In this paper I intend to focus some characteristics of the contemporary world and the possible interferences on the occurred changes in the familiar group and on the process of individualization of present youth. My reflections on the theme search bedding in the sociological theory, rescuing Max Weber’s thought, one of the great classics of sociology. Its analysis on the modern rationality and the social action as central object of sociology is the starting point of the construction of this work that searches to intercross the Weber’s ideas with the current scene where we live. In such way, I describe briefly some contemporaries’ specificities, I locate youth and family, using an original study on a possible Weber’s theory of family and I try to interlace the classic thought in those scopes.

A novel flow cytometric protocol for assessment of yeast cell adhesion

Microbial adhesion is a field of recognized relevance and, as such, an impressive array of tools has been developed to understand its molecular mechanisms and ultimately for its quantification. Some of the major limitations found within these methodologies concern the incubation time, the small number of cells analyzed, and the operator's subjectivity. To overcome these aspects, we have developed a quantitative method to measure yeast cells' adhesion through flow cytometry. In this methodology, a suspension of yeast cells is mixed with green fluorescent polystyrene microspheres (uncoated or coated with host proteins). Within 2 h, an adhesion profile is obtained based on two parameters: percentage and cells-microsphere population's distribution pattern. This flow cytometry protocol represents a useful tool to quantify yeast adhesion to different substrata in a large scale, providing manifold data in a speedy and informative manner

The technology that created the boom in online shopping has turned the local thrift store into a mainstream phenomenon. Customers of the future will look for ways to recycle, resell or upcycle, and will be drawn to the incredible value of buying secondhand, with millennials and Gen Z adopting second hand faster than other age groups. This will have a significant positive impact on global sustainability, as the fashion industry produces 10% of all carbon emissions, is the second-largest consumer of the world’s water supply, and pollutes oceans with microplastics. The clothing industry follows oil as the second largest industrial polluter. In the US, consumer trends indicate that shoppers who don’t want to be seen in the same outfit twice have resulted consumers’ buying 60% more clothing today than they did 15 years ago, but keep the items only half as long. In Europe, clothing resale has brought the conversation of ethical buying back into the spotlight. Globally, the fashion resale and rental market is exploding, growing 21 times faster than the retail market over the past three years. The objective of this study is to better understand consumer attitudes and behaviors with regard to the apparel resale economy

Agents of Change - Continuing a Legacy

Students throughout their academic journeys become agents of change when they experience transformational learning. The students at Molloy College in conjunction with local non-profits have partnered to advance society with their field research. While the mission is fascinating for the assigned non-profit, what is truly amazing is how the capstone course shapes our students to become good citizens in our society. There are overarching rewards for all parties involved whether it be the students, faculty, members of the non-profit, and our community at large. Three consulting teams are created to address the most relatable charges to the assigned non-profit. However, what is truly happening behind the scenes is our students search for truth through their research while positively impacting this organization. If guided successfully, the three consulting teams actually build off of one another’s charges creating causational marketing plans that will assist the Board of this non-profit sustain incremental growth over time. These turnkey recommendations that are presented not only help to build the Foundation where future research could develop, but allows the students to become personally invested in this organization’s future. This promotes community and the building blocks of well-rounded young professionals upon graduation of their chosen degrees

Lessons learned from the microbial ecology resulting from different inoculation strategies for biogas production from waste products of the bioethanol/sugar industry

BACKGROUND: During strategic planning of a biogas plant, the local availability of resources for start-up and operation should be taken into consideration for a cost-efficient process. Because most bioethanol/sugar industries in Brazil are located in remote areas, the use of fresh cattle manure from local farms could be a solution for the inoculation of the biogas process. This study investigated the diversity and dynamics of bacterial and archaeal communities and the performance of biogas reactors inoculated with manure and a mixed inoculum from different biogas reactors as for a controlled start-up until steady state. RESULTS: Laboratory-scale biogas reactors were fed semi-continuously with sugarcane filter cake alone (mono-digestion) or together with bagasse (co-digestion). At the initial start-up, the reactors inoculated with the mixed inoculum displayed a less diverse taxonomic composition, but with higher presence of significant abundances compared to reactors inoculated with manure. However, in the final steady state, the communities of the differently inoculated reactors were very similarly characterized by predominance of the methanogenic genera Methanosarcina and Methanobacterium, the bacterial families Bacteroidaceae, Prevotellaceae and Porphyromonadaceae (phylum Bacteroidetes) and Synergistaceae (phylum Synergistetes). In the mono-digestion reactors, the methanogenic communities varied greater than in the co-digestion reactors independently of the inoculation strategy. CONCLUSION: The microbial communities involved in the biogas production from waste products of the Brazilian bioethanol/sugar industry were relatively similar and stable at the reactor’s steady phase independently of the inoculum source (manure or mixed inoculum). Therefore, the locally available manure can be used as inoculum for start-up of the biogas process, since it also contains the microbial resources needed. The strong fluctuation of methanogenic communities in mono-digestion reactors indicates higher risk of process instability than in co-digestion reactors.
