Qualitative Reachability for Open Interval Markov Chains
Interval Markov chains extend classical Markov chains with the possibility to
describe transition probabilities using intervals, rather than exact values.
While the standard formulation of interval Markov chains features closed
intervals, previous work has considered also open interval Markov chains, in
which the intervals can also be open or half-open. In this paper we focus on
qualitative reachability problems for open interval Markov chains, which
consider whether the optimal (maximum or minimum) probability with which a
certain set of states can be reached is equal to 0 or 1. We present
polynomial-time algorithms for these problems for both of the standard
semantics of interval Markov chains. Our methods do not rely on the closure of
open intervals, in contrast to previous approaches for open interval Markov
chains, and can characterise situations in which probability 0 or 1 can be
attained not exactly but arbitrarily closely.Comment: Full version of a paper published at RP 201

Vacuum phototriodes for the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter endcap
The measurement of scintillation light from the lead tungstate crystals of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) poses a substantial technical challenge, particularly in the endcap regions, where the radiation levels are highest. The photodetectors must be fast, sensitive, radiationhard, and operate with significant internal gain in a magnetic field of 4 Tesla. Being Healthy: a Grounded Theory Study of Help Seeking Behaviour among Chinese Elders living in the UK
The health of older people is a priority in many countries as the world’s population ages. Attitudes towards help seeking behaviours in older people remain a largely unexplored field of research. This is particularly true for older minority groups where the place that they have migrated to presents both cultural and structural challenges. The UK, like other countries,has an increasingly aging Chinese population about who relatively little is known. This study used a qualitative grounded
theory design following the approach of Glaser (1978). Qualitative data were collected using semi-structured interviews with 33 Chinese elders who were aged between 60 and 84, using purposive and theoretical sampling approaches. Data were analysed using the constant comparative method until data saturation occurred and a substantive theory was generated. ‘Being healthy’ (the core category) with four interrelated categories: self-management, normalizing/minimizing, access to health services, and being cured form the theory. The theory was generated around the core explanations provided by
participants and Chinese elders’ concerns about health issues they face in their daily life. We also present data about how they direct their health-related activities towards meeting their physical and psychological goals of being healthy. Their differential understanding of diseases and a lack of information about health services were potent predictors of non�help seeking and ‘self’ rather than medical management of their illnesses. This study highlights the need for intervention and health support for Chinese elders
Common mental disorders and ethnicity in England : the EMPIRIC Study
Background. There is little population-based evidence on ethnic variation in the most common
mental disorders (CMD), anxiety and depression. We compared the prevalence of CMD among
representative samples of White, Irish, Black Caribbean, Bangladeshi, Indian and Pakistani
individuals living in England using a standardized clinical interview.
Method. Cross-sectional survey of 4281 adults aged 16–74 years living in private households
in England. CMD were assessed using the Revised Clinical Interview Schedule (CIS-R), a standardized
clinical interview.
Results. Ethnic differences in the prevalence of CMD were modest, and some variation with age
and sex was noted. Compared to White counterparts, the prevalence of CMD was higher to a
statistically significant degree among Irish [adjusted rate ratios (RR) 2.09, 95% CI 1.16–2.95,
p=0.02] and Pakistani (adjusted RR 2.38, 95% CI 1.25–3.53, p=0.02) men aged 35–54 years, even
after adjusting for differences in socio-economic status. Higher rates of CMD were also observed
among Indian and Pakistani women aged 55–74 years, compared to White women of similar age.
The prevalence of CMD among Bangladeshi women was lower than among White women,
although this was restricted to those not interviewed in English. There were no differences in rates
between Black Caribbean and White samples.
Conclusions. Middle-aged Irish and Pakistani men, and older Indian and Pakistani women, had
significantly higher rates of CMD than their White counterparts. The very low prevalence of CMD
among Bangladeshi women contrasted with high levels of socio-economic deprivation among this
group. Further study is needed to explore reasons for this variation
Access to interpreting services in England: secondary analysis of national data
Background:
Overcoming language barriers to health care is a global challenge. There is great linguistic diversity in the major cities in the UK with more than 300 languages, excluding dialects, spoken by children in London alone. However, there is dearth of data on the number of non-English speakers for planning effective interpreting services. The aim was to estimate the number of people requiring language support amongst the minority ethnic communities in England.
Methods:
Secondary analysis of national representative sample of subjects recruited to the Health Surveys for England 1999 and 2004.
Results:
298,432 individuals from the four main minority ethnic communities (Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Chinese) who may be unable to communicate effectively with a health professional. This represents 2,520,885 general practice consultations per year where interpreting services might be required.
Conclusion:
Effective interpreting services are required to improve access and health outcomes of non-English speakers and thereby facilitate a reduction in health inequalities
Autistic girls and school exclusion: perspectives of students and their parents
BACKGROUND AND AIMS:
If a child’s behaviour does not conform to school policy or causes harm to either peers or staff, they may be temporarily or permanently excluded from school. Whilst it is unlawful to exclude children due to their needs, school exclusion is common amongst children with special educational needs, including autism. Currently, little is known about experiences of school exclusion from the perspectives of autistic students and/or their parents. This is particularly the case for girls on the autism spectrum.
METHODS:
Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight autistic girls and their parents (seven mothers, one father). Interviews explored experiences of mainstream schooling; alternative educational provisions that were offered (if any); the school exclusion process; and the girls’ current educational provision. As well as asking the girls and their parents about positive and negative aspects of their past and current experiences, participants were asked to reflect on areas for potential improvements.
RESULTS:
Interviews were analysed using thematic analysis and three key themes emerged from the data: inappropriate school environments (including problems with the sensory environment, difficulties when placed with inappropriate peers and general pressures of mainstream classrooms), tensions in school relationships (including problems with staff and peers, alongside a general lack of communication), and problems with staff responses (including a perceived lack of understanding of the girls’ needs and a lack of appropriate support being provided, resulting in ‘battles’ between parents and schools).
CONCLUSIONS:
The themes and subthemes that emerged from the interviews were not unique to autistic girls. Indeed, issues such as inappropriate school environments, a lack of staff understanding and breakdowns in relationships have been repeatedly raised by parents and young autistic people (mostly boys) in other studies, albeit in different environments. Nevertheless, the results highlight that more needs to be done to positively influence the direction of the girls’ educational journeys.
IMPLICATIONS:
To improve the inclusion of autistic girls, it is recommended that educational establishments be proactive in developing inclusive environments, build positive relationships (both in and outside of the classroom) and, if exclusion is unavoidable, better support students both before and after the process
