    Correspondence in the December issue by Jonathan Gressel not only states that gender issues in rural settings have not been adequately addressed with respect to weed control biotech but also asserts that such technology can increase the quality of life of rural women in developing countries. Improved weed control is a labor-saving technology that can result in less employment in a labor surplus rural economy. Often in rural areas, wage income is the main source of income and an important determinant of the quality of life, particularly where employment opportunities are generally limited. Apart from soil preparation, planting and weeding, harvesting is also 'femanual' work that can generate more employment if yields are higher. Biotech can enhance the quality of life of women but only if the technology is associated with overall generation of rural employment

    Evolving turbulence and magnetic fields in galaxy clusters

    We discuss, using simple analytical models and MHD simulations, the origin and parameters of turbulence and magnetic fields in galaxy clusters. Three physically distinct regimes can be identified in the evolution of cluster turbulence and magnetic fields. Firstly, the fluctuation dynamo will produce microgauss-strong, random magnetic fields during cluster formation and major mergers. Turbulent velocity of about 300 km/s can be maintained at scales 100-200 kpc. The magnetic field is intermittent, has a smaller scale of 20-30 kpc and average strength of 2 microgauss. Secondly, when major mergers end, turbulent speed and magnetic field undergo a power-law decay, decreasing in strength but increasing in scale by a factor of about two. Thirdly, smaller-mass subclusters and cluster galaxies produce turbulent wakes, with turbulent speeds and magnetic field strengths similar to those quoted above. The velocity scales are about 200 kpc and 10 kpc respectively, and the magnetic field scale is about 6 times smaller. Although these wakes may fill only a small fraction of the cluster volume, their area covering factor can be close to unity. So one can potentially reconcile observations that indicate the coexistence of turbulence with ordered filamentary gas structures, as in the Perseus cluster. Random Faraday rotation measure is estimated to be typically 100-200 rad/m^2, in agreement with observations.     Microcytosis and possible early iron deficiency in paediatric inpatients: a retrospective audit.

    BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency anaemia is a common paediatric problem worldwide, with significant neurodevelopmental morbidity if left untreated. A decrease in the mean corpuscular volume (MCV) can be used as a surrogate marker for detecting early iron deficiency prior to definitive investigation and treatment. An audit cycle was therefore undertaken to evaluate and improve the identification, follow-up and treatment of abnormally low MCV results amongst the paediatric inpatients in an English district general hospital. METHODS: The audit cycle was performed retrospectively over two three-month periods (February to April 2006; September to November 2006), amongst patients aged between one month and 16 years that had full blood counts performed whilst admitted on the paediatric ward. Patients with at least one abnormally low MCV result were identified, and their notes reviewed. We looked for any underlying explanation for the result, adequate documentation of the result as abnormal, and instigation of follow-up or treatment. In-between the two audit periods, the results of the first audit period were presented to the medical staff and suggestions were made for improvements in documentation and follow-up of abnormal results. The z-test was used to test for equality of proportions between the two audit samples. RESULTS: Out of 701 inpatients across both audit periods that had full blood counts, 61 (8.7%) had a low MCV result. Only 15% of patients in each audit period had an identifiable explanation for their low MCV values. Amongst the remaining 85% with either potentially explicable or inexplicable results, there was a significant increase in documentation of results as abnormal from 25% to 91% of cases between the first and second audit periods (p = 0.00 using z-test). However, there was no accompanying increase in the proportion of patients who received follow-up or treatment for their abnormal results. CONCLUSION: Abnormal red cell indices that may indicate iron deficiency are frequently missed amongst paediatric inpatients. Medical staff education and the use of appropriate protocols or pathways could further improve detection and treatment rates in this setting

    A study was made of the solar neutrino data with a tank of CC14 located 4800 mwe underground for the period 1970 to 83. These observations are on the production rates of Ar37 atoms via the reaction upsilon sub e + Cl37 yields Ar37 plus e(-) in the tank caused presumably by a flux of neutrinos from the Sun. The idea of possible time variations in the data shown is discussed and an attempt is made to correlate the variations to two other phenomena of solar origin-the sunspot number and the geomagnetic Ap index

    Bilevel shared control for teleoperators

    A shared system is disclosed for robot control including integration of the human and autonomous input modalities for an improved control. Autonomously planned motion trajectories are modified by a teleoperator to track unmodelled target motions, while nominal teleoperator motions are modified through compliance to accommodate geometric errors autonomously in the latter. A hierarchical shared system intelligently shares control over a remote robot between the autonomous and teleoperative portions of an overall control system. Architecture is hierarchical, and consists of two levels. The top level represents the task level, while the bottom, the execution level. In space applications, the performance of pure teleoperation systems depend significantly on the communication time delays between the local and the remote sites. Selection/mixing matrices are provided with entries which reflect how each input's signals modality is weighted. The shared control minimizes the detrimental effects caused by these time delays between earth and space
