some idea of the sort of detail that is emerging, we shall concentrate on bobbin lace—the older of our two techniques—and on the information contained in the mid 16th century pattern books devoted to it. Even here, we can only occasionally indicate how the contents of pattern books and the development of bobbin techniques reflect preoccupations of the day, how they relate to other techniques and forms of decorative art and, in particular, how they relate to cutwork, the forerunner of needle lace
Medicine therapy management for diabetic club Patients at a primary health care clinic: exploring a Potential role for pharmacists
Magister Pharmaceuticae - MPharmDiabetes mellitus is a complex chronic condition and has become a major public
health concern worldwide. Many diabetic patients are accessing primary health care
(PHC) clinics for diabetes care. Diabetic patients who are considered stable are
referred to chronic diseases of lifestyle club at the PHC facility. Effective
management of this chronic condition requires a multidisciplinary team approach to
diabetes care. Pharmacists are not often included in a multidisciplinary team and
would consist of doctors, nurses and dieticians. Teams may be expanded and
require specialist healthcare members’ expertise who can assist in the management
of this disease, for example, ophthalmologists and podiatrists. Adherence to
standard treatment guidelines (STGs) for the management of diabetes by healthcare
professionals at a primary care level can improve glycemic control, decrease health
costs and reduce the development of long-term diabetic complications
An overview of the effectiveness of employment legislation in protecting people with disabilities against discrimination in the South African workplace
Magister Legum - LLMThe South African apartheid regime brought about many injustices. These
injustices were mostly directed at people of colour, women and people with
disabilities. People with disabilities were neglected, discriminated against and
largely marginalised.1 A person is considered as having a disability in terms of
the Code of Good Practice on the Key Aspects on the Employment of Persons with
Disabilities,2 if they have a physical or mental impairment, which is a long term
or recurring impairment and which significantly limits their prospects of entry
into or any advancement within the workplace
