Herein is presented the results of a study on the hydrometallurgic extractionand recovery of aluminum and silicon by leaching of kaolinitic clays with HF. Thestudied extraction parameters were: temperature, reaction time, solid/liquid ratio, concentration, and precipitating agent mass. In the leaching process, mineraldissolutions near 100% were obtained when working at 348 K, solid/liquid ratio2% w/v, HF 12% v/v, for 120 minutes. The HF leach liquor generated from thedissolution of kaolinitic clays contains H2SiF6 and H3AlF6. Studies were conductedto recover the two valuable fluorides as K2SiF6 and Na3AlF6 by precipitation withalkaline salts from the leach liquor. Phases of precipitated fluorides were identifiedby XRD and surface morphology by SEM. The purity of the K2SiF6 precipitate was98.8%, whereas for Na3AlF6, it was 89.3%. Also, both synthesized solids are ofhigh commercial value due to their industrial applications.Fil: Pinna, Eliana Guadalupe. Universidad Nacional de Cuyo. Nonlinear Exchange Rate Predictability

    Get PDF
We study whether the nonlinear behavior of the real exchange rate can help us account for the lack of predictability of the nominal exchange rate. We construct a smooth nonlinear error-correction model that allows us to test the hypotheses of nonlinear predictability of the nominal exchange rate and nonlinear behavior on the real exchange rate in the context of a fully specified cointegrated system. Using a panel of 19 countries and three numeraires, we find evidence of nonlinear predictability of the nominal exchange rate and of nonlinear mean reversion of the real exchange rate. Out-of-sample Theil's U-statistics show a higher forecast precision of the nonlinear model than the one obtained with a random walk specification. Although the robustness of the out-of-sample results over different forecast windows is somewhat limited, we are able to obtain significant predictability gains--from a parsimonious structural model with PPP fundamentals--even at short-run horizons.Exchange rates; Predictability; Nonlinearities; Purchasing power parity

CMOS-3D smart imager architectures for feature detection

    Get PDF
This paper reports a multi-layered smart image sensor architecture for feature extraction based on detection of interest points. The architecture is conceived for 3-D integrated circuit technologies consisting of two layers (tiers) plus memory. The top tier includes sensing and processing circuitry aimed to perform Gaussian filtering and generate Gaussian pyramids in fully concurrent way. The circuitry in this tier operates in mixed-signal domain. It embeds in-pixel correlated double sampling, a switched-capacitor network for Gaussian pyramid generation, analog memories and a comparator for in-pixel analog-to-digital conversion. This tier can be further split into two for improved resolution; one containing the sensors and another containing a capacitor per sensor plus the mixed-signal processing circuitry. Regarding the bottom tier, it embeds digital circuitry entitled for the calculation of Harris, Hessian, and difference-of-Gaussian detectors. The overall system can hence be configured by the user to detect interest points by using the algorithm out of these three better suited to practical applications. The paper describes the different kind of algorithms featured and the circuitry employed at top and bottom tiers. The Gaussian pyramid is implemented with a switched-capacitor network in less than 50 μs, outperforming more conventional solutions.Xunta de Galicia 10PXIB206037PRMinisterio de Ciencia e Innovación TEC2009-12686, IPT-2011-1625-430000Office of Naval Research N00014111031

Learning contract, co-operative and flipped learning as useful tools for studying metabolism

    Get PDF
Es el Abstract de una comunicación a un congreso internacional sobre educaciónUndergraduate students in Biology identify Metabolic Biochemistry as a particularly difficult subject. This is due to the fact that students need to interconnect properly all the contents of its syllabus throughout their study of the subject in order to get a global insight of the complex regulatory features controlling metabolic pathways within the metabolic network under different physiologic and pathologic conditions, as well as metabolism as a whole. Due to these objective difficulties, a high percentage of our students face the study of this subject as a very hard task beyond their forces and capacities. This perception leads to high rates of premature dropout. In previous years, less than 40% of all the registered students attended the examinations of Metabolic Biochemistry (a subject in the second year of the Degree of Biology at our University). Even worse, less than 25% of our students passed the exams. From the academic year 2015/16 on, we are developing innovative teaching projects (PIE15-163 and PIE17-145, funded by University of Malaga) aimed to increase our student loyalty to the subject (and hence to increase their attendance to exams) and to help them to learn more effectively metabolism and its regulation. These innovative teaching projects are based on the use of several powerful tools: a learning contract and problem-based learning within the framework of group tasks promoting an actual collaborative learning in a flipped classroom. The present communication will show the implementation of the PIE15-163 and PIE17-145 projects and some results obtained from them. This work was supported by Malaga University funds granted to the educational innovation project PIE17-145. The attendance to the END2018 International Conference on Education and New Developments (June 2018, Budapest, Hungary) has received a grant from "I Plan Propio Integral de Docencia. The maternal thyroid function during early pregnancy plays a fundamental role in foetal brain development as synthesis of thyroid hormone does not begin until the 20th week of gestation. Material and methods Throughout the year 2002, 147 women in their 37th week of pregnancy were enrolled for the study. To evaluate their thyroid function, the serum concentrations of free T4 and of TSH were determined. After birth, the psychomotor development of their children was evaluated with the Mc- Carthy scales. Results The median value of free T4 was 9.37 pmol/l, being the data obtained from more than half of the sampled women below the hypothyroxinaemia threshold. Children born from mothers with T4 levels below percentile 10 showed a significantly lower score on the general cognitive index than those whose mothers had normal free T4 serum concentrations. A positive correlation was found between the values of maternal free T4 and the general cognitive index (r 0.43; p < 0.01). Conclusions The concentrations of maternal free T4 are important, not only during the first months of pregnancy, but all along the process to ensure adequate development of the foetal brain

GOLLUM: a next-generation simulation tool for electron, thermal and spin transport

    Get PDF
We have developed an efficient simulation tool 'GOLLUM' for the computation of electrical, spin and thermal transport characteristics of complex nanostructures. The new multi-scale, multi-terminal tool addresses a number of new challenges and functionalities that have emerged in nanoscale-scale transport over the past few years. To illustrate the flexibility and functionality of GOLLUM, we present a range of demonstrator calculations encompassing charge, spin and thermal transport, corrections to density functional theory such as LDA+U and spectral adjustments, transport in the presence of non-collinear magnetism, the quantum-Hall effect, Kondo and Coulomb blockade effects, finite-voltage transport, multi-terminal transport, quantum pumps, superconducting nanostructures, environmental effects and pulling curves and conductance histograms for mechanically-controlled-break-junction experiments.Comment: 66 journal pages, 57 figure

Selected yeast strains (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) with glycolytic inefficiency and metabolic inhibitors to reduce alcoholic degree in vines from warm regions

n warm regions potential alcoholic degree and unequilibrated must, especially in acidity are real problems to be resolved. Strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae have different yields to produce ethanol from the same content of sugars. These peculiarities can be named glycolytic inefficiencies. We can select yeast strains with these properties in order to reduce the final alcoholic degree together with the production of some metabolic intermediates that can have repercussion in the sensorial profile like polyalcohols or organic acid
