Control of Aphids on Spring Oats and Winter Wheat With Slow Release Granular Systemic Insecticides
Aphid infestations (Homoptera: Aphididae) on spring oat (Avena sativa) cv. \u27Ogle\u27, and during the fall on winter wheat (Triticum aestivum) cv. \u27Clark\u27, composed mainly of Rhopalosiphum padi and Macrosiphum avenae, were reduced with applications at the 2-3 leaf stage of slow release granular formulations of acephate, carbofuran, and disulfoton, compared with carbofuran 15G and untreated controls, in field trials during 1990-1991 in northwestern Indiana. These field results corroborated those obtained by previous studies with the same formulations and dosages in the laboratory.
In oat, all insecticide treatments reduced aphid populations and percent- age aphid~infested plants, with a residual action of ca. 25 d. Barley yellow dwarf virus-like visual symptoms were reduced with disulfoton. In winter wheat, the residual action of all insecticide treatments in the fall lasted up to 19 d. The carbofuran treatment on winter wheat seedlings caused earthworms to move out of the soil, where they died; an effect requirining further study. Percentage of aphid-infested plants revealed relatively Wlder differences among tratments than total number of aphids in both test crops. Predation by Coleomegilla maculata (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) contributed to the overall reduction of spring populations of cereal aphids in wheat and oat. Aphid mummies parasitized by micro-hymenopterans were common in oat plants

Modifications to the rapid melt/rapid quench and transparent polymer video furnaces for the KC-135
Given here is a summary of tasks performed on two furnace systems, the Transparent Polymer (TPF) and the Rapid Melt/Rapid Quench (RMRQ) furnaces, to be used aboard NASA's KC-135. It was determined that major changes were needed for both furnaces to operate according to the scientific investigators' experiment parameters. Discussed here are what the problems were, what was required to solve the problems, and possible future enhancements. It was determined that the enhancements would be required for the furnaces to perform at their optimal levels. Services provided include hardware and software modifications, Safety DataPackage documentation, ground based testing, transportation to and from Ellington Air Field, operation of hardware during KC-135 flights, and post-flight data processing

Measuring mathematical resilience : an application of the construct of resilience to the study of mathematics
To meet the challenge of accelerating demands for quantitative literacy in the work force,
improvements are needed in mathematics education. Student skill must be increased at all ability
levels while also reducing the achievement gap across gender, racial and ethnic groups to
increase their participation in advanced mathematics coursework and representation in
mathematics related careers (National Mathematics Advisory Panel, 2008). Research has shown
that affective traits such as motivation and attitude are linked to increased likelihood of taking
advanced mathematics courses (Ma, 2006) and are significant predictors of improved cognitive
activity and achievement (Buff, Reusser, Rakoczy,& Pauli, 2011; Ethington & Wolfe, 1986). In
addition, males generally score more favorably than females on affective variables related to
mathematics achievement and persistence (McGraw, Lubienski, & Strutchens, 2006; Sherman &
Fennema, 1977; Wilkins and Ma, 2003). Although psychological resilience has been researched
extensively (Luthar, Cicchetti, & Becker, 2000; Luthar, 2007) the study of mathematical
resilience, defined as a positive adaptive stance to mathematics which allows students to
continue learning despite adversity, represents a new approach (Johnston-Wilder & Lee, 2010;
Rivera & Waxman, 2011). Math anxiety looks at maladaptive response to learning mathematics
and is well-studied (Hembree, 1990; Richardson & Suinn, 1977; Tobias, 1978). In contrast,
resilience incorporates factors associated with optimal functioning. Although mathematical
resilience has been identified as important for success (Johnston-Wilder & Lee, 2010; Rivera &
Waxman, 2011), little consensus exists around its definition and no measures of resilience have
been rigorously developed and/or validated. Rivera & Waxman (2011) identified the use of
teacher nomination of resilient students as a limitation of their study, further motivating
development of an instrument. This presentation will report on efforts to develop and validate an
instrument measuring mathematical resilience. Ultimately, the measure will aid in developing
and testing models that gauge the role of mathematical resilience in student achievement and
persistence in advanced coursework. These models can be used to develop interventions to
improve mathematical resilience, achievement, and quantitative literacy (Johnston-Wilder &
Lee, 2010)
Inhibition of cellular protein secretion by norwalk virus nonstructural protein p22 requires a mimic of an endoplasmic reticulum export signal.
Protein trafficking between the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and Golgi apparatus is central to cellular homeostasis. ER export signals are utilized by a subset of proteins to rapidly exit the ER by direct uptake into COPII vesicles for transport to the Golgi. Norwalk virus nonstructural protein p22 contains a YXΦESDG motif that mimics a di-acidic ER export signal in both sequence and function. However, unlike normal ER export signals, the ER export signal mimic of p22 is necessary for apparent inhibition of normal COPII vesicle trafficking, which leads to Golgi disassembly and antagonism of Golgi-dependent cellular protein secretion. This is the first reported function for p22. Disassembly of the Golgi apparatus was also observed in cells replicating Norwalk virus, which may contribute to pathogenesis by interfering with cellular processes that are dependent on an intact secretory pathway. These results indicate that the ER export signal mimic is critical to the antagonistic function of p22, shown herein to be a novel antagonist of ER/Golgi trafficking. This unique and well-conserved human norovirus motif is therefore an appealing target for antiviral drug development
Development of Beluga, Delphinapterus leucas, Capture and Satellite Tagging Protocol in Cook Inlet, Alaska
Attempts to capture and place satellite tags on belugas, Delphinapterus leucas, in Cook Inlet, Alaska were conducted during late spring and summer of 1995, 1997, and 1999. In 1995, capture attempts using a hoop net proved impractical in Cook Inlet. In 1997, capture efforts focused on driving belugas into nets. Although this method had been successful in the Canadian High Arctic, it failed in Cook Inlet due to the ability of the whales to detect and avoid nets in shallow and very turbid water. In 1999, belugas were successfully captured using a gillnet encirclement technique. A satellite tag was attached to a juvenile male, which subsequently provided the first documentation of this species’ movements within Cook Inlet during the summer months (31 May–17 September)

Monotectic alloy materials are created by rapid melt/rapid solidification processing on the NASA KC-135. Separation of the uniform liquid into two liquids may occur by either of two processes; spinodal decomposition or nucleation followed by growth. In the first case, the liquid is unstable to composition waves, which form and grow, giving liquids of two different compositions. In the latter process discrete particles of the second liquid phase form via thermal fluctuations and then grow by diffusion. The two processes are very different, with the determining process being dictated by temperature, composition, and thermodynamic characteristics of the alloy. The first two quantities are process variables, while the third is determined by electronic interactions between the atoms in the alloy. In either case the initial alloy decomposition is followed by coarsening, resulting in growth of the particle size at nearly constant volume fraction. In particular, reduced gravity experiments on monotectic solutions have shown a number of interesting results in the KC-135. Monotectic solutions exhibit a miscibility gap in the liquid state, and consequently, gravity driven forces can dominate the solidification parameters at 1 g. In reduced gravity however, the distribution of the phases is different, resulting in new and interesting microstructures. The Rapid Melt/Rapid Quench Furnace allows one to melt a sample and resolidify it in one parabola of the KC-135's flight path, thus eliminating any accumulative influence of multiple parabolas to affect the microstructure of the material
