Apparatus for electrical measurements of thin films from 77 to 1000 K
A novel method of mounting thin samples for electrical measurements is described. A vacuum chuck holds a mounting plate, which, in turn, holds the sample. Contacts on the mounting plate establish electrical connection to the sample. The attachment of wires directly to the samples is unnecessary. Measurements can be made at temperatures from 77 to 1000 K. As an application of the apparatus, resistivity and Hall measurements of a thin silicon carbide sample are presented

Local Operations and Completely Positive Maps in Algebraic Quantum Field Theory
Einstein introduced the locality principle which states that all physical
effect in some finite space-time region does not influence its space-like
separated finite region. Recently, in algebraic quantum field theory, R\'{e}dei
captured the idea of the locality principle by the notion of operational
separability. The operation in operational separability is performed in some
finite space-time region, and leaves unchanged the state in its space-like
separated finite space-time region. This operation is defined with a completely
positive map. In the present paper, we justify using a completely positive map
as a local operation in algebraic quantum field theory, and show that this
local operation can be approximately written with Kraus operators under the
funnel property
Coronal emission lines as thermometers
Coronal emission line intensities are commonly used to measure electron
temperatures using emission measure and/or line ratio methods. In the presence
of systematic errors in atomic excitation calculations and data noise, the
information on underlying temperature distributions is fundamentally limited.
Increasing the number of emission lines used does not necessarily improve the

This Technical Memorandum (TM) lists the significant publications and presentations of the Science and Exploration Research Office during the period January 1-December 31, 2006. Entries in the main part of the document are categorized according to NASA Reports (arranged by report number), Open Literature and Presentations (arranged alphabetically by title). Most of the articles listed under Open Literature have appeared in refereed professional journals, books, monographs, or conference proceedings. Although many published abstracts are eventually expanded into full papers for publication in scientific and technical journals, they are often sufficiently comprehensive to include the significant results of the research reported. Therefore, published abstracts are listed separately in a subsection under Open Literature
Evaluation of microwave landing system approaches in a wide-body transport simulator
The objective of this study was to determine the suitability of flying complex curved approaches using the microwave landing system (MLS) with a wide-body transport aircraft. Fifty pilots in crews of two participated in the evaluation using a fixed-base simulator that emulated an MD-11 aircraft. Five approaches, consisting of one straight-in approach and four curved approaches, were flown by the pilots using a flight director. The test variables include the following: (1) manual and autothrottles; (2) wind direction; and (3) type of navigation display. The navigation display was either a map or a horizontal situation indicator (HSI). A complex wind that changed direction and speed with altitude, and included moderate turbulence, was used. Visibility conditions were Cat 1 or better. Subjective test data included pilot responses to questionnaires and pilot comments. Objective performance data included tracking accuracy, position error at decision height, and control activity. Results of the evaluation indicate that flying curved MLS approaches with a wide-body transport aircraft is operationally acceptable, depending upon the length of the final straight segment and the complexity of the approach
