Fenchel-Nielsen Coordinates for Maximal Representations

We develop Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates for representations of surface groups into Sp(2n,R) with maximal Toledo invariant. Analogous to classical Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates on the Teichm\"uller space they consist of a parametrization of representations of the fundamental group of a pair of pants and a careful investigation of the gluing. As applications we obtain results for non-closed surfaces, which have been known only for closed surfaces before: we count the number of connected components of their representation space and prove continuity for the limit curve for a certain type of representations

Le pastiche à l’épreuve du manuscrit Paris, BnF fr. 146 : le dépit amoureux de Fauvel

Le cheval Fauvel, synthèse des Vices, s’est lancé dans une aventure insensée : demander la main de Fortune, qui le repousse brutalement et l’agonit de sarcasmes. La version du Roman de Fauvel contenue dans le manuscrit Bnf fr. 146 place à ce moment-clef du poème réécrit à partir de Gervais du Bus une longue interpolation de plus de 700 vers, qui amplifie le dépit amoureux du soupirant éconduit. Même si ce n’est pas, littéralement, l’âne à la lyre, la situation paraît idéale pour identifier les traces du pastiche, d’autant plus que la complainte est enrichie de citations lyriques et de pièces musicales insérées. L’enjeu est de repérer les indices textuels, iconographiques et autres, les marqueurs de l’imitation décalée. On constate, en cours d’analyse, que malgré l’évidence globale, le pointage précis se heurte à de nombreuses difficultés : entre le pastiche, la parodie et la satire, la ligne de partage est malaisée à tracer, et la part subjective de l’interprétation reste irréductible.Fauvel the horse, symbol of the combined Vices, embarks on an insane adventure : to woo the hand of Dame Fortune, who brutally rebuffs him, hurling abuse and sarcasm his way. The version of the Roman de Fauvel contained in the Bnf fr. 146 manuscript inserts at this key moment of the poem, rewritten from that of Gervais du Bus, a lengthy interpolation of over 700 verses that amplify the amorous yearnings of the rejected suitor. While this is not the literal fable of the donkey and the lyre (“l’âne à la lyre”) the situation appears ideal to pinpoint traces of pastiche, especially because the lament is enriched with addition of lyrical quotations and musical pieces. The challenge is to discover the textual, iconographic, etc. indices of disjunctive imitation. In so analyzing we realize that despite the overall evidence, a precise perception is fraught with obstacles : it is difficult to discern the exact lines of demarcation between pastiche, parody and satire and the subjective aspect of interpretation prevails

L'autore analizza il problema della sopravvivenza delle comunità linguistiche minori in Europa in relazione alle dinamiche socio-economiche che tanto peso esercitano nel processo di livellamento umano e culturale attraverso soprattutto i mezzi di comunicazione di massa. Sono per ciò evidenziate una per una, le cause che in generale minano alla base le comunità linguistiche minori attraverso l'istruzione nelle scuole dell'obbligo, l'emigrazione, il turismo, i matrimoni esogamici, etc. Questo insieme di fattori tende ad accelerare il progressivo depauperamento e sostituzione della lingua minoritaria. Tuttavia l'autore indica anche una serie di iniziative volte a frenare e a invertire quello che sembra un inevitabile destino soprattulto quando la comunità minore ha come riferime nto la comunità nazionale da cui trae la propria cultura

A Comparison of Radio and X-Ray Morphologies of Four Clusters of Galaxies Containing Radio Halos

Clusters of galaxies may contain cluster-wide, centrally located, diffuse radio sources, called halos. They have been found to show morphologies similar to those of the X-ray emission. To quantify this qualitative statement we performed a point-to-point comparison of the radio and the X-ray emission for four clusters of galaxies containing radio halos: Coma, Abell 2255, Abell 2319, Abell 2744. Our study leads to a linear relation between the radio and the X-ray surface brightness in two clusters, namely Abell 2255 and Abell 2744. In Coma and A2319 the radio and the X-ray brightnesses seem to be related with a sub-linear power law. Specific tests to assess reliability of high luminosity AlInGaP LED for outdoor applications are needed. In this paper tests to propose a model involving three parameters: temperature, humidity and current have been carried out. Temperature, humidity and current accelerated model has been proposed to evaluate the reliability of this type of LED. Degradation and catastrophic failure mechanisms have been analyzed.
