completion of the Friedmann equations
In string theory the closed-string massless NS-NS sector forms a multiplet of
symmetry. This suggests a specific modification to General
Relativity in which the entire NS-NS sector is promoted to stringy graviton
fields. Imposing off-shell symmetry fixes the correct
couplings to other matter fields and the Einstein field equations are enriched
to comprise components, dubbed recently as the Einstein Double Field
Equations. Here we explore the cosmological implications of this framework. We
derive the most general homogeneous and isotropic ansatzes for both stringy
graviton fields and the -covariant energy-momentum tensor.
Crucially, the former admits space-filling magnetic -flux. Substituting them
into the Einstein Double Field Equations, we obtain the
completion of the Friedmann equations along with a generalized continuity
equation. We discuss how solutions in this framework may be characterized by
two equation-of-state parameters, and , where the latter
characterizes the relative intensities of scalar and tensor forces. When
, the dilaton remains constant throughout the cosmological
evolution, and one recovers the standard Friedmann equations for generic matter
content (i.e. for any ). We further point out that, in contrast to General
Relativity, neither an -symmetric cosmological constant nor a
scalar field with positive energy density gives rise to a de Sitter solution.Comment: v2: 31 + 13 pages; 1 figure. References added; abstract amended;

Dryland Wheat variety selection in the Texas High Plain
Selecting the best wheat varieties affects producers’ profit and financial risk. This study identifies the optimal wheat variety selection using the portfolio approach at various risk aversion levels. Results showed that the optimal wheat variety selection was significantly affected by changes in levels of risk aversion of decision makersDryland, Portfolio, risk, wheat Variety, Farm Management,

Six case histories of second language acquirers were examined to attempt to determine what factors play a role in developing a long-term pleasure reading habit in a second language (English). The cases provided support for several hypotheses: Long-term readers are first stimulated to read through a pleasant reading experience, they have access to books and time and a place (or places) to read, they select their own reading material, feel free to stay with certain authors and genres if they want to, and do not profit from tests, workbook exercises and incentives. If these hypotheses are confirmed in future studies, we can conclude that school does not provide the conditions that help develop long-term pleasure reading
Yang-Mills theory in Landau gauge as a liquid crystal
Using a spin-charge separation of the gluon field in the Landau gauge we show
that the SU(2) Yang-Mills theory in the low-temperature phase can be considered
as a nematic liquid crystal. The ground state of the nematic crystal is
characterized by the A^2 condensate of the gluon field. The liquid crystal
possesses various topological defects (instantons, monopoles and vortices)
which are suggested to play a role in non-perturbative features of the theory.Comment: 9 pages, no figure
Elastic Cross Sections for Electron Collisions with Molecules Relevant to Plasma Processing
Absolute electron-impact cross sections for molecular targets, including their radicals, are important in developing plasma reactors and testing various plasma processing gases. Low-energy electron collision data for these gases are sparse and only the limited cross section data are available. In this report, elastic cross sections for electron-polyatomic molecule collisions are compiled and reviewed for 17molecules relevant to plasma processing. Elastic cross sections are essential for the absolute scale conversion of inelastic cross sections, as well as for testing computational methods. Data are collected and reviewed for elastic differential, integral, and momentum transfer cross sections and, for each molecule, the recommended values of the cross section are presented. The literature has been surveyed through early 2010.This work is accomplished as a collaboration through APAN (Asia-Pacific Atomic Data Network: a network for dissemination of collisional data relevant to plasmas, discharges, materials, and biosciences). Reading In English By Children In Korea: Frequency, Effectiveness, And Barriers
A study of the English non-textbook reading of fourth graders in Korea revealed that about 80% had done at least some reading, confirming that there is enthusiasm for English reading. About half, however, had read only five books or fewer. Non-readers said that the reason they did not read in English was the difficulty of English texts. Those who read more did better on a test of English spelling and vocabulary
