Digital Signal Processing Education: Technology and Tradition
In this paper we discuss a DSP course presented to both University students and to participants on industrial short courses. The "traditional" DSP course will typically run over one to two semesters and usually cover the fundamental mathematics of z-, Laplace and Fourier transforms, followed by the algorithm and application detail. In the course we will discuss, the use of advanced DSP software and integrated support software allow the presentation time to be greatly shortened and more focussed algorithm and application learning to be introduced. By combining the traditional lecture with the use of advanced DSP software, all harnessed by the web, we report on the objectives, syllabus, and mode of teaching

Small portable, high intensity isotopic neutron source combines twelve curium-americium beryllium sources. This high intensity of neutrons, with a flux which slowly decreases at a known rate, provides for increased experimental accuracy
The Marysville, Montana Geothermal Project
Drilling the first geothermal well in Montana presented many challenges, not only in securing materials and planning strategies for drilling the wildcat well but also in addressing the environmental, legal, and institutional issues raised by the request for permission to explore a resource which lacked legal definition. The Marysville Geothermal Project was to investigate a dry hot rock heat anomaly. The well was drilled to a total depth of 6790 feet and many fractured water bearing zones were encountered below 1800 feet
A simplex-like search method for bi-objective optimization
We describe a new algorithm for bi-objective optimization, similar to the Nelder Mead simplex
algorithm, widely used for single objective optimization. For diferentiable bi-objective functions on
a continuous search space, internal Pareto optima occur where the two gradient vectors point in
opposite directions. So such optima may be located by minimizing the cosine of the angle between
these vectors. This requires a complex rather than a simplex, so we term the technique the \cosine
seeking complex". An extra beneft of this approach is that a successful search identifes the direction
of the effcient curve of Pareto points, expediting further searches. Results are presented for some
standard test functions. The method presented is quite complicated and space considerations here
preclude complete details. We hope to publish a fuller description in another place

System consists of movable auxiliary aerodynamic sensors mounted on fuselage and connected to trailing-edge flaps by rigid mechanical linkages. System achieves alleviation by reducing lift-curve slope of airplane to such a small value that gust-induced angles of attack will result in small changes in lift

Modulated infrared radiant source
A modulated, infrared radiant energy source was developed to calibrate an airborne nadir-viewing pressure modulated radiometer to be used to detect from Earth orbit trace gases in the troposphere. The technique used an 8 cm long, 0.005 cm diameter platinum-iridium wire as an isothermal, thin line radiant energy source maintained at 1200 K. A + or - 20 K signal, oscillating at controllable frequencies from dc to 20 Hz, was superimposed on it. This periodic variation of the line source energy was used to verify the pressure modulated radiometer's capability to distinguish between the signal variations caused by the Earth's background surface and the signal from the atmospheric gases of interest
