Equations of Motion in a Rotating Noninertial Reference Frame

    Get PDF
Measurement is an essential part of empirical research. As such, understanding whether the frame of reference in which a measurement occurs is inertial is essential for accurate data. As a rotating sphere, Earth is a non-inertial frame of reference and gives rise to fictitious forces. These forces are derived through vector algebra and further solved through matrix differential equations. The final solution for how velocity evolves over time results in sinusoidal functions with a period of 24 hours for Earth. To test the equations further, rational scenarios are proposed for different locations on the surface of Earth involving different initial velocities, resulting in expected behavior. It is also important to demonstrate that the complete set of solutions collapse into basic kinematic equations for an inertial frame of reference under gravity when rotation of the system is absent. When rebels turn protesters: demobilized insurgents and social uprisings in Colombia

Following civil conflict peace agreements, societies often continue to experience political volatility. Cleavages that provided reasons for some society segments to seek armed action may still exist, and violence might have increased political polarization. Consequently, peace process societies often face diverse expressions of discontent, including mass protests. This raises the question of if and how demobilized armed group members behave in such protests. Are they willing to participate and use protests as a new form to articulate their interests and political demands? What implications does their participation have for protest dynamics and political stability? How does the rest of society react to such protest participation? This thesis explores these questions by examining the participation of demobilized members of the FARC guerrilla group in Colombia during mass protest waves following the country's 2016 peace agreement. The thesis contains three research articles. Article 1 is theory-testing and explores through qualitative field research in Colombia, including 94 interviews, to which extent existing social movement theories explain variations in former rebels' participation during mass protests, finding that existing links to protesting communities, integration into networks of former comrades, and perceived security risks had the most influence on former rebels' mobilization decision. Building upon the same 94 interviews, Article 2 is theory-building and examines the implications of former FARC rebels' protest participation, finding that their involvement reduced violence levels, enhanced their societal reintegration, and led to a professionalization of the protests. Finally, Article 3 provides an online survey experiment to assess how the protest participation of former FARC members and alleged links to vandalism alter public opinion, finding that former rebels' involvement reduces public support for protests but that vandalism weighs heavier. The analyses speak to the social movement and demobilized rebel literature and highlight the benefits of bridging these two literature streams

Early and Middle Holocene Hunter-Gatherer Occupations in Western Amazonia: The Hidden Shell Middens

We report on previously unknown early archaeological sites in the Bolivian lowlands, demonstrating for the first time early and middle Holocene human presence in western Amazonia. Multidisciplinary research in forest islands situated in seasonally-inundated savannahs has revealed stratified shell middens produced by human foragers as early as 10,000 years ago, making them the oldest archaeological sites in the region. The absence of stone resources and partial burial by recent alluvial sediments has meant that these kinds of deposits have, until now, remained unidentified. We conducted core sampling, archaeological excavations and an interdisciplinary study of the stratigraphy and recovered materials from three shell midden mounds. Based on multiple lines of evidence, including radiocarbon dating, sedimentary proxies (elements, steroids and black carbon), micromorphology and faunal analysis, we demonstrate the anthropogenic origin and antiquity of these sites. In a tropical and geomorphologically active landscape often considered challenging both for early human occupation and for the preservation of hunter-gatherer sites, the newly discovered shell middens provide evidence for early to middle Holocene occupation and illustrate the potential for identifying and interpreting early open-air archaeological sites in western Amazonia. The existence of early hunter-gatherer sites in the Bolivian lowlands sheds new light on the region's past and offers a new context within which the late Holocene "Earthmovers" of the Llanos de Moxos could have emerged. © 2013 Lombardo et al

Kognitiv-psychoedukative Gruppenintervention bei stationären Patienten mit depressiven Erkrankungen – Ergebnisse einer prospektiven Pilotstudie

Background: Psychoeducational interventions that provide disorder-related information in a goal-oriented and structured manner have been integrated in psychiatric and psychotherapeutic approaches. The present cognitive psychoeducational group programme for inpatients with affective disorders is based on a multidimensional functional illness concept which covers aspects of vulnerability, stressors and coping strategies. It covers information about the disorder and its treatment options, building up rewarding activities, cognitive restructuring and relapse prevention. Materials und Methods: This programme was developed and modified at the University of Munich, Department of Psychiatry (LMU). A feasibility study was set up in a follow-up single group design and analyses of variance (ANOVAs) were performed. A total of 231 patients participated in 46 groups. Results: 125 patients evaluated the effectiveness of the programme and its treatment strategies. The group programme was widely accepted among patients that were pharmacologically and psychotherapeutically treated: more than three quarters of the patients rated its contents to be informative, helpful and applicable to everyday living. Conclusions: Inpatients with affective disorders may already benefit from a structured group programme if it takes into account their cognitive and motivational deficits. The group leaders' didactic and psychotherapeutic strategies as well as the patients' exchanging ideas with each other play a central role. In the course of further investigations the programme was differentiated for patients with major depression or bipolar disorders

An improved algorithm to test copositivity

    Get PDF
Copositivity plays a role in combinatorial and nonconvex quadratic optimization. However, testing copositivity of a given matrix is a co-NP-complete problem. We improve a previously given branch-and-bound type algorithm for testing copositivity and discuss its behavior in particular for the maximum clique problem. Numerical experiments indicate that the speedup is considerable.</p
