Near-infrared observations of galaxies in Pisces-Perseus: I. H-band surface photometry of 174 spirals
We present near-infrared, H-band (1.65 um), surface photometry of 174 spiral
galaxies in the area of the Pisces-Perseus supercluster. The images, acquired
with the ARNICA camera mounted on various telescopes, are used to derive radial
profiles of surface brightness, ellipticities, and position angles, together
with global parameters such as H-band magnitudes and diameters. The mean
relation between H-band isophotal diameter D_{21.5} and the B-band D_{25}
implies a B-H color of the outer disk bluer than 3.5; moreover, D_{21.5}/D_{25}
depends on (global) color and absolute luminosity. The correlations among the
various photometric parameters suggest a ratio between isophotal radius
D_{21.5}/2 and disk scale length of about 3.5 and a mean disk central
brightness of 17.5 H-mag arcsec^{-2}. We confirm the trend of the concentration
index C_{31} with absolute luminosity and, to a lesser degree, with
morphological type. We also assess the influence of non-axisymmetric structures

Signatures of Galaxy-Cluster Interactions: Spiral Galaxy Rotation Curve Asymmetry, Shape, and Extent
The environmental dependencies of the characteristics of spiral galaxy
rotation curves are studied in this work. We use our large, homogeneously
collected sample of 510 cluster spiral galaxy rotation curves to test the claim
that the shape of a galaxy's rotation curve strongly depends on its location
within the cluster, and thus presumably on the strength of the local
intracluster medium and on the frequency and strength of tidal interactions
with the cluster and cluster galaxies. Our data do not corroborate such a
scenario, consistent with the fact that Tully-Fisher residuals are independent
of galaxy location within the cluster; while the average late-type spiral
galaxy shows more rise in the outer parts of its rotation curve than does the
typical early-type spiral galaxy, there is no apparent trend for either subset
with cluster environment. We also investigate as a function of cluster
environment rotation curve asymmetry and the radial distribution of H II region
tracers within galactic disks. Mild trends with projected cluster-centric
distance are observed: (i) the (normalized) radial extent of optical line
emission averaged over all spiral galaxy types shows a 4%+/-2% increase per Mpc
of galaxy-cluster core separation, and (ii) rotation curve asymmetry falls by a
factor of two between the inner and outer cluster for early-type spirals (a
negligible decrease is found for late-type spirals). Such trends are consistent
with spiral disk perturbations or even the stripping of the diffuse, outermost
gaseous regions within the disks as galaxies pass through the dense cluster

VIP: An Experiment to Search for a Violation of the Pauli Exclusion Principle
The Pauli Exclusion Principle is a basic principle of Quantum Mechanics, and
its validity has never been seriously challenged. However, given its
fundamental standing, it is very important to check it as thoroughly as
possible. Here we describe the VIP (VIolation of the Pauli exclusion principle)
experiment, an improved version of the Ramberg and Snow experiment (E. Ramberg
and G. Snow, {\it Phys. Lett. B} {\bf 238}, 438 (1990)); VIP has just completed
the installation at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory, and aims to test the
Pauli Exclusion Principle for electrons with unprecedented accuracy, down to
. We report preliminary experimental

Transcriptome analysis of Taenia solium cysticerci using Open reading Frame ESTS (ORESTES)
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Human infection by the pork tapeworm <it>Taenia solium </it>affects more than 50 million people worldwide, particularly in underdeveloped and developing countries. Cysticercosis which arises from larval encystation can be life threatening and difficult to treat. Here, we investigate for the first time the transcriptome of the clinically relevant cysticerci larval form.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Using Expressed Sequence Tags (ESTs) produced by the ORESTES method, a total of 1,520 high quality ESTs were generated from 20 ORESTES cDNA mini-libraries and its analysis revealed fragments of genes with promising applications including 51 ESTs matching antigens previously described in other species, as well as 113 sequences representing proteins with potential extracellular localization, with obvious applications for immune-diagnosis or vaccine development.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The set of sequences described here will contribute to deciphering the expression profile of this important parasite and will be informative for the genome assembly and annotation, as well as for studies of intra- and inter-specific sequence variability. Genes of interest for developing new diagnostic and therapeutic tools are described and discussed.</p
High sensitivity tests of the Pauli Exclusion Principle with VIP2
The Pauli Exclusion Principle is one of the most fundamental rules of nature
and represents a pillar of modern physics. According to many observations the
Pauli Exclusion Principle must be extremely well fulfilled. Nevertheless,
numerous experimental investigations were performed to search for a small
violation of this principle. The VIP experiment at the Gran Sasso underground
laboratory searched for Pauli-forbidden X-ray transitions in copper atoms using
the Ramberg-Snow method and obtained the best limit so far. The follow-up
experiment VIP2 is designed to reach even higher sensitivity. It aims to
improve the limit by VIP by orders of magnitude. The experimental method,
comparison of different PEP tests based on different assumptions and the

M/L, H-alpha Rotation Curves, and HI Measurements for 329 Nearby Cluster and Field Spirals: II. Evidence for Galaxy Infall
We have conducted a study of optical and HI properties of spiral galaxies
(size, luminosity, H-alpha flux distribution, circular velocity, HI gas mass)
to explore the role of gas stripping as a driver of morphological evolution in
clusters. We find a strong correlation between the spiral and S0 fractions
within clusters, and the spiral fraction scales tightly with cluster X-ray gas
luminosity. We explore young star formation and identify spirals that are (1)
asymmetric, with truncated H-alpha emission and HI gas reservoirs on the
leading edge of the disk, on a first pass through the dense intracluster medium
in the cores of rich clusters; (2) strongly HI deficient and stripped, with
star formation confined to the inner 5 kpc/h and 3 disk scale lengths; (3)
reddened, extremely HI deficient and quenched, where star formation has been
halted across the entire disk. We propose that these spirals are in successive
stages of morphological transformation, between infalling field spirals and
cluster S0s, and that the process which acts to remove the HI gas reservoir
suppresses new star formation on a similarly fast timescale. These data suggest
that gas stripping plays a significant role in morphological transformation and

New experimental limit on Pauli Exclusion Principle violation by electrons (the VIP experiment)
The Pauli exclusion principle (PEP) represents one of the basic principles of
modern physics and, even if there are no compelling reasons to doubt its
validity, it still spurs a lively debate, because an intuitive, elementary
explanation is still missing, and because of its unique stand among the basic
symmetries of physics. A new limit on the probability that PEP is violated by
electrons was estabilished by the VIP (VIolation of the Pauli exclusion
principle) Collaboration, using the method of searching for PEP forbidden
atomic transitions in copper. The preliminary value, {1/2}\beta^{2} \textless
4.5\times 10^{-28}, represents an improvement of about two orders of magnitude
of the previous limit. The goal of VIP is to push this limit at the level of

Searches for the Violation of Pauli Exclusion Principle at LNGS in VIP(-2) experiment
The VIP (Violation of Pauli exclusion principle) experiment and its follow-up
experiment VIP-2 at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) search for
X-rays from Cu atomic states that are prohibited by the Pauli Exclusion
Principle (PEP). The candidate events, if they exist, will originate from the
transition of a orbit electron to the ground state which is already
occupied by two electrons. The present limit on the probability for PEP
violation for electron is 4.7 set by the VIP experiment. With
upgraded detectors for high precision X-ray spectroscopy, the VIP-2 experiment
